Performance bounds for optimal feedback control in networks
Many important complex networks, including critical infrastructure and
emerging industrial automation systems, are becoming increasingly intricate
webs of interacting feedback control loops. A fundamental concern is to
quantify the control properties and performance limitations of the network as a
function of its dynamical structure and control architecture. We study
performance bounds for networks in terms of optimal feedback control costs. We
provide a set of complementary bounds as a function of the system dynamics and
actuator structure. For unstable network dynamics, we characterize a tradeoff
between feedback control performance and the number of control inputs, in
particular showing that optimal cost can increase exponentially with the size
of the network. We also derive a bound on the performance of the worst-case
actuator subset for stable networks, providing insight into dynamics properties
that affect the potential efficacy of actuator selection. We illustrate our
results with numerical experiments that analyze performance in regular and
random networks
Symptoms of complexity in a tourism system
Tourism destinations behave as dynamic evolving complex systems, encompassing
numerous factors and activities which are interdependent and whose
relationships might be highly nonlinear. Traditional research in this field has
looked after a linear approach: variables and relationships are monitored in
order to forecast future outcomes with simplified models and to derive
implications for management organisations. The limitations of this approach
have become apparent in many cases, and several authors claim for a new and
different attitude.
While complex systems ideas are amongst the most promising interdisciplinary
research themes emerged in the last few decades, very little has been done so
far in the field of tourism. This paper presents a brief overview of the
complexity framework as a means to understand structures, characteristics,
relationships, and explores the implications and contributions of the
complexity literature on tourism systems. The objective is to allow the reader

Complex Dynamics of Autonomous Communication Networks and the Intelligent Communication Paradigm
Dynamics of arbitrary communication system is analysed as unreduced interaction process. The applied generalised, universally nonperturbative method of effective potential reveals the phenomenon of dynamic multivaluedness of competing system configurations forced to permanently replace each other in a causally random order, which leads to universally defined dynamical chaos, complexity, fractality, self-organisation, and adaptability. We demonstrate the origin of huge, exponentially high efficiency of the unreduced, complex network dynamics and specify the universal symmetry of complexity as the fundamental guiding principle for creation and control of such qualitatively new kind of networks and devices. Complexity without chaos: Plasticity within random recurrent networks generates robust timing and motor control
It is widely accepted that the complex dynamics characteristic of recurrent
neural circuits contributes in a fundamental manner to brain function. Progress
has been slow in understanding and exploiting the computational power of
recurrent dynamics for two main reasons: nonlinear recurrent networks often
exhibit chaotic behavior and most known learning rules do not work in robust
fashion in recurrent networks. Here we address both these problems by
demonstrating how random recurrent networks (RRN) that initially exhibit
chaotic dynamics can be tuned through a supervised learning rule to generate
locally stable neural patterns of activity that are both complex and robust to
noise. The outcome is a novel neural network regime that exhibits both
transiently stable and chaotic trajectories. We further show that the recurrent
learning rule dramatically increases the ability of RRNs to generate complex
spatiotemporal motor patterns, and accounts for recent experimental data
showing a decrease in neural variability in response to stimulus onset
Mixed-signal CNN array chips for image processing
Due to their local connectivity and wide functional capabilities, cellular nonlinear networks (CNN) are excellent candidates for the implementation of image processing algorithms using VLSI analog parallel arrays. However, the design of general purpose, programmable CNN chips with dimensions required for practical applications raises many challenging problems to analog designers. This is basically due to the fact that large silicon area means large development cost, large spatial deviations of design parameters and low production yield. CNN designers must face different issues to keep reasonable enough accuracy level and production yield together with reasonably low development cost in their design of large CNN chips. Coherence in Large-Scale Networks: Dimension-Dependent Limitations of Local Feedback
We consider distributed consensus and vehicular formation control problems.
Specifically we address the question of whether local feedback is sufficient to
maintain coherence in large-scale networks subject to stochastic disturbances.
We define macroscopic performance measures which are global quantities that
capture the notion of coherence; a notion of global order that quantifies how
closely the formation resembles a solid object. We consider how these measures
scale asymptotically with network size in the topologies of regular lattices in
1, 2 and higher dimensions, with vehicular platoons corresponding to the 1
dimensional case. A common phenomenon appears where a higher spatial dimension
implies a more favorable scaling of coherence measures, with a dimensions of 3
being necessary to achieve coherence in consensus and vehicular formations
under certain conditions. In particular, we show that it is impossible to have
large coherent one dimensional vehicular platoons with only local feedback. We
analyze these effects in terms of the underlying energetic modes of motion,
showing that they take the form of large temporal and spatial scales resulting
in an accordion-like motion of formations. A conclusion can be drawn that in
low spatial dimensions, local feedback is unable to regulate large-scale
disturbances, but it can in higher spatial dimensions. This phenomenon is
distinct from, and unrelated to string instability issues which are commonly
