The result was circulated in several versions before the brainstorming and then modified according to the discussions held in Sevilla and according to the progresses made during the meeting.     Formal models of the extension activity of DNA polymerase enzymes

    The study of formal language operations inspired by enzymatic actions on DNA is part of ongoing efforts to provide a formal framework and rigorous treatment of DNA-based information and DNA-based computation. Other studies along these lines include theoretical explorations of splicing systems, insertion-deletion systems, substitution, hairpin extension, hairpin reduction, superposition, overlapping concatenation, conditional concatenation, contextual intra- and intermolecular recombinations, as well as template-guided recombination. First, a formal language operation is proposed and investigated, inspired by the naturally occurring phenomenon of DNA primer extension by a DNA-template-directed DNA polymerase enzyme. Given two DNA strings u and v, where the shorter string v (called the primer) is Watson-Crick complementary and can thus bind to a substring of the longer string u (called the template) the result of the primer extension is a DNA string that is complementary to a suffix of the template which starts at the binding position of the primer. The operation of DNA primer extension can be abstracted as a binary operation on two formal languages: a template language L1 and a primer language L2. This language operation is called L1-directed extension of L2 and the closure properties of various language classes, including the classes in the Chomsky hierarchy, are studied under directed extension. Furthermore, the question of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for a given language of target strings to be generated from a given template language when the primer language is unknown is answered. The canonic inverse of directed extension is used in order to obtain the optimal solution (the minimal primer language) to this question. The second research project investigates properties of the binary string and language operation overlap assembly as defined by Csuhaj-Varju, Petre and Vaszil as a formal model of the linear self-assembly of DNA strands: The overlap assembly of two strings, xy and yz, which share an overlap y, results in the string xyz. In this context, we investigate overlap assembly and its properties: closure properties of various language families under this operation, and related decision problems. A theoretical analysis of the possible use of iterated overlap assembly to generate combinatorial DNA libraries is also given. The third research project continues the exploration of the properties of the overlap assembly operation by investigating closure properties of various language classes under iterated overlap assembly, and the decidability of the completeness of a language. The problem of deciding whether a given string is terminal with respect to a language, and the problem of deciding if a given language can be generated by an overlap assembly operation of two other given languages are also investigated

    This study attempts to characterize vocoids, i.e. vowels and semivowels, as a unified class of segments. In order to do so, it investigates the main phenomena concerning the quantitative distribution of these sounds, namely syllabic alternation, length alternations, deletion and insertion. Such phenomena are best analyzed by making reference to prosodic structure, and syllable structure in particular. Therefore, both frameworks adopted in this thesis take into consideration this type of representation. The main approach, which I refer to generally as Derivational Theory (DT), is based on the notion that surface phonetic forms are derived from underlying forms through a series of structural changes taking place at different levels of representation. This model is contrasted with the recently introduced (Prince and Smolensky 1993) Optimality Theory (OT), an output-oriented paradigm based on the parallel evaluation of candidate forms by means of universal but violable constraints. This thesis shows that OT offers some valuable insights into the phenomena under analysis, although there are areas in which it requires integration with derivational tools. This study also makes specific reference to two languages: Ammani Arabic and Standard Italian. These diverge in their treatment of vocoids, but clear general trends may be detected which have also been found in other languages

    A Minimalist Approach to Clitics and Clitic Doubling in Spanish

    This dissertation addresses questions concerning cliticisation within the framework of the minimalist approach as presented, among others, by Chomsky (1995a). Chapter 1 presents the basic tenets underlying the minimalist approach. It also briefly discusses the historical developments within generative grammar which have led to the adoption of a minimalist approach. Chapter 2 presents general background on cliticisation and clitic doubling, including theories such as the Movement and Base generation theories which have been advanced to account for the behaviour of clitics. The theory of Clitic Voices presented by Sportiche (1992), a synthesis of previous analyses, is also presented and adopted as providing a more principled account of clitics in clitic-doubling constructions. In Chapter 3 the traditional classification of clitics in terms of their Case properties is abandoned in favour of a more fundamental one based on other features of clitics such as [± person] and [± number]. This characterisation leads to the postulation of a maximum of two clitic phrases for Spanish, each associated with different feature compositions. This feature system takes into account both phi-features and aspectual features of the predicate associated with the clitics. This proposal allows a unified analysis of a number of constructions, previously viewed as distinct, under the more general umbrella of clitic doubling. Chapter 4 provides an account of the alternation between enclisis and proclisis found in Spanish as well as other Romance languages. This alternation is explained by reference to the features present on the verbal host which trigger movement in cases of enclisis. In an extension of the analysis of the relation between a clitic and its host, an account of interpolation in Old Spanish is also discussed. Chapter 5 discusses the restrictions apparent in instances of clitic doubling with respect to the features of the doubling element, e.g. [± pronominal], [± human], and [± specific]. A parallel is drawn between these restrictions and similar patterns found in ergative languages. Finally, Chapter 6 shows how the conclusions reached in this thesis can be seen to apply to broader concerns of language acquisition and language impairment

    This volume collects novel contributions to comparative generative linguistics that “rethink” existing approaches to an extensive range of phenomena, domains, and architectural questions in linguistic theory. At the heart of the contributions is the tension between descriptive and explanatory adequacy which has long animated generative linguistics and which continues to grow thanks to the increasing amount and diversity of data available to us. The chapters address research questions on the relation of syntax to other aspects of grammar and linguistics more generally, including studies on language acquisition, variation and change, and syntactic interfaces. Many of these contributions show the influence of research by Ian Roberts and collaborators and give the reader a sense of the lively nature of current discussion of topics in synchronic and diachronic comparative syntax ranging from the core verbal domain to higher, propositional domains

    Fostering Distributed Business Logic in Open Collaborative Networks: an integrated approach based on semantic and swarm coordination

    Given the great opportunities provided by Open Collaborative Networks (OCNs), their success depends on the effective integration of composite business logic at all stages. However, a dilemma between cooperation and competition is often found in environments where the access to business knowledge can provide absolute advantages over the competition. Indeed, although it is apparent that business logic should be automated for an effective integration, chain participants at all segments are often highly protective of their own knowledge. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem by outlining a novel approach with a supporting architectural view. In our approach, business rules are modeled via semantic web and their execution is coordinated by a workflow model. Each company’s rule can be kept as private, and the business rules can be combined together to achieve goals with defined interdependencies and responsibilities in the workflow. The use of a workflow model allows assembling business facts together while protecting data source. We propose a privacy-preserving perturbation technique which is based on digital stigmergy. Stigmergy is a processing schema based on the principle of self-aggregation of marks produced by data. Stigmergy allows protecting data privacy, because only marks are involved in aggregation, in place of actual data values, without explicit data modeling. This paper discusses the proposed approach and examines its characteristics through actual scenarios
