    A passive available bandwidth estimation methodology

    The Available Bandwidth (AB) of an end-to-end path is its remaining capacity and it is an important metric for several applications such as overlay routing and P2P networking. That is why many AB estimation tools have been published recently. Most of these tools use the Probe Rate Model, which requires sending packet trains at a rate matching the AB. Its main issue is that it congests the path under measurement. We present a different approach: a novel passive methodology to estimate the AB that does not introduce probe traffic. Our methodology, intended to be applied between two separate nodes, estimates the path’s AB by analyzing specific parameters of the traffic exchanged. The main challenge is that we cannot rely on any given rate of this traffic. Therefore we rely on a different model, the Utilization Model. In this paper we present our passive methodology and a tool (PKBest) based on it. We evaluate its applicability and accuracy using public NLANR data traces. Our results -more than 300Gb- show that our tool is more accurate than pathChirp, a state-of-the-art active PRM-based tool.     eChirp: Measuring Available Bandwidth for the Internet Using Multiple Chirp Packet Trains

    Measuring available bandwidth over a network path in the Internet is a challenging research problem. In this thesis we have studied this problem and developed a new technique called "eChirp". First, the effectiveness of pathChirp [1] is studied in terms of model performance of chirp packet train structure, actual bandwidth, queuing delay and excursion segmentation. Then we remodeled the chirp train structure. The eChirp can measure the available bandwidth over a network path efficiently and accurately with heavy and light load links. To measure the available bandwidth, the packet probing rate configuration used in pathChirp technique is modified by changing its chirp train structure. The modified structure uses multiple chirp trains (three trains) that provides better probing rate configuration and ultimately gives better bandwidth measurement. Per-packet available bandwidth is calculated using weighted average of per-packet bandwidth of three trains. We also determined the bounds of probing rate parameter which was questionable in pathChirp and affects the available bandwidth measurement accuracy. The eChirp technique has been experimented with numerous network path topologies with low and high link loads with CBR cross-traffic conditions using NS-2 simulated network and results are compared with most recent pathChirp technique.     A Survey on Delay-Aware Resource Control for Wireless Systems --- Large Deviation Theory, Stochastic Lyapunov Drift and Distributed Stochastic Learning

    In this tutorial paper, a comprehensive survey is given on several major systematic approaches in dealing with delay-aware control problems, namely the equivalent rate constraint approach, the Lyapunov stability drift approach and the approximate Markov Decision Process (MDP) approach using stochastic learning. These approaches essentially embrace most of the existing literature regarding delay-aware resource control in wireless systems. They have their relative pros and cons in terms of performance, complexity and implementation issues. For each of the approaches, the problem setup, the general solution and the design methodology are discussed. Applications of these approaches to delay-aware resource allocation are illustrated with examples in single-hop wireless networks. Furthermore, recent results regarding delay-aware multi-hop routing designs in general multi-hop networks are elaborated. The research paper represented here presents a splendid method for estimating or measuring Bandwidth in 1D468;1D485;1D489;1D490;1D484; network whose character is decentralized in nature. Contrasting in the centralized formation, the bandwidth estimating in 1D468;1D485;1D489;1D490;1D484; is significant and this eventually makes an influence over the 1D478;1D490;1D47A; of the network communication. The admission control and dynamic bandwidth management method which is presented here, facilitates it with fairness and rate guarantees despite the distributed link layer fair scheduling being absent. Alteration has been made over 1D474;1D468;1D46A; layer and this method is appropriate where the peer-to-peer (1D477;1D7D0;1D477;) multimedia transmissions rates are amended in compliantly fashion.In the research work presented here the architecture of the 1D474;1D468;1D46A; layer has been altered and the data handling capacity has been increased. This technique is adopted to facilitate higher data rate transmission and eliminate congestion over the considerednetwork. The proposed technique implements the splitting of 1D474;1D468;1D46A; into two sub layer where one will be responsible for control data transmission while other effectively transmits the data bits. Thus it results into higher data rate transmission with better accuracy and optimized network throughput.     PoissonProb: A new rate-based available bandwidth measurement algorithm.

    Accurate available bandwidth measurement is important for network protocols and distributed programs design, traffic optimization, capacity planning, and service verification. Research on measuring available bandwidth falls into two basic classes: the network traffic modeling algorithms and the self-induced algorithms. The self-induced algorithms are based on packet dispersion techniques. The currently available bandwidth measurement algorithms face the problems of distortion of measurement on multi-hop paths, system resource limitations, probe traffic intrusiveness and measurement accuracy. We have developed a new rate-based self-induced algorithm---PoissonProb. The intervals between probe packets of this algorithm are in Poisson distribution format and the algorithm infers the available bandwidth according to the average of probe packets rate. The algorithm has been implemented as the PoissonProb Available Bandwidth (PAB) measurement tool. The PAB tool can be operated in either sender-based or receiver-based mode.
