On Optimum End-to-End Distortion in MIMO Systems
This paper presents the joint impact of the numbers of antennas,
source-to-channel bandwidth ratio and spatial correlation on the optimum
expected end-to-end distortion in an outage-free MIMO system. In particular,
based on an analytical expression valid for any SNR, a closed-form expression
of the optimum asymptotic expected end-to-end distortion valid for high SNR is
derived. It is comprised of the optimum distortion exponent and the
multiplicative optimum distortion factor. Demonstrated by the simulation
results, the analysis on the joint impact of the optimum distortion exponent
and the optimum distortion factor explains the behavior of the optimum expected
end-to-end distortion varying with the numbers of antennas, source-to-channel
bandwidth ratio and spatial correlation. It is also proved that as the
correlation tends to zero, the optimum asymptotic expected end-to-end
distortion in the setting of correlated channel approaches that in the setting
of uncorrelated channel. The results in this paper could be performance
objectives for analog-source transmission systems. To some extend, they are
instructive for system design.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, submitted to EURASIP Journal on Wireless

Hardware Impairments Aware Transceiver Design for Full-Duplex Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying
In this work we study the behavior of a full-duplex (FD) and
amplify-and-forward (AF) relay with multiple antennas, where hardware
impairments of the FD relay transceiver is taken into account. Due to the
inter-dependency of the transmit relay power on each antenna and the residual
self-interference in an FD-AF relay, we observe a distortion loop that degrades
the system performance when the relay dynamic range is not high. In this
regard, we analyze the relay function in presence of the hardware inaccuracies
and an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the signal to
distortion-plus-noise ratio (SDNR), under relay and source transmit power
constraints. Due to the problem complexity, we propose a
gradient-projection-based (GP) algorithm to obtain an optimal solution.
Moreover, a nonalternating sub-optimal solution is proposed by assuming a
rank-1 relay amplification matrix, and separating the design of the relay
process into multiple stages (MuStR1). The proposed MuStR1 method is then
enhanced by introducing an alternating update over the optimization variables,
denoted as AltMuStR1 algorithm. It is observed that compared to GP, (Alt)MuStR1
algorithms significantly reduce the required computational complexity at the
expense of a slight performance degradation. Finally, the proposed methods are
evaluated under various system conditions, and compared with the methods
available in the current literature. In particular, it is observed that as the
hardware impairments increase, or for a system with a high transmit power, the
impact of applying a distortion-aware design is significant.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
MIMO Transmission with Residual Transmit-RF Impairments
Physical transceiver implementations for multiple-input multiple-output
(MIMO) wireless communication systems suffer from transmit-RF (Tx-RF)
impairments. In this paper, we study the effect on channel capacity and
error-rate performance of residual Tx-RF impairments that defy proper
compensation. In particular, we demonstrate that such residual distortions
severely degrade the performance of (near-)optimum MIMO detection algorithms.
To mitigate this performance loss, we propose an efficient algorithm, which is
based on an i.i.d. Gaussian model for the distortion caused by these
impairments. In order to validate this model, we provide measurement results
based on a 4-stream Tx-RF chain implementation for MIMO orthogonal
frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM).Comment: to be presented at the International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas -

Joint Pilot Design and Uplink Power Allocation in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems
This paper considers pilot design to mitigate pilot contamination and provide
good service for everyone in multi-cell Massive multiple input multiple output
(MIMO) systems. Instead of modeling the pilot design as a combinatorial
assignment problem, as in prior works, we express the pilot signals using a
pilot basis and treat the associated power coefficients as continuous
optimization variables. We compute a lower bound on the uplink capacity for
Rayleigh fading channels with maximum ratio detection that applies with
arbitrary pilot signals. We further formulate the max-min fairness problem
under power budget constraints, with the pilot signals and data powers as
optimization variables. Because this optimization problem is non-deterministic
polynomial-time hard due to signomial constraints, we then propose an algorithm
to obtain a local optimum with polynomial complexity. Our framework serves as a
benchmark for pilot design in scenarios with either ideal or non-ideal
hardware. Numerical results manifest that the proposed optimization algorithms
are close to the optimal solution obtained by exhaustive search for different
pilot assignments and the new pilot structure and optimization bring large
gains over the state-of-the-art suboptimal pilot design.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. Accepted to publish at IEEE Transactions on

Secrecy Energy Efficiency of MIMOME Wiretap Channels with Full-Duplex Jamming
Full-duplex (FD) jamming transceivers are recently shown to enhance the
information security of wireless communication systems by simultaneously
transmitting artificial noise (AN) while receiving information. In this work,
we investigate if FD jamming can also improve the systems secrecy energy
efficiency (SEE) in terms of securely communicated bits-per- Joule, when
considering the additional power used for jamming and self-interference (SI)
cancellation. Moreover, the degrading effect of the residual SI is also taken
into account. In this regard, we formulate a set of SEE maximization problems
for a FD multiple-input-multiple-output multiple-antenna eavesdropper (MIMOME)
wiretap channel, considering both cases where exact or statistical channel
state information (CSI) is available. Due to the intractable problem structure,
we propose iterative solutions in each case with a proven convergence to a
stationary point. Numerical simulations indicate only a marginal SEE gain,
through the utilization of FD jamming, for a wide range of system conditions.
However, when SI can efficiently be mitigated, the observed gain is
considerable for scenarios with a small distance between the FD node and the
eavesdropper, a high Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or for a bidirectional FD
communication setup.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Communication
