    Study of the behavior of a thermoplastic injection mold and prediction of fatigue failure with numerical simulation

    Tese de doutoramento em Engenharia MecânicaO objetivo deste trabalho é a criação de uma metodologia de análise da resistência à fadiga de moldes de injeção de termoplásticos. Uma metodologia capaz de satisfazer o mercado atual que exige a diminuição do tempo de entrega e custos de moldes de injeção, sem comprometer a sua fiabilidade. Para o desenvolvimento desta metodologia, foram utilizados modelos digitais. Com estes modelos é possível executar-se várias iterações sem os custos de um modelo físico. Além do menor custo dos modelos digitais, também é possível compreender o comportamento de cada molde no decorrer da fase de projeto. Com o aumento da complexidade dos componentes injetados, o estudo da resistência à fadiga tende a ser cada vez mais importante. Neste trabalho serão apresentados cuidados a ter na preparação dos modelos digitais, de forma a obter-se resultados fiáveis. No desenvolvimento desta metodologia, usaram-se dois softwares de simulação numérica para gerar os modelos digitais. Um deles dedica-se ao estudo reológico de peças termoplásticas e outro ao comportamento estrutural dos moldes de injeção. A execução de simulações numéricas requer uma boa caracterização dos materiais usados. No caso dos termoplásticos, os fabricantes têm uma grande base de dados com a informação necessária para as simulações numéricas. No entanto, para as simulações estruturais, os fabricantes tendem apenas a fornecer os dados das curvas monotónicas, os quais não fornecem qualquer informação sobre o comportamento à fadiga. Portanto, neste trabalho foram estudados modelos empíricos que se adaptam aos aços usados em moldes de injeção, a partir dos quais é possível gerar as curvas S-N e e-N. De modo a avaliar qual o modelo empírico que se adaptaria melhor a esta área, foram realizados ensaios experimentais com provetes feitos em EN 1.2311. A partir destes ensaios, escolheu-se o modelo empírico mais conservador. Com base no modelo empírico escolhido, foi desenvolvida uma aplicação capaz de gerar as curvas S-N e e-N, a partir das informações fornecidas pela aciaria. Além da caracterização dos materiais, também é importante que as condições de carregamento do modelo numérico estrutural sejam o mais aproximadas possível do que irá ocorrer no modelo físico. Como as cargas deste modelo numérico podem ser previstas a partir do modelo numérico reológico, a criação de uma ponte entre estes dois modelos numéricos é imprescindível. Logo, neste trabalho foi construída uma aplicação capaz de converter os dados gerados pelo software comercial Moldflow em ficheiros capazes de serem lidos por softwares comerciais de simulação numérica estrutural. Usando esta aplicação para a conversão dos dados, foram realizadas simulações e comparadas com os respetivos modelos físicos. Verificou-se que é possível replicar o comportamento do molde em modelos digitais. No entanto, os modelos digitais dos moldes de injeção estudados tenderam a apresentar resultados conservadores quando comparados com os modelos físicos. Por fim, foi desenvolvida uma aplicação capaz de usar dados calculados a partir de softwares comerciais de cálculo numérico estrutural para a determinação da resistência dos moldes à fadiga. Aqui foi tido em conta o modelo para geração das curvas de fadiga dos materiais validado. Os modelos de cálculo à fadiga na aplicação baseiam-se na regra de Palmgren – Miner para a determinação dos ciclos até à nucleação da fissura. O cálculo das tensões alternadas foi realizado a partir de dois métodos, o critério da tensão de corte octaédrica e o método de Sines. Para testar a aplicação foram escolhidos cinco moldes que apresentaram falhas por fadiga. Em seguida, foi aplicada a metodologia proposta neste trabalho para a determinação da resistência dos mesmos à fadiga. A partir da aplicação desta metodologia e das ferramentas desenvolvidas para o seu emprego, foi possível verificar que esta é capaz de prever as zonas onde ocorreram as falhas, bem como outras com probabilidade de nucleação de fissuras. Portanto, no decorrer deste trabalho foi possível criar uma metodologia e ferramentas de apoio para o cálculo de moldes