    ABM: Looping Reference-Aware Cache Management Scheme for Media-on-Demand Server

    Abstract. Legacy buffer cache management schemes for multimedia server are grounded at the assumption that the application sequentially accesses the multimedia file. However, user access pattern may not be sequential in some circumstances, for example, in distance learning application, where the user may exploit the VCR-like function(rewind and play) of the system and accesses the particular segments of video repeatedly in the middle of sequential playback. Such a looping reference can cause a significant performance degradation of interval-based caching algorithms. And thus an appropriate buffer cache management scheme is required in order to deliver desirable performance even under the workload that exhibits looping reference behavior. We propose Adaptive Buffer cache Management(ABM) scheme which intelligently adapts to the file access characteristics. For each opened file, ABM applies either the LRU replacement or the interval-based caching depending on the Looping Reference Indicator, which indicates that how strong temporally localized access pattern is. According to our experiment, ABM exhibits better buffer cache miss ratio than interval-based caching or LRU, especially when the workload exhibits not only sequential but also looping reference property

    Three-state disk model for high quality and energy efficient streaming media servers

    Energy conservation and emission reduction is an increasingly prominent and global issue in green computing. Among the various components of a streaming media server, the storage system is the biggest power consumer. In this paper, a Three-State Disk Model (3SDM) is proposed to conserve energy for streaming media servers without losing quality. According to the load threshold, the disks are dynamically divided into three states: overload, normal and standby. With the requests arriving and departing, the disk state transition among these three states. The purpose of 3SDM is to skew the load among the disks to achieve high quality and energy efficiency for streaming media applications. The load of disks in overload state will move to disks in normal state to improve the quality of service (QoS) level. The load of disks in normal state will be packed together to switch some disks into standby state to save energy. The key problem here is to identify the blocks that need migrating among disks. A sliding window replacement (SWR) algorithm is developed for this purpose, which calculates the block weight based on the request frequency falling within the window of a block. Employing a validated simulator, this paper evaluates the SWR algorithm for conventional disks based on the proposed 3SDM model. The results show that this scheme is able to yield energy efficient streaming media servers

    Priori information and sliding window based prediction algorithm for energy-efficient storage systems in cloud

    One of the major challenges in cloud computing and data centers is the energy conservation and emission reduction. Accurate prediction algorithms are essential for building energy efficient storage systems in cloud computing. In this paper, we first propose a Three-State Disk Model (3SDM), which can describe the service quality and energy consumption states of a storage system accurately. Based on this model, we develop a method for achieving energy conservation without losing quality by skewing the workload among the disks to transmit the disk states of a storage system. The efficiency of this method is highly dependent on the accuracy of the information predicting the blocks to be accessed and the blocks not be accessed in the near future. We develop a priori information and sliding window based prediction (PISWP) algorithm by taking advantage of the priori information about human behavior and selecting suitable size of sliding window. The PISWP method targets at streaming media applications, but we also check its efficiency on other two applications, news in webpage and new tool released. Disksim, an established storage system simulator, is applied in our experiments to verify the effect of our method for various users’ traces. The results show that this prediction method can bring a high degree energy saving for storage systems in cloud computing environment

    On I/O Performance and Cost Efficiency of Cloud Storage: A Client\u27s Perspective

    Cloud storage has gained increasing popularity in the past few years. In cloud storage, data are stored in the service provider’s data centers; users access data via the network and pay the fees based on the service usage. For such a new storage model, our prior wisdom and optimization schemes on conventional storage may not remain valid nor applicable to the emerging cloud storage. In this dissertation, we focus on understanding and optimizing the I/O performance and cost efficiency of cloud storage from a client’s perspective. We first conduct a comprehensive study to gain insight into the I/O performance behaviors of cloud storage from the client side. Through extensive experiments, we have obtained several critical findings and useful implications for system optimization. We then design a client cache framework, called Pacaca, to further improve end-to-end performance of cloud storage. Pacaca seamlessly integrates parallelized prefetching and cost-aware caching by utilizing the parallelism potential and object correlations of cloud storage. In addition to improving system performance, we have also made efforts to reduce the monetary cost of using cloud storage services by proposing a latency- and cost-aware client caching scheme, called GDS-LC, which can achieve two optimization goals for using cloud storage services: low access latency and low monetary cost. Our experimental results show that our proposed client-side solutions significantly outperform traditional methods. Our study contributes to inspiring the community to reconsider system optimization methods in the cloud environment, especially for the purpose of integrating cloud storage into the current storage stack as a primary storage layer

