Investigating Decision Support Techniques for Automating Cloud Service Selection

Flexible aromatic disulfide monomers for high-performance self-healable linear and cross-linked poly(urethane-urea) coatings
Implementation of the self-healing concept in coatings is challenging because they have to combine mechanical strength and chain mobility. This challenge is addressed in this work by studying the effect of the polymer microstructure on the mechanical properties and self-healing ability of waterborne poly(urethane-urea) coatings containing aromatic disulfide dynamic bonds. The structural modifications studied are the concentration and flexibility of the aromatic disulfide units and the effect of cross-linking. The effects and limits of these structural changes on the mechanical properties of the polymers and their healability were determined via a combination of DMA measurements, tensile tests, and rheological and scratch closure experiments. It was found that the flexibility of the disulfide unit was key to develop more efficient self-healing materials which offer the necessary molecular mobility for self-healing while simultaneously maintaining a level of mechanical strength that are essential for coating applications.The European Unionâs Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme is accredited for the financial support through Project TRACKWAY-ITN 642514 under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement. Supporting text mining for e-Science: the challenges for Grid-enabled natural language processing
Over the last few years, language technology has moved rapidly from 'applied research' to 'engineering', and from small-scale to large-scale engineering. Applications such as advanced text mining systems are feasible, but very resource-intensive, while research seeking to address the underlying language processing questions faces very real practical and methodological limitations. The e-Science vision, and the creation of the e-Science Grid, promises the level of integrated large-scale technological support required to sustain this important and successful new technology area. In this paper, we discuss the foundations for the deployment of text mining and other language technology on the Grid - the protocols and tools required to build distributed large-scale language technology systems, meeting the needs of users, application builders and researchers
Composing Distributed Data-intensive Web Services Using a Flexible Memetic Algorithm
Web Service Composition (WSC) is a particularly promising application of Web
services, where multiple individual services with specific functionalities are
composed to accomplish a more complex task, which must fulfil functional
requirements and optimise Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, simultaneously.
Additionally, large quantities of data, produced by technological advances,
need to be exchanged between services. Data-intensive Web services, which
manipulate and deal with those data, are of great interest to implement
data-intensive processes, such as distributed Data-intensive Web Service
Composition (DWSC). Researchers have proposed Evolutionary Computing (EC)
fully-automated WSC techniques that meet all the above factors. Some of these
works employed Memetic Algorithms (MAs) to enhance the performance of EC
through increasing its exploitation ability of in searching neighbourhood area
of a solution. However, those works are not efficient or effective. This paper
proposes an MA-based approach to solving the problem of distributed DWSC in an
effective and efficient manner. In particular, we develop an MA that hybridises
EC with a flexible local search technique incorporating distance of services.
An evaluation using benchmark datasets is carried out, comparing existing
state-of-the-art methods. Results show that our proposed method has the highest

The societal embedding of sustainable Product-Service Systems: Looking for synergies between strategic design and transition studies
Copyright @ 2014 Greenleaf Publishing.Eco-efficient Product-Service System (PSS) innovations represent a promising approach to sustainability, but their implementation and diffusion is hindered by several cultural, corporate and regulative barriers. Hence, an important challenge is not only to conceive sustainable PSS concepts, but also to understand how to manage, support and orient the introduction and diffusion of these concepts. Building upon recent advances in the innovation studies field (in particular the contributions from transition studies) this chapter puts forward a conceptual framework for the introduction and scaling-up of eco-efficient PSSs. A key role is given to the implementation of socio-technical experiments: protected spaces where radical innovations can be tested, become more mature, and potentially challenge and change dominant socio-technical practices, habits and institutions. Starting from these considerations this chapter investigates the potential contribution that a strategic design approach can make to stimulating and supporting the societal embedding of eco-efficient PSS innovations. A new strategic design role thus emerges, a role in which the ideation and development of sustainable PSS concepts is coupled with the designing of appropriate transition paths to gradually incubate, introduce and diffuse these concepts.