à fadiga. Assim, projetistas de moldes podem ter uma boa perspetiva da resistência à fadiga de moldes de injeção ainda em projeto, tendo por base métodos científicos.The objective of this work is to create a methodology to analyze the fatigue resistance of thermoplastic injection molds. A methodology capable of satisfying the current market that demands a decrease in the delivery time and costs of injection molds, without compromising their reliability. To develop this methodology, digital models were used. With these models it is possible to execute several iterations without the costs of a physical model. Besides the lower cost of digital models, it is also possible to understand the behavior of each mold during the design phase. With the increasing complexity of injected components, the study of fatigue resistance tends to be more and more important. In this work, care will be presented in the preparation of the digital models, in order to obtain reliable results. In the development of this methodology, two numerical simulation software’s were used to generate the digital models. One of them is dedicated to the rheological study of thermoplastic parts and the other to the structural behavior of injection molds. The execution of numerical simulations requires a good characterization of the materials used. In the case of thermoplastics, manufacturers have a large database with the information needed for numerical simulations. However, for structural simulations, manufacturers tend to provide only monotonic curve data, which do not provide any information about fatigue behavior. Therefore, in this work, empirical models that fit the steels used in injection molds were studied, from which it is possible to generate the S-N and e-N curves. In order to evaluate which empirical model would best fit this area, experimental tests were performed with specimens made in EN 1.2311. From these tests, the most conservative empirical model was chosen. Based on the chosen empirical model, an application capable of generating the S-N and e-N curves from the information provided by the steel mill was developed. Besides the characterization of the materials, it is also important that the loading conditions of the numerical structural model are as close as possible to what will occur in the physical model. Since the loads of this numerical model can be predicted from the rheological numerical model, the creation of a bridge between these two numerical models is essential. Therefore, in this work was built an application capable of converting the data generated by the commercial software Moldflow into files capable of being read by commercial structural numerical simulation software. Using this application for data conversion, simulations were performed and compared with the respective physical models. It was found that it is possible to replicate the mold behavior in digital models. However, the digital models of the injection molds studied tended to present conservative results when compared to the physical models. Finally, an application capable of using data calculated from commercial numerical structural calculation software was developed for determining the fatigue resistance of molds. Here the validated model for generating the fatigue curves of the materials was taken into account. The fatigue calculation models in the application are based on the Palmgren - Miner rule for the determination of the cycles until crack nucleation. The alternating stresses calculation was performed from two methods, the octahedral shear stress criterion and the Sines method. To test the application, five molds that presented fatigue failures were chosen. Then, the methodology proposed in this work was applied to determine their fatigue resistance. From the application of this methodology and the tools developed for its use, it was possible to verify that it is able to predict the areas where the failures occurred, as well as others with a probability of crack nucleation. Therefore, during this work it was possible to create a methodology and support tools for the calculation of fatigue molds. Thus, mold designers can have a good perspective of the fatigue resistance of injection molds still in project, based on scientific methods

