From MANET to people-centric networking: Milestones and open research challenges
In this paper, we discuss the state of the art of (mobile) multi-hop ad hoc networking with the aim to present the current status of the research activities and identify the consolidated research areas, with limited research opportunities, and the hot and emerging research areas for which further research is required. We start by briefly discussing the MANET paradigm, and why the research on MANET protocols is now a cold research topic. Then we analyze the active research areas. Specifically, after discussing the wireless-network technologies, we analyze four successful ad hoc networking paradigms, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks, and sensor networks that emerged from the MANET world. We also present an emerging research direction in the multi-hop ad hoc networking field: people centric networking, triggered by the increasing penetration of the smartphones in everyday life, which is generating a people-centric revolution in computing and communications
Performance of management solutions and cooperation approaches for vehicular delay-tolerant networks
A wide range of daily-life applications supported by vehicular networks attracted the interest,
not only from the research community, but also from governments and the automotive
industry. For example, they can be used to enable services that assist drivers on the roads (e.g.,
road safety, traffic monitoring), to spread commercial and entertainment contents (e.g., publicity),
or to enable communications on remote or rural regions where it is not possible to have
a common network infrastructure. Nonetheless, the unique properties of vehicular networks
raise several challenges that greatly impact the deployment of these networks.
Most of the challenges faced by vehicular networks arise from the highly dynamic network
topology, which leads to short and sporadic contact opportunities, disruption, variable
node density, and intermittent connectivity. This situation makes data dissemination an interesting
research topic within the vehicular networking area, which is addressed by this study.
The work described along this thesis is motivated by the need to propose new solutions to deal
with data dissemination problems in vehicular networking focusing on vehicular delay-tolerant
networks (VDTNs).
To guarantee the success of data dissemination in vehicular networks scenarios it is important
to ensure that network nodes cooperate with each other. However, it is not possible
to ensure a fully cooperative scenario. This situation makes vehicular networks suitable to the
presence of selfish and misbehavior nodes, which may result in a significant decrease of the
overall network performance. Thus, cooperative nodes may suffer from the overwhelming load
of services from other nodes, which comprises their performance.
Trying to solve some of these problems, this thesis presents several proposals and studies
on the impact of cooperation, monitoring, and management strategies on the network performance
of the VDTN architecture. The main goal of these proposals is to enhance the network
performance. In particular, cooperation and management approaches are exploited to improve
and optimize the use of network resources. It is demonstrated the performance gains attainable
in a VDTN through both types of approaches, not only in terms of bundle delivery probability,
but also in terms of wasted resources.
The results and achievements observed on this research work are intended to contribute
to the advance of the state-of-the-art on methods and strategies for overcome the challenges
that arise from the unique characteristics and conceptual design of vehicular networks.O vasto número de aplicações e cenários suportados pelas redes veiculares faz com que
estas atraiam o interesse nĂŁo sĂł da comunidade cientĂfica, mas tambĂ©m dos governos e da indĂşstria
automĂłvel. A tĂtulo de exemplo, estas podem ser usadas para a implementação de serviços
e aplicações que podem ajudar os condutores dos veĂculos a tomar decisões nas estradas, para
a disseminação de conteúdos publicitários, ou ainda, para permitir que existam comunicações
em zonas rurais ou remotas onde nĂŁo Ă© possĂvel ter uma infraestrutura de rede convencional.
Contudo, as propriedades únicas das redes veiculares fazem com que seja necessário ultrapassar
um conjunto de desafios que tĂŞm grande impacto na sua aplicabilidade.
A maioria dos desafios que as redes veiculares enfrentam advĂŞm da grande mobilidade dos
veĂculos e da topologia de rede que está em constante mutação. Esta situação faz com que este
tipo de rede seja suscetĂvel de disrupção, que as oportunidades de contacto sejam escassas e de
curta duração, e que a ligação seja intermitente. Fruto destas adversidades, a disseminação dos
dados torna-se um tópico de investigação bastante promissor na área das redes veiculares e por
esta mesma razão é abordada neste trabalho de investigação. O trabalho descrito nesta tese é
motivado pela necessidade de propor novas abordagens para lidar com os problemas inerentes
à disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares.
