An Axiomatic Analysis of Diversity Evaluation Metrics: Introducing the Rank-Biased Utility Metric
Many evaluation metrics have been defined to evaluate the effectiveness
ad-hoc retrieval and search result diversification systems. However, it is
often unclear which evaluation metric should be used to analyze the performance
of retrieval systems given a specific task. Axiomatic analysis is an
informative mechanism to understand the fundamentals of metrics and their
suitability for particular scenarios. In this paper, we define a
constraint-based axiomatic framework to study the suitability of existing
metrics in search result diversification scenarios. The analysis informed the
definition of Rank-Biased Utility (RBU) -- an adaptation of the well-known
Rank-Biased Precision metric -- that takes into account redundancy and the user
effort associated to the inspection of documents in the ranking. Our
experiments over standard diversity evaluation campaigns show that the proposed
metric captures quality criteria reflected by different metrics, being suitable
in the absence of knowledge about particular features of the scenario under

PRES: A score metric for evaluating recall-oriented information retrieval applications
Information retrieval (IR) evaluation scores are generally
designed to measure the effectiveness with which relevant
documents are identified and retrieved. Many scores have been proposed for this purpose over the years. These have primarily focused on aspects of precision and recall, and while these are often discussed with equal importance, in practice most attention has been given to precision focused metrics. Even for recalloriented IR tasks of growing importance, such as patent retrieval, these precision based scores remain the primary evaluation measures. Our study examines different evaluation measures for a recall-oriented patent retrieval task and demonstrates the limitations of the current scores in comparing different IR systems for this task. We introduce PRES, a novel evaluation metric for this type of application taking account of recall and the userâs search effort. The behaviour of PRES is demonstrated on 48 runs from the CLEF-IP 2009 patent retrieval track. A full analysis of the performance of PRES shows its suitability for measuring the

Using Search Engine Technology to Improve Library Catalogs
This chapter outlines how search engine technology can be used in online public access library
catalogs (OPACs) to help improve usersâ experiences, to identify usersâ intentions, and to indicate
how it can be applied in the library context, along with how sophisticated ranking criteria can be
applied to the online library catalog. A review of the literature and current OPAC developments
form the basis of recommendations on how to improve OPACs. Findings were that the major
shortcomings of current OPACs are that they are not sufficiently user-centered and that their results
presentations lack sophistication. Further, these shortcomings are not addressed in current 2.0
developments. It is argued that OPAC development should be made search-centered before
additional features are applied. While the recommendations on ranking functionality and the use of
user intentions are only conceptual and not yet applied to a library catalogue, practitioners will find
recommendations for developing better OPACs in this chapter. In short, readers will find a
systematic view on how the search enginesâ strengths can be applied to improving librariesâ online
catalogs
Adaptive content mapping for internet navigation
The Internet as the biggest human library ever assembled keeps on growing. Although all kinds of information carriers (e.g. audio/video/hybrid file formats) are available, text based documents dominate. It is estimated that about 80% of all information worldwide stored electronically exists in (or can be converted into) text form. More and more, all kinds of documents are generated by means of a text processing system and are therefore available electronically. Nowadays, many printed journals are also published online and may even discontinue to appear in print form tomorrow. This development has many convincing advantages: the documents are both available faster (cf. prepress services) and cheaper, they can be searched more easily, the physical storage only needs a fraction of the space previously necessary and the medium will not age. For most people, fast and easy access is the most interesting feature of the new age; computer-aided search for specific documents or Web pages becomes the basic tool for information-oriented work. But this tool has problems. The current keyword based search machines available on the Internet are not really appropriate for such a task; either there are (way) too many documents matching the specified keywords are presented or none at all. The problem lies in the fact that it is often very difficult to choose appropriate terms describing the desired topic in the first place. This contribution discusses the current state-of-the-art techniques in content-based searching (along with common visualization/browsing approaches) and proposes a particular adaptive solution for intuitive Internet document navigation, which not only enables the user to provide full texts instead of manually selected keywords (if available), but also allows him/her to explore the whole database
New perspectives on Web search engine research
PurposeâThe purpose of this chapter is to give an overview of the context of Web search and search engine-related research, as well as to introduce the reader to the sections and chapters of the book. Methodology/approachâWe review literature dealing with various aspects of search engines, with special emphasis on emerging areas of Web searching, search engine evaluation going beyond traditional methods, and new perspectives on Webs earching. FindingsâThe approaches to studying Web search engines are manifold. Given the importance of Web search engines for knowledge acquisition, research from different perspectives needs to be integrated into a more cohesive perspective. Researchlimitations/implicationsâThe chapter suggests a basis for research in the field and also introduces further research directions. Originality/valueofpaperâThe chapter gives a concise overview of the topics dealt with in the book and also shows directions for researchers interested in Web search engines