    Sandurot festival as \u3ci\u3emugna\u3c/i\u3e : exploring modernity and belonging through the civic festival

    Focusing on the Sandurot Festival organized by the City of Dumaguete in the Philippines, my study explores the process of embodying local identity as site to actualize modernity. To highlight this collaborative, creative, and often contentious process, I put forward the concept of mugna (a Cebuano word which means to create) to examine how social actors (such as festival organizers, cultural workers, and artists) configure nodes of belonging to the time and space of the city by engaging with notions of tradition, authenticity, progress, and development. As Cultural Studies stresses the significance of radical contextuality, I examine in this project the problem-spaces of modernity and belonging to investigate how they constitute the conjuncture wherein the performance practice of the civic festival emerges as mugna. In this light, I adapt Diana Taylor’s performance paradigm to approach the festival as a scenario in interrogating how and why local identity is performed. With this approach, I historicize the festival by examining its situatedness within nation-building and city-making policies and institutional directions (discussed mainly in Chapters One and Two). I further probe its embodied practice by analyzing the repeated but reconfigured corporeal forms and exploring the involvement of social actors in the corporeal practices of festivity (examined closely in Chapters Three, Four, and Five). Borrowing from the insights of performance studies and critical ethnography, I aim to show that through this process of mugna, the festival unfolds in a scenario of rediscovery where social actors playfully embody and reinvent the ‘folk’ and the past through networks of creative collaboration to transmit knowledge about Dumaguete. Thus, the festival as mugna, is produced by and produces attachment to the locality through various social actors’ embodiment of their ‘modern desire’ for the city life, in the process that invokes their local identity and associated civic claims to urban space. I conclude that the festival as mugna enhances our understanding on the configurations of modernity, with how social actors fulfill their individual and collective aspirations for the city and their practices of belonging in it, by determining how the city is remembered, lived, and aspired through the Sandurot Festival

