    This thesis describes an effort to enhance the control capabilities of an electric motor. It is in the interest of TetraPak that the research on this motor is performed so that it, in the future, can be a part of their production systems. The thesis has been separated into three main parts, where in the first part we are trying to find a model that describes the process. The second part describes how the controllers were developed and the final part how they were implemented in real time. Our goal was to successfully identify the motor and control it within the, from TetraPak, specified demands. And if time allowed, do it all automatically

    Power System Stability Analysis using Neural Network

    This work focuses on the design of modern power system controllers for automatic voltage regulators (AVR) and the applications of machine learning (ML) algorithms to correctly classify the stability of the IEEE 14 bus system. The LQG controller performs the best time domain characteristics compared to PID and LQG, while the sensor and amplifier gain is changed in a dynamic passion. After that, the IEEE 14 bus system is modeled, and contingency scenarios are simulated in the System Modelica Dymola environment. Application of the Monte Carlo principle with modified Poissons probability distribution principle is reviewed from the literature that reduces the total contingency from 1000k to 20k. The damping ratio of the contingency is then extracted, pre-processed, and fed to ML algorithms, such as logistic regression, support vector machine, decision trees, random forests, Naive Bayes, and k-nearest neighbor. A neural network (NN) of one, two, three, five, seven, and ten hidden layers with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% data size is considered to observe and compare the prediction time, accuracy, precision, and recall value. At lower data size, 25%, in the neural network with two-hidden layers and a single hidden layer, the accuracy becomes 95.70% and 97.38%, respectively. Increasing the hidden layer of NN beyond a second does not increase the overall score and takes a much longer prediction time; thus could be discarded for similar analysis. Moreover, when five, seven, and ten hidden layers are used, the F1 score reduces. However, in practical scenarios, where the data set contains more features and a variety of classes, higher data size is required for NN for proper training. This research will provide more insight into the damping ratio-based system stability prediction with traditional ML algorithms and neural networks.Comment: Masters Thesis Dissertatio

    Although significant advances have been made in modeling and controlling flexible systems, there remains a need for improvements in model accuracy and in control performance. The finite element models of flexible systems are unduly complex and are almost intractable to optimum parameter estimation for refinement using experimental data. Distributed parameter or continuum modeling offers some advantages and some challenges in both modeling and control. Continuum models often result in a significantly reduced number of model parameters, thereby enabling optimum parameter estimation. The dynamic equations of motion of continuum models provide the advantage of allowing the embedding of the control system dynamics, thus forming a complete set of system dynamics. There is also increased insight provided by the continuum model approach

    The estimation and compensation of processes with time delays

    The estimation and compensation of processes with time delays have been of interest to academics and practitioners for several decades. A full review of the literature for both model parameter and time delay estimation is presented. Gradient methods of parameter estimation, in open loop, in the time and frequency domains are subsequently considered in detail. Firstly, an algorithm is developed, using an appropriate gradient algorithm, for the estimation of all the parameters of an appropriate process model with time delay, in open loop, in the time domain. The convergence of the model parameters to the process parameters is considered analytically and in simulation. The estimation of the process parameters in the frequency domain is also addressed, with analytical procedures being defined to provide initial estimates of the model parameters, and a gradient algorithm being used to refine these estimates to attain the global minimum of the cost function that is optimised. The focus of the thesis is subsequently broadened with the consideration of compensation methods for processes with time delays. These methods are reviewed in a comprehensive manner, and the design of a modified Smith predictor, which facilitates a better regulator response than does the Smith predictor, is considered in detail. Gradient algorithms are subsequently developed for the estimation of process parameters (including time delay) in closed loop, in the Smith predictor and modified Smith predictor structures, in the time domain; the convergence of the model parameters to the process parameters is considered analytically and in simulation. The thesis concludes with an overview of the methods developed, and projections regarding future developments in the topics under consideration

    Fault Detection, Diagnosis and Fault Tolerance Approaches in Dynamic Systems based on Black-Box Models

