    Farm 2.0 Using Wordpress to Manage Geocontent and Promote Regional Food Products

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.Recent innovations in geospatial technology have dramatically increased the utility and ubiquity of cartographic interfaces and spatially-referenced content on the web. Capitalizing on these developments, the Farm2.0 system demonstrates an approach to manage user-generated geocontent pertaining to European protected designation of origin (PDO) food products.Wordpress, a popular open-source publishing platform, supplies the framework for a geographic content management system, or GeoCMS, to promote PDO products in the Spanish province of Valencia. The Wordpress platform is modified through a suite of plug-ins and customizations to create an extensible application that could be easily deployed in other regions and administrated cooperatively by distributed regulatory councils. Content, either regional recipes or map locations for vendors and farms, is available for syndication as a GeoRSS feed and aggregated with outside feeds in a dynamic web map

    Urban Emotions and Realtime Planning Methods

    The Urban Emotions approach combines methods and technologies from Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), Social Media, sensors and bio-statistical sensors to detect people’s perception for a new perspective about urban environment. In short, it is a methodology for gaining and extracting contextual information of emotion by using technologies from real-time human sensing systems and crowdsourcing methods. “Real-time planning” describes a system in which planning disciplines get a toolset for a fast and simple creation of visualization or simulation from municipal geodata in a consistent workflow. This includes applications from Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality as well as the above mentioned combination of real-time humane sensors and urban sensing systems. Due to the fact, that a real existing city never corresponds with a laboratory situation, Virtual Reality can be one of the solutions to fill the gap for detecting people’s perceptions concerning design, while filtering other unintended side effects. Insights and results from Urban Emotions project, granted by German Research Foundation and Austrian Science Fond, will be presented in this contribution.     Augmented Realities and Uneven Geographies: Exploring the Geolinguistic Contours of the Web

    This paper analyzes the digital dimensions of places as represented by online, geocoded references to the economic, social, and political experiences of the city. These digital layers are invisible to the naked eye, but form a central component of the augmentations and mediations of place enabled by hundreds of millions of mobile computing devices and other digital technologies. The analysis highlights how these augmentations of place differ across space and language and highlights both the differences and some of the causal factors behind them. This is performed through a global study of all online content indexed within Google Maps, and more specific analyses of the linguistically and topically segregated layers of information over four selected places. The uneven linguistic geographies that this study reveals undoubtedly influence the many ways in which place is enacted and brought into being. The larger aim of this project is to use these initial mappings of the linguistic contours of the geoweb to push forward a broader debate about how augmented inclusions and exclusions, visibilities and invisibilities will shape the way that places become defined, imagined, and experienced

    Museos virtuales y entorno construido: narrativas y experiencias inmersivas vía centros de geodatos multitemporales

