    Connectors meet Choreographies

    We present Cho-Reo-graphies (CR), a new language model that unites two powerful programming paradigms for concurrent software based on communicating processes: Choreographic Programming and Exogenous Coordination. In CR, programmers specify the desired communications among processes using a choreography, and define how communications should be concretely animated by connectors given as constraint automata (e.g., synchronous barriers and asynchronous multi-casts). CR is the first choreography calculus where different communication semantics (determined by connectors) can be freely mixed; since connectors are user-defined, CR also supports many communication semantics that were previously unavailable for choreographies. We develop a static analysis that guarantees that a choreography in CR and its user-defined connectors are compatible, define a compiler from choreographies to a process calculus based on connectors, and prove that compatibility guarantees deadlock-freedom of the compiled process implementations

    Brain-Switches for Asynchronous Brain−Computer Interfaces: A Systematic Review

    A brain–computer interface (BCI) has been extensively studied to develop a novel communication system for disabled people using their brain activities. An asynchronous BCI system is more realistic and practical than a synchronous BCI system, in that, BCI commands can be generated whenever the user wants. However, the relatively low performance of an asynchronous BCI system is problematic because redundant BCI commands are required to correct false-positive operations. To significantly reduce the number of false-positive operations of an asynchronous BCI system, a two-step approach has been proposed using a brain-switch that first determines whether the user wants to use an asynchronous BCI system before the operation of the asynchronous BCI system. This study presents a systematic review of the state-of-the-art brain-switch techniques and future research directions.     Implementing system simulation of C3 systems using autonomous objects

    The basis of all conflict recognition in simulation is a common frame of reference. Synchronous discrete-event simulation relies on the fixed points in time as the basic frame of reference. Asynchronous discrete-event simulation relies on fixed-points in the model space as the basic frame of reference. Neither approach provides sufficient support for autonomous objects. The use of a spatial template as a frame of reference is proposed to address these insufficiencies. The concept of a spatial template is defined and an implementation approach offered. Discussed are the uses of this approach to analyze the integration of sensor data associated with Command, Control, and Communication systems

    Asynchronous iterative computations with Web information retrieval structures: The PageRank case

    There are several ideas being used today for Web information retrieval, and specifically in Web search engines. The PageRank algorithm is one of those that introduce a content-neutral ranking function over Web pages. This ranking is applied to the set of pages returned by the Google search engine in response to posting a search query. PageRank is based in part on two simple common sense concepts: (i)A page is important if many important pages include links to it. (ii)A page containing many links has reduced impact on the importance of the pages it links to. In this paper we focus on asynchronous iterative schemes to compute PageRank over large sets of Web pages. The elimination of the synchronizing phases is expected to be advantageous on heterogeneous platforms. The motivation for a possible move to such large scale distributed platforms lies in the size of matrices representing Web structure. In orders of magnitude: 101010^{10} pages with 101110^{11} nonzero elements and 101210^{12} bytes just to store a small percentage of the Web (the already crawled); distributed memory machines are necessary for such computations. The present research is part of our general objective, to explore the potential of asynchronous computational models as an underlying framework for very large scale computations over the Grid. The area of ``internet algorithmics'' appears to offer many occasions for computations of unprecedent dimensionality that would be good candidates for this framework.Comment: 8 pages to appear at ParCo2005 Conference Proceeding

    BCI-Based Navigation in Virtual and Real Environments

    A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system that enables people to control an external device with their brain activity, without the need of any muscular activity. Researchers in the BCI field aim to develop applications to improve the quality of life of severely disabled patients, for whom a BCI can be a useful channel for interaction with their environment. Some of these systems are intended to control a mobile device (e. g. a wheelchair). Virtual Reality is a powerful tool that can provide the subjects with an opportunity to train and to test different applications in a safe environment.     Analytical Bit Error Rate Performance of DS-CDMA Ad Hoc Networks using Large Area Synchronous Spreading Sequences

    The performance of large area synchronous (LAS) direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) assisted ad hoc networks is investigated in the context of a single-hop infinite mesh of rectilinearly located ad hoc nodes. It is shown that LAS DS-CDMA exhibits a significantly better performance than the family of traditional spreading sequences used in a quasisynchronous DS-CDMA scenario having a low number of resolvable multipath components and a sufficiently high number of RAKE receiver branches. The benefits of LAS codes in ad hoc networks are multifold: (i) Their performance is noise-limited, rather than interference-limited, provided that the multipath and multi-user interference arrives within their interference free window. (ii) Under the same conditions LAS codes are robust against the ‘near–far’ effects imposed by ad hoc networks operating without base-station-aided power control, without accurate synchronisation and without implementationally complex interference cancellers
