Distributed storage manager system for synchronized and scalable AV services across networks

The distributed storage manager provides an enhancement to the MHP storage management functionality acting as a value added middleware distributed across the network. The distributed storage manager system provides multiple protocol support for initializing and downloading both streamed and file-based content and provides optimum control mechanisms to organize the storing and retrieval of content that are remained accessible to other multiple heterogeneous devices
Converged digital TV services: the role of middleware and future directions of interactive television
The subject of the future of the interactive Television medium has become a topic of great interest to the academic and industrial communities particularly since in the recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the pace of innovation of convergence of digital TV systems and services. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of what we know as digital TV converged services, to present and categorise the digital Television middleware technologies that contributed to it, and to present possible future trends and directions. A new Television era of converged wireless and mobile content delivery, user-authored content, multimodal interaction, intelligent personalisation, smart space awareness, and 3D content sensations is foreseen, creating ambient and immersive experiences
Rapid prototyping and fast user trial of multimedia broadcast and cellular services
This paper presents the results of fast user trial of multimedia services that are enabled when a mobile terminal has access to converged services over digital broadcast and mobile telecommunications networks. It first describes the motivations behind developing this system and describes the service scenarios that benefit most from it. It then provides an overview of the service components of the test case scenario. Finally, it presents the results of fast user trials on end users of the services that were developed. This work was conducted as part of the EU-funded CISMUNDUS project

Cooperating broadcast and cellular conditional access system for digital television
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The lack of interoperability between PayâTV service providers and a horizontally integrated business transaction model have compromised the competition in the PayâTV market. In addition, the lack of interactivity with customers has resulted in high churn rate and improper security measures have contributed into considerable business loss. These issues are the main cause of high operational costs and subscription fees in the PayâTV systems.
This paper presents a novel endâtoâend system architecture for PayâTV systems cooperating mobile and broadcasting technologies. It provides a costâeffective, scalable, dynamic and secure access control mechanism supporting converged services and new business opportunities in PayâTV systems. It enhances interactivity, security and potentially reduces customer attrition and operational cost. In this platform, service providers can effectively interact with their customers, personalise their services and adopt appropriate security measures. It breaks up the rigid relationship between a viewer and setâtop box as imposed by traditional conditional access systems, thus, a viewer can fully enjoy his entitlements via an arbitrary setâtop box.
Having thoroughly considered stateâofâtheâart technologies currently being used across the world, the thesis highlights novel use cases and presents the full design and implementation aspects of the system. The design section is enriched by providing possible security structures supported thereby. A business collaboration structure is proposed, followed by a reference model for implementing the system. Finally, the security architectures are analysed to propose the best architecture on the basis of security, complexity and setâtop box production cost criteria
The VITI program: Final Report
In this report we present our findings and results from the
VITI program in 2000. The focus of the research work undertaken by
VITI has been to provide electronic meeting environments that are easy
to use and afford as natural a collaboration experience as
possible. This final report is structured into three parts. Part one
concerns the VITI infrastructure and consists of two sections. The
first section describes the process of establishing the
infrastructure, concentrating on how the work was done. The second
section presents the actual infrastructure that is in place today,
concentrating on what has been put in place. Part two examines the use
the VITI infrastructure has been put to, giving examples of activities
it has supported and discussing strengths and weaknesses that have
emerged through this use. Finally part three considers the future of
distributed electronic meeting environments. It is recommended that
the report be read in the order in which it is presented. However,
each section has been written as a standalone document and can be read
independently of the others
Co-opetition of TV broadcasters in online video markets : a winning strategy?
This article focuses on TV broadcasters adopting co-opetition strategies for launching online video services. It is claimed that the emergence of online video platforms like YouTube and Netflix is driving TV broadcasters to collaborate with their closest competitors to reduce costs and reach the necessary scale in the global marketplace. The article sheds light on online video platforms that were developed following a co-opetition strategy (Hulu and YouView). The establishment of joint ventures in online video, however, has been scrutinised by competition authorities which fear that collaboration between close competitors lessens rivalry and reduces consumer choice. Therefore, several co-opetition projects (among others BBCâs Kangaroo and Germanyâs Gold) have been prohibited by competition authorities