    Unified System on Chip RESTAPI Service (USOCRS)

    Abstract. This thesis investigates the development of a Unified System on Chip RESTAPI Service (USOCRS) to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of SOC verification reporting. The research aims to overcome the challenges associated with the transfer, utilization, and interpretation of SoC verification reports by creating a unified platform that integrates various tools and technologies. The research methodology used in this study follows a design science approach. A thorough literature review was conducted to explore existing approaches and technologies related to SOC verification reporting, automation, data visualization, and API development. The review revealed gaps in the current state of the field, providing a basis for further investigation. Using the insights gained from the literature review, a system design and implementation plan were developed. This plan makes use of cutting-edge technologies such as FASTAPI, SQL and NoSQL databases, Azure Active Directory for authentication, and Cloud services. The Verification Toolbox was employed to validate SoC reports based on the organization’s standards. The system went through manual testing, and user satisfaction was evaluated to ensure its functionality and usability. The results of this study demonstrate the successful design and implementation of the USOCRS, offering SOC engineers a unified and secure platform for uploading, validating, storing, and retrieving verification reports. The USOCRS facilitates seamless communication between users and the API, granting easy access to vital information including successes, failures, and test coverage derived from submitted SoC verification reports. By automating and standardizing the SOC verification reporting process, the USOCRS eliminates manual and repetitive tasks usually done by developers, thereby enhancing productivity, and establishing a robust and reliable framework for report storage and retrieval. Through the integration of diverse tools and technologies, the USOCRS presents a comprehensive solution that adheres to the required specifications of the SOC schema used within the organization. Furthermore, the USOCRS significantly improves the efficiency and effectiveness of SOC verification reporting. It facilitates the submission process, reduces latency through optimized data storage, and enables meaningful extraction and analysis of report data

    We can no longer interpret the contemporary metropolis as we did in the last century. The thought of civil economy regarding the contemporary Metropolis conflicts more or less radically with the merely acquisitive dimension of the behaviour of its citizens. What is needed is therefore a new capacity for imagining the economic-productive future of the city: hybrid social enterprises, economically sustainable, structured and capable of using technologies, could be a solution for producing value and distributing it fairly and inclusively. Metropolitan Urbanity is another issue to establish. Metropolis needs new spaces where inclusion can occur, and where a repository of the imagery can be recreated. What is the ontology behind the technique of metropolitan planning and management, its vision and its symbols? Competitiveness, speed, and meritocracy are political words, not technical ones. Metropolitan Urbanity is the characteristic of a polis that expresses itself in its public places. Today, however, public places are private ones that are destined for public use. The Common Good has always had a space of representation in the city, which was the public space. Today, the Green-Grey Infrastructure is the metropolitan city's monument that communicates a value for future generations and must therefore be recognised and imagined; it is the production of the metropolitan symbolic imagery, the new magic of the city

    Quantifying non-exhaust emissions and the impact of hybrid and electric vehicles using combined measurement and modelling approaches

    Road traffic is a significant emission source of urban particulate matter (PM). Due to the implementation of exhaust regulatory standards in the UK, PM emissions which arise from the wear of brakes, tyres and the road surface, together with the resuspension of road dust are now predicted to exceed tailpipe emissions. While a growing body of academic literature has developed in recent years, non-exhaust emissions (NEE) remain unregulated and largely understudied, and the impact of powertrain electrification on the vehicle fleet has not been quantified. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to improve our understanding of these important emission sources and to determine the impact of NEE on urban air pollution - both now, and in the future. A series of highly time-resolved atmospheric measurement campaigns has been undertaken at roadside and background locations to determine roadside traffic increments. These measurements provide a comprehensive dataset of traffic emissions in London, Birmingham and Manchester, incorporating locations with different vehicle mix and speed, during summer and winter periods. PM mass and elemental tracers have been used to estimate the contribution of NEE concentrations using a scaling factor approach. A novel CO2 dilution approach has been undertaken to determine average fleet emission factors (EFs), whilst the impact of electric vehicle regenerative braking has also been simulated. The results indicate that NEE concentrations and EFs are highly dependent upon meteorological conditions, traffic speed, traffic volume and vehicle class. Brake wear is the dominant source of road traffic PM emissions in congested environments, whilst for each emission source, heavy duty vehicles (HDVs) contribute an order of magnitude greater than light duty vehicles (LDVs). On the other hand, despite the predicted increase in mass, the regenerative braking simulations suggest that passenger vehicles under electric powertrains will reduce brake wear emissions by 65 – 95%. This reduction depends on the assessed drive cycle and vehicle class, highlighting the importance of driving style on future brake wear emissions. The EFs developed in this thesis have been combined with traffic forecasts to project total national emissions in the UK up to 2035 – and can be used to validate the national atmospheric emission inventory. To conclude, a number of recommendations have been made with respect to air quality measurement strategies and emission policies which are needed to further our understanding of NEE, and to reduce these traffic-related emissions. It is proposed that a multi-disciplinary study should be undertaken encompassing laboratory dynamometer testing, on-vehicle measurements and environmental atmospheric measurements.Open Acces

