Information system support in construction industry with semantic web technologies and/or autonomous reasoning agents
Information technology support is hard to find for the early design phases of the architectural design process. Many of the existing issues in such design decision support tools appear to be caused by a mismatch between the ways in which designers think and the ways in which information systems aim to give support. We therefore started an investigation of existing theories of design thinking, compared to the way in which design decision support systems provide information to the designer. We identify two main strategies towards information system support in the early design phase: (1) applications for making design try-outs, and (2) applications as autonomous reasoning agents. We outline preview implementations for both approaches and indicate to what extent these strategies can be used to improve information system support for the architectural designer
iTETRIS: An Integrated Wireless and Traffic Platform for Real-Time Road Traffic Management Solutions
Wireless vehicular cooperative systems have been identified as an attractive solution to improve road traffic management, thereby contributing to the European goal of safer, cleaner, and more efficient and sustainable traffic solutions. V2V-V2I communication technologies can improve traffic management through real-time exchange of data among vehicles and with road infrastructure. It is also of great importance to investigate the adequate combination of V2V and V2I technologies to ensure the continuous and costefficient operation of traffic management solutions based on wireless vehicular cooperative solutions. However, to adequately design and optimize these communication protocols and analyze the potential of wireless vehicular cooperative systems to improve road traffic management, adequate testbeds and field operational tests need to be conducted.
Despite the potential of Field Operational Tests to get the first insights into the benefits and problems faced in the development of wireless vehicular cooperative systems, there is yet the need to evaluate in the long term and large dimension the true potential benefits of wireless vehicular cooperative systems to improve traffic efficiency. To this aim, iTETRIS is devoted to the development of advanced tools coupling traffic and wireless communication simulators
Modeling the Internet of Things: a simulation perspective
This paper deals with the problem of properly simulating the Internet of
Things (IoT). Simulating an IoT allows evaluating strategies that can be
employed to deploy smart services over different kinds of territories. However,
the heterogeneity of scenarios seriously complicates this task. This imposes
the use of sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques. We discuss novel
approaches for the provision of scalable simulation scenarios, that enable the
real-time execution of massively populated IoT environments. Attention is given
to novel hybrid and multi-level simulation techniques that, when combined with
agent-based, adaptive Parallel and Distributed Simulation (PADS) approaches,
can provide means to perform highly detailed simulations on demand. To support
this claim, we detail a use case concerned with the simulation of vehicular
transportation systems.Comment: Proceedings of the IEEE 2017 International Conference on High

A communication channel model of the software process
Beginning research into a noisy communication channel analogy of software development process productivity, in order to establish quantifiable behavior and theoretical bounds is discussed. The analogy leads to a fundamental mathematical relationship between human productivity and the amount of information supplied by the developers, the capacity of the human channel for processing and transmitting information, the software product yield (object size) the work effort, requirements efficiency, tool and process efficiency, and programming environment advantage. An upper bound to productivity is derived that shows that software reuse is the only means that can lead to unbounded productivity growth; practical considerations of size and cost of reusable components may reduce this to a finite bound
Building an Emulation Environment for Cyber Security Analyses of Complex Networked Systems
Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly
increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the
number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly
growing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions
requires the availability of separate, test environments that best emulate the
complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and
monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, thus enabling the study
of cyber defense strategies under real and controllable traffic and attack
scenarios. In this paper, we propose a methodology that makes use of a
combination of techniques of network and security assessment, and the use of
cloud technologies to build an emulation environment with adjustable degree of
affinity with respect to actual reference networks or planned systems. As a
byproduct, starting from a specific study case, we collected a dataset
consisting of complete network traces comprising benign and malicious traffic,
which is feature-rich and publicly available
Single-Board-Computer Clusters for Cloudlet Computing in Internet of Things
The number of connected sensors and devices is expected to increase to billions in the near
future. However, centralised cloud-computing data centres present various challenges to meet the
requirements inherent to Internet of Things (IoT) workloads, such as low latency, high throughput
and bandwidth constraints. Edge computing is becoming the standard computing paradigm for
latency-sensitive real-time IoT workloads, since it addresses the aforementioned limitations related
to centralised cloud-computing models. Such a paradigm relies on bringing computation close to
the source of data, which presents serious operational challenges for large-scale cloud-computing
providers. In this work, we present an architecture composed of low-cost Single-Board-Computer
clusters near to data sources, and centralised cloud-computing data centres. The proposed
cost-efficient model may be employed as an alternative to fog computing to meet real-time IoT
workload requirements while keeping scalability. We include an extensive empirical analysis to
assess the suitability of single-board-computer clusters as cost-effective edge-computing micro data
centres. Additionally, we compare the proposed architecture with traditional cloudlet and cloud
architectures, and evaluate them through extensive simulation. We finally show that acquisition costs
can be drastically reduced while keeping performance levels in data-intensive IoT use cases.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2017-82113-C2-1-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad RTI2018-098062-A-I00European Union’s Horizon 2020 No. 754489Science Foundation Ireland grant 13/RC/209
A practical approach to network-based processing
The usage of general-purpose processors externally attached to routers to play virtually the role of active coprocessors seems a safe and cost-effective approach to add active network capabilities to existing routers. This paper reviews this router-assistant way of making active nodes, addresses the benefits and limitations of this technique, and describes a new platform based on it using an enhanced commercial router. The features new to this type of architecture are transparency, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and full control over layer 3 and above. A practical experience with two applications for path characterization and a transport gateway managing multi-QoS is described. Most of this work has been funded by the IST project GCAP (Global Communication Architecture and Protocols for new QoS services over IPv6 networks) IST-1999-10 504. Further development and application to practical scenarios is being supported by IST project Opium (Open Platform for Integration of UMTS Middleware) IST-2001-36063 and the Spanish MCYT under projects TEL99-0988-C02-01 and AURAS TIC2001-1650-C02-01.Publicad
