    Computing Bounds on Network Capacity Regions as a Polytope Reconstruction Problem

    We define a notion of network capacity region of networks that generalizes the notion of network capacity defined by Cannons et al. and prove its notable properties such as closedness, boundedness and convexity when the finite field is fixed. We show that the network routing capacity region is a computable rational polytope and provide exact algorithms and approximation heuristics for computing the region. We define the semi-network linear coding capacity region, with respect to a fixed finite field, that inner bounds the corresponding network linear coding capacity region, show that it is a computable rational polytope, and provide exact algorithms and approximation heuristics. We show connections between computing these regions and a polytope reconstruction problem and some combinatorial optimization problems, such as the minimum cost directed Steiner tree problem.     On Network Coding Capacity - Matroidal Networks and Network Capacity Regions

    One fundamental problem in the field of network coding is to determine the network coding capacity of networks under various network coding schemes. In this thesis, we address the problem with two approaches: matroidal networks and capacity regions. In our matroidal approach, we prove the converse of the theorem which states that, if a network is scalar-linearly solvable then it is a matroidal network associated with a representable matroid over a finite field. As a consequence, we obtain a correspondence between scalar-linearly solvable networks and representable matroids over finite fields in the framework of matroidal networks. We prove a theorem about the scalar-linear solvability of networks and field characteristics. We provide a method for generating scalar-linearly solvable networks that are potentially different from the networks that we already know are scalar-linearly solvable. In our capacity region approach, we define a multi-dimensional object, called the network capacity region, associated with networks that is analogous to the rate regions in information theory. For the network routing capacity region, we show that the region is a computable rational polytope and provide exact algorithms and approximation heuristics for computing the region. For the network linear coding capacity region, we construct a computable rational polytope, with respect to a given finite field, that inner bounds the linear coding capacity region and provide exact algorithms and approximation heuristics for computing the polytope.     The present article is an exposition of a theory of discrete convex functions on certain graph structures, developed by the author in recent years. This theory is a spin-off of discrete convex analysis by Murota, and is motivated by combinatorial dualities in multiflow problems and the complexity classification of facility location problems on graphs.     Approximating Directed Steiner Problems via Tree Embedding

    In the k-edge connected directed Steiner tree (k-DST) problem, we are given a directed graph G on n vertices with edge-costs, a root vertex r, a set of h terminals T and an integer k. The goal is to find a min-cost subgraph H of G that connects r to each terminal t by k edge-disjoint r,t-paths. This problem includes as special cases the well-known directed Steiner tree (DST) problem (the case k = 1) and the group Steiner tree (GST) problem. Despite having been studied and mentioned many times in literature, e.g., by Feldman et al. [SODA'09, JCSS'12], by Cheriyan et al. [SODA'12, TALG'14] and by Laekhanukit [SODA'14], there was no known non-trivial approximation algorithm for k-DST for k >= 2 even in the special case that an input graph is directed acyclic and has a constant number of layers. If an input graph is not acyclic, the complexity status of k-DST is not known even for a very strict special case that k= 2 and |T| = 2. In this paper, we make a progress toward developing a non-trivial approximation algorithm for k-DST. We present an O(D k^{D-1} log n)-approximation algorithm for k-DST on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) with D layers, which can be extended to a special case of k-DST on "general graphs" when an instance has a D-shallow optimal solution, i.e., there exist k edge-disjoint r,t-paths, each of length at most D, for every terminal t. For the case k= 1 (DST), our algorithm yields an approximation ratio of O(D log h), thus implying an O(log^3 h)-approximation algorithm for DST that runs in quasi-polynomial-time (due to the height-reduction of Zelikovsky [Algorithmica'97]). Consequently, as our algorithm works for general graphs, we obtain an O(D k^{D-1} log n)-approximation algorithm for a D-shallow instance of the k-edge-connected directed Steiner subgraph problem, where we wish to connect every pair of terminals by k-edge-disjoint paths

    Approximating the generalized terminal backup problem via half-integral multiflow relaxation

    We consider a network design problem called the generalized terminal backup problem. Whereas earlier work investigated the edge-connectivity constraints only, we consider both edge- and node-connectivity constraints for this problem. A major contribution of this paper is the development of a strongly polynomial-time 4/3-approximation algorithm for the problem. Specifically, we show that a linear programming relaxation of the problem is half-integral, and that the half-integral optimal solution can be rounded to a 4/3-approximate solution. We also prove that the linear programming relaxation of the problem with the edge-connectivity constraints is equivalent to minimizing the cost of half-integral multiflows that satisfy flow demands given from terminals. This observation presents a strongly polynomial-time algorithm for computing a minimum cost half-integral multiflow under flow demand constraints

    Digital waveguide modeling for wind instruments: building a state-space representation based on the Webster-Lokshin model

    This paper deals with digital waveguide modeling of wind instruments. It presents the application of state-space representations for the refined acoustic model of Webster-Lokshin. This acoustic model describes the propagation of longitudinal waves in axisymmetric acoustic pipes with a varying cross-section, visco-thermal losses at the walls, and without assuming planar or spherical waves. Moreover, three types of discontinuities of the shape can be taken into account (radius, slope and curvature). The purpose of this work is to build low-cost digital simulations in the time domain based on the Webster-Lokshin model. First, decomposing a resonator into independent elementary parts and isolating delay operators lead to a Kelly-Lochbaum network of input/output systems and delays. Second, for a systematic assembling of elements, their state-space representations are derived in discrete time. Then, standard tools of automatic control are used to reduce the complexity of digital simulations in the time domain. The method is applied to a real trombone, and results of simulations are presented and compared with measurements. This method seems to be a promising approach in term of modularity, complexity of calculation and accuracy, for any acoustic resonators based on tubes
