In this work, a numerical tool is implemented for size optimization of spatial truss structures. To achieve this goal, the metaheuristic artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm based on the vivid behavior of honey bees is combined with the commercial software package SAP 2000 via its Application Programming Interface (API). Linking the optimization algorithm to SAP 2000 will allow access to the complete finite element library and potential of the commercial software. In order to do so, the numerical tool is developed within the Excel environment by using macros with the Visual Basic Programming Language. A complete picture is then presented to practitioners of the elaborated numerical tool, which can be used in daily design applications. The correct functionality is demonstrated by means of two challenging practical examples. Extension to other optimization applications can be easily adapted. In this paper a novel proposal of a modular hybrid algorithm as a tool for solving real-world engineering problems is presented. A memetic algorithm, MemMABC, is implemented with this approach and applied to solve two case studies of mechanism design, in order to evaluate its efficiency and performance. Because of its modularity, the proposed algorithm is simple and flexible; these features make it quite reusable to be applied on different optimization problems, with a wide scope. The solutions of the optimization problems are also modular, following a scheme of structured programming that includes the use of global variables for configuration, and subroutines for the objective function and the restrictions. Memetic algorithms are a good option to solve hard optimization problems, because of the synergy derived from the combination of their components: a global search population-based metaheuristic and a local refinement method. The quality of simulation results suggests that MemMABC can be successfully applied to solve hard problems in engineering design.Peer Reviewe

Recently, metaheuristics (MHs) have become increasingly popular in real-world engineering applications such as in the design of airframes structures and aeroelastic designs owing to its simple, flexible, and efficient nature. In this study, a novel hybrid algorithm is termed as Ensemble of Genetic algorithm, Grey wolf optimizer, Water cycle algorithm and Population base increment learningusing Weighted sum (E-GGWP-W), based on the successive archive methodology of the weighted population has been proposed to solve the aircraft composite wing design problem. Four distinguished algorithms viz. a Genetic algorithm (GA), a Grey wolf optimizer (GWO), a Water cycle algorithm (WCA), and Population base increment learning (PBIL) were used as ingredients of the proposed algorithm. The considered wing design problem is posed for overall weight minimization subject to several aeroelastic and structural constraints along with multiple discrete design variables to ascertain its viability for real-world applications. The algorithms are validated through the standard test functions of the CEC-RW-2020 test suite and composite Goland wing aeroelastic optimization. To check the performance, the proposed algorithm is contrasted with eight well established and newly developed MHs. Finally, a statistical analysis is done by performing Friedman’s rank test and allocating respective ranks to the algorithms. Based on the outcome, ithas been observed that the suggested algorithm outperforms the others

Optimisation problems are ubiquitous in particle and astrophysics, and involve locating the optimum of a complicated function of many parameters that may be computationally expensive to evaluate. We describe a number of global optimisation algorithms that are not yet widely used in particle astrophysics, benchmark them against random sampling and existing techniques, and perform a detailed comparison of their performance on a range of test functions. These include four analytic test functions of varying dimensionality, and a realistic example derived from a recent global fit of weak-scale supersymmetry. Although the best algorithm to use depends on the function being investigated, we are able to present general conclusions about the relative merits of random sampling, Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimisation, the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy, Bayesian Optimisation, Grey Wolf Optimisation, and the PyGMO Artificial Bee Colony, Gaussian Particle Filter and Adaptive Memory Programming for Global Optimisation algorithms

This study analyzes and designs the Swarm intelligence (SI) that Self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA) represents to solve industrial practice as well as academic optimization problems, and applies them to swarm robotics. Specifically, the characteristics of SOMA are clarified, shaping the basis for the analysis of SOMA's strengths and weaknesses for the release of SOMA T3A, SOMA Pareto, and iSOMA, with outstanding performance, confirmed by well-known test suites from IEEE CEC 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019. Besides, the dynamic path planning problem for swarm robotics is handled by the proposed algorithms considered as a prime instance. The computational and simulation results on Matlab have proven the performance of the novel algorithms as well as the correctness of the obstacle avoidance method for mobile robots and drones. Furthermore, two out of the three proposed versions achieved the tie for 3rd (the same ranking with HyDE-DF) and 5th place in the 100-Digit Challenge at CEC 2019, GECCO 2019, and SEMCCO 2019 competition, something that any other version of SOMA has yet to do. They show promising possibilities that SOMA and SI algorithms offer. Výsledky výpočtů a simulace v Matlabu prokázaly výkonnost nových algoritmů a správnost metody umožňující vyhýbání se překážkám u mobilních robotů a dronů.

A Tabu Search hyper-heuristic strategy for t-way test suite generation

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel hybrid t-way test generation strategy (where t indicates interaction strength), called High Level Hyper-Heuristic (HHH). HHH adopts Tabu Search as its high level meta-heuristic and leverages on the strength of four low level meta-heuristics, comprising of Teaching Learning based Optimization, Global Neighborhood Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Cuckoo Search Algorithm. HHH is able to capitalize on the strengths and limit the deficiencies of each individual algorithm in a collective and synergistic manner. Unlike existing hyper-heuristics, HHH relies on three defined operators, based on improvement, intensification and diversification, to adaptively select the most suitable meta-heuristic at any particular time. Our results are promising as HHH manages to outperform existing t-way strategies on many of the benchmarks

Based on the experimental results, an analysis was made to identify the performance of various electrodes during fabrication of micro holes considering Inconel 718 as well as titanium as workpiece materials. It was found that that platinum followed by graphite and copper as electrode material exhibited higher MRR for both the workpiece materials but on the other hand platinum showed higher values of OC, RCL and TA respectively when compared to graphite and copper. The variation of temperature distribution in radial and depth direction with different process parameters has been determined for Inconel 718 and Titanium 5. Theoretical cavity volume was calculated for different process parameter settings for both workpiece materials and it was found that Titanium 5 exhibited higher cavity volume then Inconel 718. This research work offers new insights into the performance of micro-µ-EDM of Inconel 718 and Titanium5 using different electrodes. The optimum process parameters have been identified to determine multi-objective machinability criteria such as MRR, angle of taper of micro-hole, the thickness of recast-layer and overcut for fabrication of micro-holes

The electrical power system is undergoing a revolution enabled by advances in telecommunications, computer hardware and software, measurement, metering systems, IoT, and power electronics. Furthermore, the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, energy storage devices, and electric vehicles and the drive for energy efficiency have pushed power systems to modernise and adopt new technologies. The resulting smart grid is characterised, in part, by a bi-directional flow of energy and information. The evolution of the power grid, as well as its interconnection with energy storage systems and renewable energy sources, has created new opportunities for optimising not only their techno-economic aspects at the planning stages but also their control and operation. However, new challenges emerge in the optimization of these systems due to their complexity and nonlinear dynamic behaviour as well as the uncertainties involved. This volume is a selection of 20 papers carefully made by the editors from the MDPI topic “Optimisation, Optimal Control and Nonlinear Dynamics in Electrical Power, Energy Storage and Renewable Energy Systems”, which was closed in April 2022. The selected papers address the above challenges and exemplify the significant benefits that optimisation and nonlinear control techniques can bring to modern power and energy systems
