Extremal properties for dissections of convex 3-polytopes
A dissection of a convex d-polytope is a partition of the polytope into
d-simplices whose vertices are among the vertices of the polytope.
Triangulations are dissections that have the additional property that the set
of all its simplices forms a simplicial complex. The size of a dissection is
the number of d-simplices it contains. This paper compares triangulations of
maximal size with dissections of maximal size. We also exhibit lower and upper
bounds for the size of dissections of a 3-polytope and analyze extremal size
triangulations for specific non-simplicial polytopes: prisms, antiprisms,
Archimedean solids, and combinatorial d-cubes.Comment: 19 page
The Gromov Norm of the Product of Two Surfaces
We make an estimation of the value of the Gromov norm of the Cartesian
product of two surfaces. Our method uses a connection between these norms and
the minimal size of triangulations of the products of two polygons. This allows
us to prove that the Gromov norm of this product is between 32 and 52 when both
factors have genus 2. The case of arbitrary genera is easy to deduce form this

Construction and Analysis of Projected Deformed Products
We introduce a deformed product construction for simple polytopes in terms of
lower-triangular block matrix representations. We further show how Gale duality
can be employed for the construction and for the analysis of deformed products
such that specified faces (e.g. all the k-faces) are ``strictly preserved''
under projection. Thus, starting from an arbitrary neighborly simplicial
(d-2)-polytope Q on n-1 vertices we construct a deformed n-cube, whose
projection to the last dcoordinates yields a neighborly cubical d-polytope. As
an extension of thecubical case, we construct matrix representations of
deformed products of(even) polygons (DPPs), which have a projection to d-space
that retains the complete (\lfloor \tfrac{d}{2} \rfloor - 1)-skeleton. In both
cases the combinatorial structure of the images under projection is completely
determined by the neighborly polytope Q: Our analysis provides explicit
combinatorial descriptions. This yields a multitude of combinatorially
different neighborly cubical polytopes and DPPs. As a special case, we obtain
simplified descriptions of the neighborly cubical polytopes of Joswig & Ziegler
(2000) as well as of the ``projected deformed products of polygons'' that were
announced by Ziegler (2004), a family of 4-polytopes whose ``fatness'' gets

Expansive Motions and the Polytope of Pointed Pseudo-Triangulations
We introduce the polytope of pointed pseudo-triangulations of a point set in
the plane, defined as the polytope of infinitesimal expansive motions of the
points subject to certain constraints on the increase of their distances. Its
1-skeleton is the graph whose vertices are the pointed pseudo-triangulations of
the point set and whose edges are flips of interior pseudo-triangulation edges.
For points in convex position we obtain a new realization of the
associahedron, i.e., a geometric representation of the set of triangulations of
an n-gon, or of the set of binary trees on n vertices, or of many other
combinatorial objects that are counted by the Catalan numbers. By considering
the 1-dimensional version of the polytope of constrained expansive motions we
obtain a second distinct realization of the associahedron as a perturbation of
the positive cell in a Coxeter arrangement.
Our methods produce as a by-product a new proof that every simple polygon or
polygonal arc in the plane has expansive motions, a key step in the proofs of
the Carpenter's Rule Theorem by Connelly, Demaine and Rote (2000) and by

Random lattice triangulations: Structure and algorithms
The paper concerns lattice triangulations, that is, triangulations of the
integer points in a polygon in whose vertices are also integer
points. Lattice triangulations have been studied extensively both as geometric
objects in their own right and by virtue of applications in algebraic geometry.
Our focus is on random triangulations in which a triangulation has
weight , where is a positive real parameter, and
is the total length of the edges in . Empirically, this
model exhibits a "phase transition" at (corresponding to the
uniform distribution): for distant edges behave essentially
independently, while for very large regions of aligned edges
appear. We substantiate this picture as follows. For sufficiently
small, we show that correlations between edges decay exponentially with
distance (suitably defined), and also that the Glauber dynamics (a local Markov
chain based on flipping edges) is rapidly mixing (in time polynomial in the
number of edges in the triangulation). This dynamics has been proposed by
several authors as an algorithm for generating random triangulations. By
contrast, for we show that the mixing time is exponential. These
are apparently the first rigorous quantitative results on the structure and