    Knowledge-based Modelling of Additive Manufacturing for Sustainability Performance Analysis and Decision Making

    Additiivista valmistusta on pidetty käyttökelpoisena monimutkaisissa geometrioissa, topologisesti optimoiduissa kappaleissa ja kappaleissa joita on muuten vaikea valmistaa perinteisillä valmistusprosesseilla. Eduista huolimatta, yksi additiivisen valmistuksen vallitsevista haasteista on ollut heikko kyky tuottaa toimivia osia kilpailukykyisillä tuotantomäärillä perinteisen valmistuksen kanssa. Mallintaminen ja simulointi ovat tehokkaita työkaluja, jotka voivat auttaa lyhentämään suunnittelun, rakentamisen ja testauksen sykliä mahdollistamalla erilaisten tuotesuunnitelmien ja prosessiskenaarioiden nopean analyysin. Perinteisten ja edistyneiden valmistusteknologioiden mahdollisuudet ja rajoitukset määrittelevät kuitenkin rajat uusille tuotekehityksille. Siksi on tärkeää, että suunnittelijoilla on käytettävissään menetelmät ja työkalut, joiden avulla he voivat mallintaa ja simuloida tuotteen suorituskykyä ja siihen liittyvän valmistusprosessin suorituskykyä, toimivien korkea arvoisten tuotteiden toteuttamiseksi. Motivaation tämän väitöstutkimuksen tekemiselle on, meneillään oleva kehitystyö uudenlaisen korkean lämpötilan suprajohtavan (high temperature superconducting (HTS)) magneettikokoonpanon kehittämisessä, joka toimii kryogeenisissä lämpötiloissa. Sen monimutkaisuus edellyttää monitieteisen asiantuntemuksen lähentymistä suunnittelun ja prototyyppien valmistuksen aikana. Tutkimus hyödyntää tietopohjaista mallinnusta valmistusprosessin analysoinnin ja päätöksenteon apuna HTS-magneettien mekaanisten komponenttien suunnittelussa. Tämän lisäksi, tutkimus etsii mahdollisuuksia additiivisen valmistuksen toteutettavuuteen HTS-magneettikokoonpanon tuotannossa. Kehitetty lähestymistapa käyttää fysikaalisiin kokeisiin perustuvaa tuote-prosessi-integroitua mallinnusta tuottamaan kvantitatiivista ja laadullista tietoa, joka määrittelee prosessi-rakenne-ominaisuus-suorituskyky-vuorovaikutuksia tietyille materiaali-prosessi-yhdistelmille. Tuloksina saadut vuorovaikutukset integroidaan kaaviopohjaiseen malliin, joka voi auttaa suunnittelutilan tutkimisessa ja täten auttaa varhaisessa suunnittelu- ja valmistuspäätöksenteossa. Tätä varten testikomponentit valmistetaan käyttämällä kahta metallin additiivista valmistus prosessia: lankakaarihitsaus additiivista valmistusta (wire arc additive manufacturing) ja selektiivistä lasersulatusta (selective laser melting). Rakenteellisissa sovelluksissa yleisesti käytetyistä metalliseoksista (ruostumaton teräs, pehmeä teräs, luja niukkaseosteinen teräs, alumiini ja kupariseokset) testataan niiden mekaaniset, lämpö- ja sähköiset ominaisuudet. Lisäksi tehdään metalliseosten mikrorakenteen karakterisointi, jotta voidaan ymmärtää paremmin valmistusprosessin parametrien vaikutusta materiaalin ominaisuuksiin. Integroitu mallinnustapa yhdistää kerätyn kokeellisen tiedon, olemassa olevat analyyttiset ja empiiriset vuorovaikutus suhteet, sekä muut tietopohjaiset mallit (esim. elementtimallit, koneoppimismallit) päätöksenteon tukijärjestelmän muodossa, joka mahdollistaa optimaalisen materiaalin, valmistustekniikan, prosessiparametrien ja muitten ohjausmuuttujien valinnan, lopullisen 3d-tulosteun komponentin halutun rakenteen, ominaisuuksien ja suorituskyvyn saavuttamiseksi. Valmistuspäätöksenteko tapahtuu todennäköisyysmallin, eli Bayesin verkkomallin toteuttamisen kautta, joka on vankka, modulaarinen ja sovellettavissa muihin valmistusjärjestelmiin ja tuotesuunnitelmiin. Väitöstyössä esitetyn mallin kyky parantaa additiivisien valmistusprosessien suorituskykyä ja laatua, täten edistää kestävän tuotannon tavoitteita.Additive manufacturing (AM) has been considered viable for complex geometries, topology optimized parts, and parts that are otherwise difficult to produce using conventional manufacturing processes. Despite the advantages, one of the prevalent challenges in AM has been the poor capability of producing functional parts at production volumes that are competitive with traditional manufacturing. Modelling and simulation are powerful tools that can help shorten the design-build-test cycle by enabling rapid analysis of various product designs and process scenarios. Nevertheless, the capabilities and limitations of traditional and advanced manufacturing technologies do define the bounds for new product development. Thus, it is important that the designers have access to methods and tools that enable them to model and simulate product performance and associated manufacturing process performance to realize functional high value products. The motivation for this dissertation research stems from ongoing development of a novel high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet assembly, which operates in cryogenic environment. Its complexity requires the convergence of multidisciplinary expertise during design and prototyping. The research applies knowledge-based modelling to aid manufacturing process analysis and decision making in the design of mechanical components of the HTS magnet. Further, it explores the feasibility of using AM in the production of the HTS magnet assembly. The developed approach uses product-process integrated modelling based on physical experiments to generate quantitative and qualitative information that define process-structure-property-performance interactions for given material-process combinations. The resulting interactions are then integrated into a graph-based model that can aid in design space exploration to assist early design and manufacturing decision-making. To do so, test components are fabricated using two metal AM processes: wire and arc additive manufacturing and selective laser melting. Metal alloys (stainless steel, mild steel, high-strength low-alloyed steel, aluminium, and copper alloys) commonly used in structural applications are tested for their mechanical-, thermal-, and electrical properties. In addition, microstructural characterization of the alloys is performed to further understand the impact of manufacturing process parameters on material properties. The integrated modelling approach combines the collected experimental data, existing analytical and empirical relationships, and other data-driven models (e.g., finite element models, machine learning models) in the form of a decision support system that enables optimal selection of material, manufacturing technology, process parameters, and other control variables for attaining desired structure, property, and performance characteristics of the final printed component. The manufacturing decision making is performed through implementation of a probabilistic model i.e., a Bayesian network model, which is robust, modular, and can be adapted for other manufacturing systems and product designs. The ability of the model to improve throughput and quality of additive manufacturing processes will boost sustainable manufacturing goals

