    3-D Hybrid Localization with RSS/AoA in Wireless Sensor Networks: Centralized Approach

    This dissertation addresses one of the most important issues present in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which is the sensor’s localization problem in non-cooperative and cooperative 3-D WSNs, for both cases of known and unknown source transmit power PT . The localization of sensor nodes in a network is essential data. There exists a large number of applications for WSNs and the fact that sensors are robust, low cost and do not require maintenance, makes these types of networks an optimal asset to study or manage harsh and remote environments. The main objective of these networks is to collect different types of data such as temperature, humidity, or any other data type, depending on the intended application. The knowledge of the sensors’ locations is a key feature for many applications; knowing where the data originates from, allows to take particular type of actions that are suitable for each case. To face this localization problem a hybrid system fusing distance and angle measurements is employed. The measurements are assumed to be collected through received signal strength indicator and from antennas, extracting the received signal strength (RSS) and angle of arrival (AoA) information. For non-cooperativeWSN, it resorts to these measurements models and, following the least squares (LS) criteria, a non-convex estimator is developed. Next, it is shown that by following the square range (SR) approach, the estimator can be transformed into a general trust region subproblem (GTRS) framework. For cooperative WSN it resorts also to the measurement models mentioned above and it is shown that the estimator can be converted into a convex problem using semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation techniques.It is also shown that the proposed estimators have a straightforward generalization from the known PT case to the unknown PT case. This generalization is done by making use of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator to compute the value of the PT . The results obtained from simulations demonstrate a good estimation accuracy, thus validating the exceptional performance of the considered approaches for this hybrid localization system

    A survey on gas leakage source detection and boundary tracking with wireless sensor networks

    Gas leakage source detection and boundary tracking of continuous objects have received a significant research attention in the academic as well as the industries due to the loss and damage caused by toxic gas leakage in large-scale petrochemical plants. With the advance and rapid adoption of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the last decades, source localization and boundary estimation have became the priority of research works. In addition, an accurate boundary estimation is a critical issue due to the fast movement, changing shape, and invisibility of the gas leakage compared with the other single object detections. We present various gas diffusion models used in the literature that offer the effective computational approaches to measure the gas concentrations in the large area. In this paper, we compare the continuous object localization and boundary detection schemes with respect to complexity, energy consumption, and estimation accuracy. Moreover, this paper presents the research directions for existing and future gas leakage source localization and boundary estimation schemes with WSNs

    Multi-mode Tracking of a Group of Mobile Agents

    We consider the problem of tracking a group of mobile nodes with limited available computational and energy resources given noisy RSSI measurements and position estimates from group members. The multilateration solutions are known for energy efficiency. However, these solutions are not directly applicable to dynamic grouping scenarios where neighbourhoods and resource availability may frequently change. Existing algorithms such as cluster-based GPS duty-cycling, individual-based tracking, and multilateration-based tracking can only partially deal with the challenges of dynamic grouping scenarios. To cope with these challenges in an effective manner, we propose a new group-based multi-mode tracking algorithm. The proposed algorithm takes the topological structure of the group as well as the availability of the resources into consideration and decides the best solution at any particular time instance. We consider a clustering approach where a cluster head coordinates the usage of resources among the cluster members. We evaluate the energy-accuracy trade-off of the proposed algorithm for various fixed sampling intervals. The evaluation is based on the 2D position tracks of 40 nodes generated using Reynolds' flocking model. For a given energy budget, the proposed algorithm reduces the mean tracking error by up to 20%20\% in comparison to the existing energy-efficient cooperative algorithms.