    In this dissertation new contributions to the research area of fault detection and diagnosis in dynamic systems are presented. The main research effort has been done on the development of new on-line model-based fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) approaches based on blackbox models (linear ARX models, and neural nonlinear ARX models). From a theoretical point of view a white-box model is more desirable to perform the FDD tasks, but in most cases it is very hard, or even impossible, to obtain. When the systems are complex, or difficult to model, modelling based on black-box models is usually a good and often the only alternative. The performance of the system identification methods plays a crucial role in the FDD methods proposed. Great research efforts have been made on the development of linear and nonlinear FDD approaches to detect and diagnose multiplicative (parametric) faults, since most of the past research work has been done focused on additive faults on sensors and actuators. The main pre-requisites for the FDD methods developed are: a) the on-line application in a real-time environment for systems under closed-loop control; b) the algorithms must be implemented in discrete time, and the plants are systems in continuous time; c) a two or three dimensional space for visualization and interpretation of the fault symptoms. An engineering and pragmatic view of FDD approaches has been followed, and some new theoretical contributions are presented in this dissertation. The fault tolerance problem and the fault tolerant control (FTC) have been investigated, and some ideas of the new FDD approaches have been incorporated in the FTC context. One of the main ideas underlying the research done in this work is to detect and diagnose faults occurring in continuous time systems via the analysis of the effect on the parameters of the discrete time black-box ARX models or associated features. In the FDD methods proposed, models for nominal operation and models for each faulty situation are constructed in off-line operation, and used a posteriori in on-line operation. The state of the art and some background concepts used for the research come from many scientific areas. The main concepts related to data mining, multivariate statistics (principal component analysis, PCA), linear and nonlinear dynamic systems, black-box models, system identification, fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), pattern recognition and discriminant analysis, and fault tolerant control (FTC), are briefly described. A sliding window version of the principal components regression algorithm, termed SW-PCR, is proposed for parameter estimation. The sliding window parameter estimation algorithms are most appropriate for fault detection and diagnosis than the recursive algorithms. For linear SISO systems, a new fault detection and diagnosis approach based on dynamic features (static gain and bandwidth) of ARX models is proposed, using a pattern classification approach based on neural nonlinear discriminant analysis (NNLDA). A new approach for fault detection (FDE) is proposed based on the application of the PCA method to the parameter space of ARX models; this allows a dimensional reduction, and the definition of thresholds based on multivariate statistics. This FDE method has been combined with a fault diagnosis (FDG) method based on an influence matrix (IMX). This combined FDD method (PCA & IMX) is suitable to deal with SISO or MIMO linear systems. Most of the research on the fault detection and diagnosis area has been done for linear systems. Few investigations exist in the FDD approaches for nonlinear systems. In this work, two new nonlinear approaches to FDD are proposed that are appropriate to SISO or MISO systems. A new architecture for a neural recurrent output predictor (NROP) is proposed, incorporating an embedded neural parallel model, an external feedback and an adjustable gain (design parameter). A new fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) approach for nonlinear systems is proposed based on a bank of neural recurrent output predictors (NROPs). Each neural NROP predictor is tuned to a specific fault. Also, a new FDD method based on the application of neural nonlinear PCA to ARX model parameters is proposed, combined with a pattern classification approach based on neural nonlinear discriminant analysis. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed FDD methodologies, many experiments have been done using simulation models and a real setup. All the algorithms have been developed in discrete time, except the process models. The process models considered for the validation and tests of the FDD approaches are: a) a first order linear SISO system; b) a second order SISO model of a DC motor; c) a MIMO system model, the three-tank benchmark. A real nonlinear DC motor setup has also been used. A fault tolerant control (FTC) approach has been proposed to solve the typical reconfiguration problem formulated for the three-tank benchmark. This FTC approach incorporates the FDD method based on a bank of NROP predictors, and on an adaptive optimal linear quadratic Gaussian controller

    Development of advanced control strategies for Adaptive Optics systems

    Atmospheric turbulence is a fast disturbance that requires high control frequency. At the same time, celestial objects are faint sources of light and thus WFSs often work in a low photon count regime. These two conditions require a trade-off between high closed-loop control frequency to improve the disturbance rejection performance, and large WFS exposure time to gather enough photons for the integrated signal to increase the Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR), making the control a delicate yet fundamental aspect for AO systems. The AO plant and atmospheric turbulence were formalized as state-space linear time-invariant systems. The full AO system model is the ground upon which a model-based control can be designed. A Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor was used to measure the horizontal atmospheric turbulence. The experimental measurements yielded to the Cn2 atmospheric structure parameter, which is key to describe the turbulence statistics, and the Zernike terms time-series. Experimental validation shows that the centroid extraction algorithm implemented on the Jetson GPU outperforms (i.e. is faster) than the CPU implementation on the same hardware. In fact, due to the construction of the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, the intensity image captured from its camera is partitioned into several sub-images, each related to a point of the incoming wavefront. Such sub-images are independent each-other and can be computed concurrently. The AO model is exploited to automatically design an advanced linear-quadratic Gaussian controller with integral action. Experimental evidence shows that the system augmentation approach outperforms the simple integrator and the integrator filtered with the Kalman predictor, and that it requires less parameters to tune

    Modeling, identification and control of cart-pole system

    To understand any physical world system, a proper mathematical model is required. With the help of mathematical model, the system can be studied and controlled. There are different ways to develop a mathematical model such as first principle method and system identification method. First principle method is generally used when there is sufficient knowledge of the physical world system but system identification is used when there is no knowledge of the system. System identification is widely used to develop mathematical model of complex, non-linear systems. Cart-pole system is a benchmark problem in control system where the control objective is to balance the inverted pendulum mounted on the cart to a vertical position. This complete system is nonlinear in nature and the mathematical model can’t be efficiently calculated using first principle modeling. So system identification method is used to develop the mathematical model of the said system. This thesis finds out the linearized mathematical model of the said cart-pole system using parametric system identification procedure. Parametric system identification procedure consists of experiment design, model structure selection, parameter estimation and model validation. This thesis also designs linear and non-linear controller for the said system. For linearized model of cart-pole system some of the linear controllers designed are LQR, LQR-Pole-placement-PID, Fuzzy-PID, LQG and H-infinity. For the nonlinear model of cart-pole system, the control techniques discussed are the partial feedback linearization and classical feedback linearization control
