Multimodal One-Shot Learning of Speech and Images
Imagine a robot is shown new concepts visually together with spoken tags,
e.g. "milk", "eggs", "butter". After seeing one paired audio-visual example per
class, it is shown a new set of unseen instances of these objects, and asked to
pick the "milk". Without receiving any hard labels, could it learn to match the
new continuous speech input to the correct visual instance? Although unimodal
one-shot learning has been studied, where one labelled example in a single
modality is given per class, this example motivates multimodal one-shot
learning. Our main contribution is to formally define this task, and to propose
several baseline and advanced models. We use a dataset of paired spoken and
visual digits to specifically investigate recent advances in Siamese
convolutional neural networks. Our best Siamese model achieves twice the
accuracy of a nearest neighbour model using pixel-distance over images and
dynamic time warping over speech in 11-way cross-modal matching.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables; accepted to ICASSP 201
A hierarchy of recurrent networks for speech recognition
Generative models for sequential data based on directed graphs of Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) are able to accurately model high dimensional sequences as recently shown. In these models, temporal dependencies in the input are discovered by either buffering previous visible variables or by recurrent connections of the hidden variables. Here we propose a modification of these models, the Temporal Reservoir Machine (TRM). It utilizes a recurrent artificial neural network (ANN) for integrating information from the input over
time. This information is then fed into a RBM at each time step. To avoid difficulties of recurrent network learning, the ANN remains untrained and hence can be thought of as a random feature extractor. Using the architecture of multi-layer RBMs (Deep Belief Networks), the TRMs can be used as a building block for complex hierarchical models. This approach unifies RBM-based approaches for sequential data modeling and the Echo State Network, a powerful approach for black-box system identification. The TRM is tested on a spoken digits task under noisy conditions, and competitive performances compared to previous models are observed
Evalita-Istc Comparison Of Open Source Tools On Clean And Noisy Digits Recognition Tasks
EVALITA is a recent initiative devoted to the evaluation of Natural Language and Speech Processing tools for Italian. The general objective of EVALITA is to promote the development of language and speech technologies for the Italian language, providing a shared framework where different systems and approaches can be evaluated in a consistent manner. In this work the results of the evaluation of three open source ASR toolkits (CSLU Speech Tools, CSLR SONIC, SPHINX) working on the EVALITA clean and noisy digits recognition task will be described together with the complete evaluation methodology
Robust ASR using Support Vector Machines
The improved theoretical properties of Support Vector Machines with respect to other machine learning alternatives due to their max-margin training paradigm have led us to suggest them as a good technique for robust speech recognition. However, important shortcomings have had to be circumvented, the most important being the normalisation of the time duration of different realisations of the acoustic speech units.
In this paper, we have compared two approaches in noisy environments: first, a hybrid HMM–SVM solution where a fixed number of frames is selected by means of an HMM segmentation and second, a normalisation kernel called Dynamic Time Alignment Kernel (DTAK) first introduced in Shimodaira et al. [Shimodaira, H., Noma, K., Nakai, M., Sagayama, S., 2001. Support vector machine with dynamic time-alignment kernel for speech recognition. In: Proc. Eurospeech, Aalborg, Denmark, pp. 1841–1844] and based on DTW (Dynamic Time Warping). Special attention has been paid to the adaptation of both alternatives to noisy environments, comparing two types of parameterisations and performing suitable feature normalisation operations. The results show that the DTA Kernel provides important advantages over the baseline HMM system in medium to bad noise conditions, also outperforming the results of the hybrid system.Publicad
Vid2speech: Speech Reconstruction from Silent Video
Speechreading is a notoriously difficult task for humans to perform. In this
paper we present an end-to-end model based on a convolutional neural network
(CNN) for generating an intelligible acoustic speech signal from silent video
frames of a speaking person. The proposed CNN generates sound features for each
frame based on its neighboring frames. Waveforms are then synthesized from the
learned speech features to produce intelligible speech. We show that by
leveraging the automatic feature learning capabilities of a CNN, we can obtain
state-of-the-art word intelligibility on the GRID dataset, and show promising
results for learning out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words.Comment: Accepted for publication at ICASSP 201