    Low-latency Networking: Where Latency Lurks and How to Tame It

    While the current generation of mobile and fixed communication networks has been standardized for mobile broadband services, the next generation is driven by the vision of the Internet of Things and mission critical communication services requiring latency in the order of milliseconds or sub-milliseconds. However, these new stringent requirements have a large technical impact on the design of all layers of the communication protocol stack. The cross layer interactions are complex due to the multiple design principles and technologies that contribute to the layers' design and fundamental performance limitations. We will be able to develop low-latency networks only if we address the problem of these complex interactions from the new point of view of sub-milliseconds latency. In this article, we propose a holistic analysis and classification of the main design principles and enabling technologies that will make it possible to deploy low-latency wireless communication networks. We argue that these design principles and enabling technologies must be carefully orchestrated to meet the stringent requirements and to manage the inherent trade-offs between low latency and traditional performance metrics. We also review currently ongoing standardization activities in prominent standards associations, and discuss open problems for future research

    Prefetching and clustering techniques for network based storage.

    The usage of network-based applications is increasing, as network speeds increase, and the use of streaming applications, e.g BBC iPlayer, YouTube etc., running over network infrastructure is becoming commonplace. These applications access data sequentially. However, as processor speeds and the amount of memory available increase, the rate at which streaming applications access data is now faster than the rate at which the blocks can be fetched consecutively from network storage. In addition to sequential access, the system also needs to promptly satisfy demand misses in order for applications to continue their execution. This thesis proposes a design to provide Quality-Of-Service (QoS) for streaming applications (sequential accesses) and demand misses, such that, streaming applications can run without jitter (once they are started) and demand misses can be satisfied in reasonable time using network storage. To implement the proposed design in real time, the thesis presents an analytical model to estimate the average time taken to service a demand miss. Further, it defines and explores the operational space where the proposed QoS could be provided. Using database techniques, this region is then encapsulated into an autonomous algorithm which is verified using simulation. Finally, a prototype Experimental File System (EFS) is designed and implemented to test the algorithm on a real test-bed

    KOLAM : human computer interfaces fro visual analytics in big data imagery

    In the present day, we are faced with a deluge of disparate and dynamic information from multiple heterogeneous sources. Among these are the big data imagery datasets that are rapidly being generated via mature acquisition methods in the geospatial, surveillance (specifically, Wide Area Motion Imagery or WAMI) and biomedical domains. The need to interactively visualize these imagery datasets by using multiple types of views (as needed) into the data is common to these domains. Furthermore, researchers in each domain have additional needs: users of WAMI datasets also need to interactively track objects of interest using algorithms of their choice, visualize the resulting object trajectories and interactively edit these results as needed. While software tools that fulfill each of these requirements individually are available and well-used at present, there is still a need for tools that can combine the desired aspects of visualization, human computer interaction (HCI), data analysis, data management, and (geo-)spatial and temporal data processing into a single flexible and extensible system. KOLAM is an open, cross-platform, interoperable, scalable and extensible framework for visualization and analysis that we have developed to fulfil the above needs. The novel contributions in this thesis are the following: 1) Spatio-temporal caching for animating both giga-pixel and Full Motion Video (FMV) imagery, 2) Human computer interfaces purposefully designed to accommodate big data visualization, 3) Human-in-the-loop interactive video object tracking - ground-truthing of moving objects in wide area imagery using algorithm assisted human-in-the-loop coupled tracking, 4) Coordinated visualization using stacked layers, side-by-side layers/video sub-windows and embedded imagery, 5) Efficient one-click manual tracking, editing and data management of trajectories, 6) Efficient labeling of image segmentation regions and passing these results to desired modules, 7) Visualization of image processing results generated by non-interactive operators using layers, 8) Extension of interactive imagery and trajectory visualization to multi-monitor wall display environments, 9) Geospatial applications: Providing rapid roam, zoom and hyper-jump spatial operations, interactive blending, colormap and histogram enhancement, spherical projection and terrain maps, 10) Biomedical applications: Visualization and target tracking of cell motility in time-lapse cell imagery, collecting ground-truth from experts on whole-slide imagery (WSI) for developing histopathology analytic algorithms and computer-aided diagnosis for cancer grading, and easy-to-use tissue annotation features.Includes bibliographical reference
