    Surveying human habit modeling and mining techniques in smart spaces

    A smart space is an environment, mainly equipped with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, able to provide services to humans, helping them to perform daily tasks by monitoring the space and autonomously executing actions, giving suggestions and sending alarms. Approaches suggested in the literature may differ in terms of required facilities, possible applications, amount of human intervention required, ability to support multiple users at the same time adapting to changing needs. In this paper, we propose a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that classifies most influential approaches in the area of smart spaces according to a set of dimensions identified by answering a set of research questions. These dimensions allow to choose a specific method or approach according to available sensors, amount of labeled data, need for visual analysis, requirements in terms of enactment and decision-making on the environment. Additionally, the paper identifies a set of challenges to be addressed by future research in the field

    A Review of Data-driven Robotic Process Automation Exploiting Process Mining

    Purpose: Process mining aims to construct, from event logs, process maps that can help discover, automate, improve, and monitor organizational processes. Robotic process automation (RPA) uses software robots to perform some tasks usually executed by humans. It is usually difficult to determine what processes and steps to automate, especially with RPA. Process mining is seen as one way to address such difficulty. This paper aims to assess the applicability of process mining algorithms in accelerating and improving the implementation of RPA, along with the challenges encountered throughout project lifecycles. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted to examine the approaches where process mining techniques were used to understand the as-is processes that can be automated with software robots. Eight databases were used to identify papers on this topic. Findings: A total of 19 papers, all published since 2018, were selected from 158 unique candidate papers and then analyzed. There is an increase in the number of publications in this domain. Originality: The literature currently lacks a systematic review that covers the intersection of process mining and robotic process automation. The literature mainly focuses on the methods to record the events that occur at the level of user interactions with the application, and on the preprocessing methods that are needed to discover routines with the steps that can be automated. Several challenges are faced with preprocessing such event logs, and many lifecycle steps of automation project are weakly supported by existing approaches.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures, 5 table

    Discovering Exclusive Patterns in Frequent Sequences

    This paper presents a new concept for pattern discovery in frequent sequences with potentially interesting applications. Based on data mining, the approach aims to discover exclusive sequential patterns (ESP) by checking the relative exclusion of patterns across data sequences. ESP mining pursues the post-processing of sequential patterns and augments existing work on structural relations patterns mining. A three phase ESP mining method is proposed together with component algorithms, where a running worked example explains the process. Experiments are performed on real-world and synthetic datasets which showcase the results of ESP mining and demonstrate its effectiveness, illuminating the theories developed. An outline case study in workflow modelling gives some insight into future applicability

    Process Mining Concepts for Discovering User Behavioral Patterns in Instrumented Software

    Process Mining is a technique for discovering “in-use” processes from traces emitted to event logs. Researchers have recently explored applying this technique to documenting processes discovered in software applications. However, the requirements for emitting events to support Process Mining against software applications have not been well documented. Furthermore, the linking of end-user intentional behavior to software quality as demonstrated in the discovered processes has not been well articulated. After evaluating the literature, this thesis suggested focusing on user goals and actual, in-use processes as an input to an Agile software development life cycle in order to improve software quality. It also provided suggestions for instrumenting software applications to support Process Mining techniques

    Discovering Complex Incomplete Periodic Patterns through Logi-cal Derivations

    Abstract Discovering complex and incomplete periodic patterns in the logs of events is a complicated and time consuming task. This work shows that it is possible to discover complex and incomplete periodic patterns through finding simple patterns first and through logical derivations of complex and incomplete patterns later on. The paper defines a syntax and semantics of a class of periodic patterns that frequently occur in the logs of events. A system of derivation rules proposed in the paper can be used to transform a set of periodic patterns into a logically equivalent set of patterns. The rules are used in the algorithms that derive complex and incomplete periodic patterns. A prototype implementation of the algorithms that discover complex and incomplete periodic patterns in the logs of events is presented

Raamistik on juhendiks ettevõtetele ja teadlastele, teadustöötajatele, kes uurivad selles valdkonnas ja ettevõtetele, kes soovivad neid tehnikaid oma valdkonnas rakendada.The goal of predictive monitoring is to help the business achieve their goals, help them take the right business path, predict outcomes, estimate delivery time, and make business processes risk aware. In this thesis, we have carefully collected and reviewed in detail all literature which falls in this process mining category. The objective of the thesis is to design a Predictive Monitoring Framework and classify the different predictive monitoring techniques. The framework acts as a guide for researchers and businesses. Researchers who are investigating in this field and businesses who want to apply these techniques in their respective field

    Simplified literature review on the applicability of process mining to RPA

    Business processes play an important role in any enterprise value chain and are involved in key activities such as the purchase of material, sales, and hiring of staff. Hence, mediumsized and large companies are inherently process-oriented. Managing business processes is yet, due to new regulations, technologies, and market changes, not a trivial task. In addition to that, the execution of business processes may be repetitive, tedious and time demanding. For this reason, there is a high motivation to automate such processes, which has been facilitated by the popularisation of Robotic Process Automation (RPA). RPA brings a cost-efficient solution for process automation along with a substantial challenge that is to decide what process to automate and how. Process Mining tools and techniques have been largely adopted to address challenges faced during RPA implementations. The goal of this work is to present the usage of Process Mining in RPA implementations through a simplified systematic literature review.Processos de negócio possuem um papel importante em qualquer cadeia de valores corporativa e estão envolvidos em atividades chave como compras de suprimentos, vendas e contratações de recursos humanos. Por esse motivo, empresas de médio e grande porte são inerentemente orientadas a processos. Devido à novas regulamentações, tecnologias e mudanças de mercado, a gestão de processos de negócio é ainda uma tarefa não trivial. Além disso, a execução de processos de negócio pode ser repetitiva, entendiante e demandar tempo. Por isso, existe uma alta motivação para automatizar processos de negócio, o que tem sido facilitado pela popularização da Automação de Processos Robóticos (Robotic Process Automation - RPA).
