Bounds on Contention Management in Radio Networks
The local broadcast problem assumes that processes in a wireless network are
provided messages, one by one, that must be delivered to their neighbors. In
this paper, we prove tight bounds for this problem in two well-studied wireless
network models: the classical model, in which links are reliable and collisions
consistent, and the more recent dual graph model, which introduces unreliable
edges. Our results prove that the Decay strategy, commonly used for local
broadcast in the classical setting, is optimal. They also establish a
separation between the two models, proving that the dual graph setting is
strictly harder than the classical setting, with respect to this primitive
Secure Two-Way Transmission via Wireless-Powered Untrusted Relay and External Jammer
In this paper, we propose a two-way secure communication scheme where two
transceivers exchange confidential messages via a wireless powered untrusted
amplify-and-forward (AF) relay in the presence of an external jammer. We take
into account both friendly jamming (FJ) and Gaussian noise jamming (GNJ)
scenarios. Based on the time switching (TS) architecture at the relay, the data
transmission is done in three phases. In the first phase, both the
energy-starved nodes, the untrustworthy relay and the jammer, are charged by
non-information radio frequency (RF) signals from the sources. In the second
phase, the two sources send their information signals and concurrently, the
jammer transmits artificial noise to confuse the curious relay. Finally, the
third phase is dedicated to forward a scaled version of the received signal
from the relay to the sources. For the proposed secure transmission schemes, we
derive new closed-form lower-bound expressions for the ergodic secrecy sum rate
(ESSR) in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. We further analyze the
asymptotic ESSR to determine the key parameters; the high SNR slope and the
high SNR power offset of the jamming based scenarios. To highlight the
performance advantage of the proposed FJ, we also examine the scenario of
without jamming (WoJ). Finally, numerical examples and discussions are provided
to acquire some engineering insights, and to demonstrate the impacts of
different system parameters on the secrecy performance of the considered
communication scenarios. The numerical results illustrate that the proposed FJ
significantly outperforms the traditional one-way communication and the
Constellation rotation approach, as well as our proposed benchmarks, the
two-way WoJ and GNJ scenarios.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Vehicular

On the Performance of Millimeter Wave-based RF-FSO Multi-hop and Mesh Networks
This paper studies the performance of multi-hop and mesh networks composed of
millimeter wave (MMW)-based radio frequency (RF) and free-space optical (FSO)
links. The results are obtained in cases with and without hybrid automatic
repeat request (HARQ). Taking the MMW characteristics of the RF links into
account, we derive closed-form expressions for the networks' outage probability
and ergodic achievable rates. We also evaluate the effect of various parameters
such as power amplifiers efficiency, number of antennas as well as different
coherence times of the RF and the FSO links on the system performance. Finally,
we determine the minimum number of the transmit antennas in the RF link such
that the same rate is supported in the RF- and the FSO-based hops. The results
show the efficiency of the RF-FSO setups in different conditions. Moreover,
HARQ can effectively improve the outage probability/energy efficiency, and
compensate for the effect of hardware impairments in RF-FSO networks. For
common parameter settings of the RF-FSO dual-hop networks, outage probability
of 10^{-4} and code rate of 3 nats-per-channel-use, the implementation of HARQ
with a maximum of 2 and 3 retransmissions reduces the required power, compared
to cases with open-loop communication, by 13 and 17 dB, respectively.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
