On Steering Swarms
The main contribution of this paper is a novel method allowing an external
observer/controller to steer and guide swarms of identical and
indistinguishable agents, in spite of the agents' lack of information on
absolute location and orientation. Importantly, this is done via simple global
broadcast signals, based on the observed average swarm location, with no need
to send control signals to any specific agent in the swarm
Swarm shape manipulation through connection control
The control of a large swarm of distributed agents is a well known challenge within the study of unmanned autonomous systems. However, it also presents many new opportunities. The advantages of operating a swarm through distributed means has been assessed in the literature for efficiency from both operational and economical aspects; practically as the number of agents increases, distributed control is favoured over centralised control, as it can reduce agent computational costs and increase robustness on the swarm. Distributed architectures, however, can present the drawback of requiring knowledge of the whole swarm state, therefore limiting the scalability of the swarm. In this paper a strategy is presented to address the challenges of distributed architectures, changing the way in which the swarm shape is controlled and providing a step towards verifiable swarm behaviour, achieving new configurations, while saving communication and computation resources. Instead of applying change at agent level (e.g. modify its guidance law), the sensing of the agents is addressed to a portion of agents, differentially driving their behaviour. This strategy is applied for swarms controlled by artificial potential functions which would ordinarily require global knowledge and all-to-all interactions. Limiting the agents' knowledge is proposed for the first time in this work as a methodology rather than obstacle to obtain desired swarm behaviour
Dynamic coordinated control laws in multiple agent models
We present an active control scheme of a kinetic model of swarming. It has
been shown previously that the global control scheme for the model, presented
in \cite{JK04}, gives rise to spontaneous collective organization of agents
into a unified coherent swarm, via a long-range attractive and short-range
repulsive potential. We extend these results by presenting control laws whereby
a single swarm is broken into independently functioning subswarm clusters. The
transition between one coordinated swarm and multiple clustered subswarms is
managed simply with a homotopy parameter. Additionally, we present as an
alternate formulation, a local control law for the same model, which implements
dynamic barrier avoidance behavior, and in which swarm coherence emerges

Towards a Smart World: Hazard Levels for Monitoring of Autonomous Vehiclesā Swarms
This work explores the creation of quantifiable indices to monitor the safe operations and movement of families of autonomous vehicles (AV) in restricted highway-like environments. Specifically, this work will explore the creation of ad-hoc rules for monitoring lateral and longitudinal movement of multiple AVs based on behavior that mimics swarm and flock movement (or particle swarm motion). This exploratory work is sponsored by the Emerging Leader Seed grant program of the Mineta Transportation Institute and aims at investigating feasibility of adaptation of particle swarm motion to control families of autonomous vehicles. Specifically, it explores how particle swarm approaches can be augmented by setting safety thresholds and fail-safe mechanisms to avoid collisions in off-nominal situations. This concept leverages the integration of the notion of hazard and danger levels (i.e., measures of the āclosenessā to a given accident scenario, typically used in robotics) with the concept of safety distance and separation/collision avoidance for ground vehicles. A draft of implementation of four hazard level functions indicates that safety thresholds can be set up to autonomously trigger lateral and longitudinal motion control based on three main rules respectively based on speed, heading, and braking distance to steer the vehicle and maintain separation/avoid collisions in families of autonomous vehicles. The concepts here presented can be used to set up a high-level framework for developing artificial intelligence algorithms that can serve as back-up to standard machine learning approaches for control and steering of autonomous vehicles. Although there are no constraints on the conceptās implementation, it is expected that this work would be most relevant for highly-automated Level 4 and Level 5 vehicles, capable of communicating with each other and in the presence of a monitoring ground control center for the operations of the swarm

Distributed control of multi-robot systems using bifurcating potential fields
The distributed control of multi-robot systems has been shown to have advantages over conventional single robot systems. These include scalability, flexibility and robustness to failures. This paper considers pattern formation and reconfigurability in a multi-robot system using bifurcating potential fields. It is shown how various patterns can be achieved through a simple free parameter change. In addition the stability of the system of robots is proven to ensure that desired behaviours always occur