    [EN] Our built environment is nowadays considered as a dynamic complex, stretching and transforming across space and time, with the interaction of human, social and economic dimensions. It needs to be safeguarded as living places for the future taking into account such complexity. The general aim of this work is to contribute to the comprehension of landscape values, enhancing participation processes by tourists and local communities, considering the built environment as a system: the sum of natural transformation, ancient artefacts stratification and human activities, partially covering the tangible traces, and functioning as a vehicle for the comprehension of intangible values. Multi-temporal, multi-scale and geospatial datasets can play an important role in such knowledge transfer processes by means of narratives and immersive experiences in a multimedia museum approach. In particular, the cartographic heritage, in the form of metric and non-metric maps, can be progressively used as a source of information for innovative narratives. Virtual Museums (VMs)are additional "channels" to disseminate content and to provide knowledge about cultural heritage; they have emerged from the crossbreeding process between museums and digital technologies. Investigating how digital storytelling may support communication and understanding of complex systems, such as the built environment and landscape, it is relevant because cultural awareness may foster the sense of belonging and identity construction of which Europe is thirsty, contributing to the safeguarding of fragile sites. The paper provides useful information for museums that would like to follow this pathway. It retraces the main steps of storytelling production and presents interesting examples of immersive narrative models based on geospatial data and a virtual hub, helping people to retrieve and access information and to recognize places of memory mostly unknown. Moreover, it offers an evaluation of existing tools that can be adopted for this purpose. Eventually, by virtue of the research carried out for the case study of the Virtual Museum of Como Lake Landscape, the paper aims at ascertaining which kind of stories and experiences can be designed, the potential of these tools and possible weaknesses or constraints that deserve future researches.[ES] El entorno construido se considera hoy en día como un complejo dinámico, que se extiende y transforma a través del espacio y el tiempo, con interacción de dimensiones humanas, sociales y económicas. Debe salvaguardarse como lugares donde vivir el futuro teniendo en cuenta tal complejidad. El objetivo general de este trabajo es contribuir a la comprensión de los valores paisajísticos, potenciando los procesos de participación de los turistas y de los autóctonos, considerando el entorno construido como un sistema: suma de la transformación natural, de la estratificación de artefactos antiguos y de actividades humanas, cubriendo parcialmente los rastros tangibles, y vehículo de comprensión de valores intangibles. Los conjuntos de datos multitemporales, a multi-escala y geoespaciales pueden desempeñar un papel importante en dicho proceso de transferencia de conocimiento a través de narrativas y experiencias inmersivas en el enfoque de un museo multimedia. En particular, el patrimonio cartográfico, en forma de mapas métricos y mapas no métricos, puede utilizarse progresivamente como fuente de información para narrativas innovadoras. Los Museos Virtuales (VM) son “canales” adicionales que permiten difundir contenido y proporcionar conocimiento sobre el patrimonio cultural; surgen del proceso de mestizaje entre museos y tecnologías digitales. Investigar cómo la narración digital puede apoyar la comunicación y la comprensión de sistemas complejos, como el entorno construido y el paisaje, es relevante porque la conciencia cultural puede fomentar el sentido de pertenencia y la construcción de identidad de los que Europa tiene sed, contribuyendo a la protección de sitios frágiles. El artículo proporciona información útil para los museos que deseen seguir este camino. Describe los principales pasos que deberían considerarse a la hora de producir narrativas y pone ejemplos interesantes de modelos narrativos inmersivos basados en datos geoespaciales y centros virtuales, que ayudan a las personas a recuperar y acceder a información, y a reconocer lugares desconocidos o vagamente retenidos en la memoria. Además, ofrece una evaluación de las herramientas existentes que se pueden adoptar con este propósito.     Surfaces from the visual past : recovering high-resolution terrain data from historic aerial imagery for multitemporal landscape analysis

    Historic aerial images are invaluable sources of aid to archaeological research. Often collected with large-format photogrammetric quality cameras, these images are potential archives of multidimensional data that can be used to recover information about historic landscapes that have been lost to modern development. However, a lack of camera information for many historic images coupled with physical degradation of their media has often made it difficult to compute geometrically rigorous 3D content from such imagery. While advances in photogrammetry and computer vision over the last two decades have made possible the extraction of accurate and detailed 3D topographical data from high-quality digital images emanating from uncalibrated or unknown cameras, the target source material for these algorithms is normally digital content and thus not negatively affected by the passage of time. In this paper, we present refinements to a computer vision-based workflow for the extraction of 3D data from historic aerial imagery, using readily available software, specific image preprocessing techniques and in-field measurement observations to mitigate some shortcomings of archival imagery and improve extraction of historical digital elevation models (hDEMs) for use in landscape archaeological research. We apply the developed method to a series of historic image sets and modern topographic data covering a period of over 70 years in western Sicily (Italy) and evaluate the outcome. The resulting series of hDEMs form a temporal data stack which is compared with modern high-resolution terrain data using a geomorphic change detection approach, providing a quantification of landscape change through time in extent and depth, and the impact of this change on archaeological resources

    SmartRegio – Employing Spatial Data to Provide Decision Support for SMEs and City Administrations