    Reproducible and relocatable regional ocean modelling: Fundamentals and practices

    In response to an increasing demand for bespoke or tailored regional ocean modelling configurations, we outline fundamental principles and practices that can expedite the process to generate new configurations. The paper develops the principle of Reproducibility and advocates adherence by presenting benefits to the community and user. The elements to this principle are reproducible workflows and standardised assessment, with additional effort over existing working practices being balanced against the added value generated. The paper then decomposes the complex build process, for a new regional ocean configuration, into stages and presents guidance, advice and insight on each component. This advice is compiled from across the user community, is presented in the context of NEMOv4, though aims to transcend NEMO version. Detail and region specific worked examples are linked in companion repositories and DOIs. The aim is to broaden the user community skill base, and to accelerate development of new configurations in order to increase available time exploiting the configurations

    The Viability and Potential Consequences of IoT-Based Ransomware

    With the increased threat of ransomware and the substantial growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) market, there is significant motivation for attackers to carry out IoT-based ransomware campaigns. In this thesis, the viability of such malware is tested. As part of this work, various techniques that could be used by ransomware developers to attack commercial IoT devices were explored. First, methods that attackers could use to communicate with the victim were examined, such that a ransom note was able to be reliably sent to a victim. Next, the viability of using "bricking" as a method of ransom was evaluated, such that devices could be remotely disabled unless the victim makes a payment to the attacker. Research was then performed to ascertain whether it was possible to remotely gain persistence on IoT devices, which would improve the efficacy of existing ransomware methods, and provide opportunities for more advanced ransomware to be created. Finally, after successfully identifying a number of persistence techniques, the viability of privacy-invasion based ransomware was analysed. For each assessed technique, proofs of concept were developed. A range of devices -- with various intended purposes, such as routers, cameras and phones -- were used to test the viability of these proofs of concept. To test communication hijacking, devices' "channels of communication" -- such as web services and embedded screens -- were identified, then hijacked to display custom ransom notes. During the analysis of bricking-based ransomware, a working proof of concept was created, which was then able to remotely brick five IoT devices. After analysing the storage design of an assortment of IoT devices, six different persistence techniques were identified, which were then successfully tested on four devices, such that malicious filesystem modifications would be retained after the device was rebooted. When researching privacy-invasion based ransomware, several methods were created to extract information from data sources that can be commonly found on IoT devices, such as nearby WiFi signals, images from cameras, or audio from microphones. These were successfully implemented in a test environment such that ransomable data could be extracted, processed, and stored for later use to blackmail the victim. Overall, IoT-based ransomware has not only been shown to be viable but also highly damaging to both IoT devices and their users. While the use of IoT-ransomware is still very uncommon "in the wild", the techniques demonstrated within this work highlight an urgent need to improve the security of IoT devices to avoid the risk of IoT-based ransomware causing havoc in our society. Finally, during the development of these proofs of concept, a number of potential countermeasures were identified, which can be used to limit the effectiveness of the attacking techniques discovered in this PhD research

    A Decision Support System for Economic Viability and Environmental Impact Assessment of Vertical Farms

    Vertical farming (VF) is the practice of growing crops or animals using the vertical dimension via multi-tier racks or vertically inclined surfaces. In this thesis, I focus on the emerging industry of plant-specific VF. Vertical plant farming (VPF) is a promising and relatively novel practice that can be conducted in buildings with environmental control and artificial lighting. However, the nascent sector has experienced challenges in economic viability, standardisation, and environmental sustainability. Practitioners and academics call for a comprehensive financial analysis of VPF, but efforts are stifled by a lack of valid and available data. A review of economic estimation and horticultural software identifies a need for a decision support system (DSS) that facilitates risk-empowered business planning for vertical farmers. This thesis proposes an open-source DSS framework to evaluate business sustainability through financial risk and environmental impact assessments. Data from the literature, alongside lessons learned from industry practitioners, would be centralised in the proposed DSS using imprecise data techniques. These techniques have been applied in engineering but are seldom used in financial forecasting. This could benefit complex sectors which only have scarce data to predict business viability. To begin the execution of the DSS framework, VPF practitioners were interviewed using a mixed-methods approach. Learnings from over 19 shuttered and operational VPF projects provide insights into the barriers inhibiting scalability and identifying risks to form a risk taxonomy. Labour was the most commonly reported top challenge. Therefore, research was conducted to explore lean principles to improve productivity. A probabilistic model representing a spectrum of variables and their associated uncertainty was built according to the DSS framework to evaluate the financial risk for VF projects. This enabled flexible computation without precise production or financial data to improve economic estimation accuracy. The model assessed two VPF cases (one in the UK and another in Japan), demonstrating the first risk and uncertainty quantification of VPF business models in the literature. The results highlighted measures to improve economic viability and the viability of the UK and Japan case. The environmental impact assessment model was developed, allowing VPF operators to evaluate their carbon footprint compared to traditional agriculture using life-cycle assessment. I explore strategies for net-zero carbon production through sensitivity analysis. Renewable energies, especially solar, geothermal, and tidal power, show promise for reducing the carbon emissions of indoor VPF. Results show that renewably-powered VPF can reduce carbon emissions compared to field-based agriculture when considering the land-use change. The drivers for DSS adoption have been researched, showing a pathway of compliance and design thinking to overcome the ‘problem of implementation’ and enable commercialisation. Further work is suggested to standardise VF equipment, collect benchmarking data, and characterise risks. This work will reduce risk and uncertainty and accelerate the sector’s emergence