Para garantir o sucesso da disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares é importante
que este tipo de redes garanta a cooperação entre os nós da rede. Contudo, neste tipo de ambientes
nĂŁo Ă© possĂvel garantir um cenário totalmente cooperativo. Este cenário faz com que
as redes veiculares sejam suscetĂveis Ă presença de nĂłs nĂŁo cooperativos que comprometem
seriamente o desempenho global da rede. Por outro lado, os nĂłs cooperativos podem ver o seu
desempenho comprometido por causa da sobrecarga de serviços que poderão suportar.
Para tentar resolver alguns destes problemas, esta tese apresenta várias propostas e estudos
sobre o impacto de estratégias de cooperação, monitorização e gestão de rede no desempenho
das redes veiculares com ligações intermitentes (Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networks
- VDTNs). O objetivo das propostas apresentadas nesta tese Ă© melhorar o desempenho global
da rede. Em particular, as estratégias de cooperação e gestão de rede são exploradas para
melhorar e optimizar o uso dos recursos da rede. Ficou demonstrado que o uso deste tipo de
estratégias e metodologias contribui para um aumento significativo do desempenho da rede,
não só em termos de agregados de pacotes (“bundles”) entregues, mas também na diminuição
do volume de recursos desperdiçados.
Os resultados observados neste trabalho procuram contribuir para o avanço do estado
da arte em métodos e estratégias que visam ultrapassar alguns dos desafios que advêm das
propriedades e desenho conceptual das redes veiculares
Energy-efficient Transitional Near-* Computing
Studies have shown that communication networks, devices accessing the Internet, and data centers account for 4.6% of the worldwide electricity consumption.
Although data centers, core network equipment, and mobile devices are getting more energy-efficient, the amount of data that is being processed, transferred, and stored is vastly increasing.
Recent computer paradigms, such as fog and edge computing, try to improve this situation by processing data near the user, the network, the devices, and the data itself.
In this thesis, these trends are summarized under the new term near-* or near-everything computing.
Furthermore, a novel paradigm designed to increase the energy efficiency of near-* computing is proposed: transitional computing.
It transfers multi-mechanism transitions, a recently developed paradigm for a highly adaptable future Internet, from the field of communication systems to computing systems.
Moreover, three types of novel transitions are introduced to achieve gains in energy efficiency in near-* environments, spanning from private Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds, Software-defined Wireless Networks (SDWNs) at the edge of the network, Disruption-Tolerant Information-Centric Networks (DTN-ICNs) involving mobile devices, sensors, edge devices as well as programmable components on a mobile System-on-a-Chip (SoC).