    When decisions have to be made which are based on the characteristics and expected developments in specific spatial environments (such as finding the best place for a new production site or for a new shop), geo data and the information that can be derived from it plays a crucial role. While larger companies typically can afford the setup of the required organisational units as well as the access to relevant data from commercial providers, smaller organisations such as SMEs or city administrations are at a disadvantage. The aim of the SmartRegio project was to develop solutions for such organisations that combine freely available (mass) spatial data from many different sources as a decision-making basis focusing on governmental and private actors operating with a focus on a specific region. The data sources include data from infrastructures like energy and mobility, data from public entities, and also data from social media and media channels. The SmartRegio project successfully identified and tackled major technical and legal challenges when aiming to exploit such data, while at the same time realising a generic infrastructure that supports the required processes within the given context

    Developing Public Rental Housing on Rural Collective Construction Land in Shanghai Suburbs: A Case of Cao’an Village in Jiading Industrial District

    Since the 1990s, it is an obvious feature of Shanghai suburbs that the spatial urbanization lags behind the industrialization, with thriving demands for housing from domestic immigrant workers. By contrast, thevillages surrounding the industrial area undergo an aging process continuously, with the youth moving out of the village and many rural houses left vacant, expecting new developing opportunities and vitality urgently. If the demands from both sides can not be coordinated or guided, the indigenous villagers would likelyconstruct or enlarge the owner-occupied houses illegally arbitrarily and rent them to the immigrants, resulting in the deterioration of the living environment and social conflicts in the village. In 2017, the national policy "Pilot Scheme for Building Rental Houses on the Collective construction land" was released, in which Shanghai was selected as a pilot city. In this background, this paper aims to examine the necessity and feasibility of building public rental houses (abbr. PRH) on the rural collective construction land1 (abbr. CCL) in Shanghai suburbs and propose appropriate strategies for it. The paper first summarizesrelevant experience from villages in Dongguan and Beijing via documentation. Then combined with the author's practice of Master-planning in Jiading Industrial Zone in Shanghai, with a local village named Cao'an as the case, this paper evaluates the necessity and feasibility of constructing public rental houses in Cao'an village respectively from the village's status quo of development and the opportunities offered by its special location. Finally, drawing on the experience of Dongguan and Beijing, corresponding strategiesregarding the construction of housing-supply-system and subsequent development are proposed. This paper aims to discuss whether it's possible to, and how to use rural land reasonably to resolve the supply-demand contradiction of housing in the context of rapid industrialization of suburbs in developing countries, guide the orderly construction of suburbs, and prevent villages from becoming informal settlements

    Thematic landscape master plan : climate-resilient, permeable, and culturally informed landscape master plan for Hostivice municipality, Czechia

    The Master thesis investigates urban as well as open landscape in the Hostivice Municipality, Prague-West District, Czechia. The introduction presents the current state of landscape planning in the Hostivice Municipality, and unveils the concept of landscape within geography and its position in Czech Republic. A selected lens of three themes – Climate Resilience, Transport, and Heritage – is presented as a red thread for processing the whole thesis. Under the respective themes, background information is presented consisting mostly of regional environment publications, historical books, and scientific papers. The method is established according to the concept of landscape as a body of layers in an analysis combining both theoretical sources (contained in the background information), image (historical maps, comprehensive maps sports analytics), and embodiedness (cartographic activity, meetings with municipal representatives). The analysis concludes statements about the Hostivice Landscape respective to each theme. To the Climate Resilience theme, they assert how the landscape is used only for production purposes, split significantly between rural and urban landscape, how the landscape lacks multi-functionality for its users/inhabitants, and how the ecological services are conducted. The Transport theme concludes a low permeability for both pedestrians and cyclists in both urban and rural landscape. The Heritage theme deduces a low appreciation for the agricultural landscape of Hostivice, pinpoints a low care for significant heritage sites including the Hostivice Ponds. As a result, the conclusions are interpreted in articulating an informed set of measures in the Thematic Landscape Master Plan, which is assigned in the three colours for the three themes. The stress is put on connectivity and multi-functionality of the public spaces for the people in Hostivice. The discussion reflects upon the data sources as well as stimulating topics that were generated by the process. It raises arguments for the three selected themes and compares them with Schein’s discourse materialized. The discussion argues for a transformability of the landscape and an essential urge to accustom the role of landscape to our contemporary needs. The Czech landscape legislation is suspected for propelling the urban/rural divide witnessed in the case of the Territorial System of Ecological Stability
