    Get PDF
For a park site, it is very important and necessary to let the local planning authorities realize and understand the important aspects and benefits of the site and to establish the long-range development strategies for the location. In order to succeed during the planning process, the communication and information that flow among all the participants must be well organized. In this situation, a project-wide Geographic Information System (GIS) would be a good solution. The goal of this project is to explore the possibilities for administrative authorities to implement a GIS database system to support the site planning and management of a park site. The research is based on three parts: The first involves components related to the field of park planning and GIS technology. It provides an outline of the park planning and management process, GIS techniques, and GIS-based strategies that have been developed for use in park planning and design. The second part provides a method of developing a GIS database prototype for park planning and management. An inventory of existing assets and options for future development can be integrated in a GIS database. Then this provides a platform for the gradual development of a comprehensive park management system. The third part involves the development of a prototypical GIS database design for an existing park site. It represents a practical implementation of a GIS system for the Burden Center, an historical and agricultural research center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This system will give quality information about the Burden Center site and will serve as a foundation to facilitate park planning, decision-making, facility management, future development, and resource interpretation for educational purposes

Novel intelligent systems to assist energy transition and improve sustainability can be deployed at different scales, ranging from a house to an entire region. University campuses are an interesting intermediate size (big enough to matter and small enough to be tractable) for research, development, test and training on the integration of smartness at all levels, which has led to the emergence of the concept of “smart campus” over the last few years. This review article proposes an extensive analysis of the scientific literature on smart campuses from the last decade (2010-2020). The 182 selected publications are distributed into seven categories of smartness: smart building, smart environment, smart mobility, smart living, smart people, smart governance and smart data. The main open questions and challenges regarding smart campuses are presented at the end of the review and deal with sustainability and energy transition, acceptability and ethics, learning models, open data policies and interoperability. The present work was carried out within the framework of the Energy Network of the Regional Leaders Summit (RLS-Energy) as part of its multilateral research efforts on smart region

Adoption of Cloud Computing in the SMEs: An exploration of the issues and challenges for adoption of Cloud Computing by SMEs in Bangladesh in the context of “Digital Bangladesh”

    Get PDF
Cloud Computing is one of the most recent sophisticated technologies which can play a pivotal role in small and medium sized enterprises primarily because it may offer ICT resources to small businesses without large up-front costs nor expensive investment in specialist staff. This technology, however, is not presently used extensively in SMEs in Bangladesh owing to numerous causes and issues, which provide barriers to its adoption. The importance of SMEs in Bangladeshi economic and social development is crucial. The aim of this research is: • to investigate and to identify issues that explain the challenges of adoption of Cloud Computing by SMEs in Bangladesh; • to place these issues in an academic context by developing and proposing a conceptual framework for understanding drivers and barriers to Cloud Computing adoption and • to explore directions for Bangladeshi SMEs to adopt Cloud Computing within the framework of Bangladesh’s government policies for “Digital Bangladesh”. The “Digital Bangladesh” policy is a set of proposals for making the country digital by bringing the nation’s economy under the umbrella of ICT-related technologies. This policy does not simply mean the comprehensive use of computers in businesses but a modernisation of thinking about the use of advanced digital technologies in an effective way in business, education, and job creation by connecting citizens, businesses, government and ICT specialists. Targets for Digital Bangladesh is to achieve an increase in the country’s annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 10% by 2021 and to double the GDP contribution of SME sectors from 23% to 40%. Development of ICT use in Bangladeshi SMEs – in a variety of business sectors is, thus, fairly central to the Digital Bangladesh policy. This research has used primarily qualitative research methods, whereby data has been collected by conducting interviews with a sample of purposefully selected people from various SME sectors in different metropolitan centres in Bangladesh. In order to investigate and understand the nature of the issues confronting SMEs, this study sought to identify some potential solutions that may lead to Cloud Computing adoption within Bangladeshi SMEs within the Digital Bangladesh policy. Nine different types of SMEs were chosen to participate in this exploration. By using thematic analysis, the collected data are analysed and matched against the proposed framework for identifying drivers and barriers to Cloud Computing adoption. The observed issues were categorized into ‘internal’, ‘external’ and ‘technological’ contexts. This research contributes to the body of knowledge concerning Cloud Computing and its potential use in business contexts by providing a wide-ranging review of the literature that is directed upon identifying issues that challenging the Cloud Computing adoption. This research further developed two other frameworks addressing the drivers (incentives) and barriers to adoption of Cloud Computing especially in smaller businesses. In addition, an integrated but novel conceptual framework was developed to enable Bangladeshi SMEs and Bangladeshi ICT specialists to understand better the issues that may explain the challenges, thus far, of Cloud Computing adoption by SMEs. A realistic roadmap was developed to assist Bangladeshi SMEs to adopt Cloud Computing solutions in order to minimise the current gaps between theory and practice

The need to store, process and analyse data is a increasingly present reality in companies where business decisions depend heavily on digital platforms. The purpose of introducing the Data Warehouse concept was to facilitate and improve the process of collecting essential business indicators. The concept of Big Data came with the increase in the variety and the volume of data for analysis purposes. With the concept in mind, technologies were developed to face the imposed challenges. The digital transformation in the registration of entrances and exits in the public transport lead to large volumes of data that can be used to apply business analysis [1]. This project aims to collect a set of technologies in the field of Big Data and evaluate the storage capacity, the method of elaborating ETL methods and the performance in obtaining a response to a set of queries, referring to the entrances of the buses of public transport company Horários do Funchal. This project introduces a literature review on the concepts of Data Warehouse, dimensional models and Big Data, as well as existing technologies and work related to Big Data manipulation. The application of these technologies in public transport was also subject to a state-of-the-art analysis. The presented results reveal that some platforms are able to adapt well to an increase in the volume, with good performance capabilities, both in the execution of ETL processes and in the execution of queries, in comparison to other technologies, whose results are impractical in this type of study

Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

With digital technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), and Building Automation System (BAS), an increasing amount of data is being created. Data silos in Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry emerged. The isolation between BIM-based building contextual information, IoT devices’ time-series data, and BAS metadata still exist. This research aims to develop a framework to facilitate information exchange between BIM-based building contextual data, IoT devices’ time-series data, and BAS metadata using Semantic Web technology. This research: i) conducts a comprehensive literature review on BIM and IoT integration based on domains of application and integration methods to summarized an optimal current approach; ii) proposes a framework which enables information exchange among semantically described building contextual data, BAS metadata, and time-series data; iii) the proposed framework uses BOT and BRICK schema to describe building contextual data and BAS metadata; iv) creates an MVD for BIM assisted BAS design and information exchange using BACnet and IFC use case; v) validates the framework with the use case and data from Georgia Tech campus buildings.Ph.D