Finally, the novel idea of transitional near-* computing for emergency response applications is presented
to assist rescuers and affected persons during an emergency event or a disaster, although connections to cloud services and social networks might be disturbed by network outages, and network bandwidth and battery power of mobile devices might be limited
Methodologies for the analysis of value from delay-tolerant inter-satellite networking
In a world that is becoming increasingly connected, both in the sense of people and devices, it is of no surprise that users of the data enabled by satellites are exploring the potential brought about from a more connected Earth orbit environment. Lower data latency, higher revisit rates and higher volumes of information are the order of the day, and inter-connectivity is one of the ways in which this could be achieved. Within this dissertation, three main topics are investigated and built upon. First, the process of routing data through intermittently connected delay-tolerant networks is examined and a new routing protocol introduced, called Spae. The consideration of downstream resource limitations forms the heart of this novel approach which is shown to provide improvements in data routing that closely match that of a theoretically optimal scheme. Next, the value of inter-satellite networking is derived in such a way that removes the difficult task of costing the enabling inter-satellite link technology. Instead, value is defined as the price one should be willing to pay for the technology while retaining a mission value greater than its non-networking counterpart. This is achieved through the use of multi-attribute utility theory, trade-space analysis and system modelling, and demonstrated in two case studies. Finally, the effects of uncertainty in the form of sub-system failure are considered. Inter-satellite networking is shown to increase a system's resilience to failure through introduction of additional, partially failed states, made possible by data relay. The lifetime value of a system is then captured using a semi-analytical approach exploiting Markov chains, validated with a numerical Monte Carlo simulation approach. EFFICIENT DYNAMIC ADDRESSING BASED ROUTING FOR UNDERWATER WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
This thesis presents a study about the problem of data gathering in the inhospitable
underwater environment. Besides long propagation delays and high error probability,
continuous node movement also makes it difficult to manage the routing information
during the process of data forwarding. In order to overcome the problem of large
propagation delays and unreliable link quality, many algorithms have been proposed
and some of them provide good solutions for these issues, yet continuous node
movements still need attention. Considering the node mobility as a challenging task,
a distributed routing scheme called Hop-by-Hop Dynamic Addressing Based (H2-
DAB) routing protocol is proposed where every node in the network will be assigned
a routable address quickly and efficiently without any explicit configuration or any
dimensional location information. According to our best knowledge, H2-DAB is first
addressing based routing approach for underwater wireless sensor networks
(UWSNs) and not only has it helped to choose the routing path faster but also
efficiently enables a recovery procedure in case of smooth forwarding failure. The
proposed scheme provides an option where nodes is able to communicate without
any centralized infrastructure, and a mechanism furthermore is available where
nodes can come and leave the network without having any serious effect on the rest
of the network. Moreover, another serious issue in UWSNs is that acoustic links are
subject to high transmission power with high channel impairments that result in
higher error rates and temporary path losses, which accordingly restrict the
efficiency of these networks. The limited resources have made it difficult to design a
protocol which is capable of maximizing the reliability of these networks. For this
purpose, a Two-Hop Acknowledgement (2H-ACK) reliability model where two
copies of the same data packet are maintained in the network without extra burden
on the available resources is proposed. Simulation results show that H2-DAB can
easily manage during the quick routing changes where node movements are very
frequent yet it requires little or no overhead to efficiently complete its tasks
Cooperative control of relay based cellular networks
PhDThe increasing popularity of wireless communications and the higher data
requirements of new types of service lead to higher demands on wireless networks.
Relay based cellular networks have been seen as an effective way to meet users’
increased data rate requirements while still retaining the benefits of a cellular
structure. However, maximizing the probability of providing service and spectrum
efficiency are still major challenges for network operators and engineers because of
the heterogeneous traffic demands, hard-to-predict user movements and complex
traffic models.
In a mobile network, load balancing is recognised as an efficient way to increase
the utilization of limited frequency spectrum at reasonable costs. Cooperative
control based on geographic load balancing is employed to provide flexibility for
relay based cellular networks and to respond to changes in the environment.
According to the potential capability of existing antenna systems, adaptive radio
frequency domain control in the physical layer is explored to provide coverage at
the right place at the right time.
This thesis proposes several effective and efficient approaches to improve
spectrum efficiency using network wide optimization to coordinate the coverage
offered by different network components according to the antenna models and
relay station capability. The approaches include tilting of antenna sectors,
changing the power of omni-directional antennas, and changing the assignment of
relay stations to different base stations. Experiments show that the proposed
approaches offer significant improvements and robustness in heterogeneous traffic
scenarios and when the propagation environment changes. The issue of predicting
the consequence of cooperative decisions regarding antenna configurations when
applied in a realistic environment is described, and a coverage prediction model is
proposed. The consequences of applying changes to the antenna configuration on
handovers are analysed in detail. The performance evaluations are based on a
system level simulator in the context of Mobile WiMAX technology, but the
concepts apply more generally
