    Automatic generation of hardware/software interfaces

    Enabling new applications for mobile devices often requires the use of specialized hardware to reduce power consumption. Because of time-to-market pressure, current design methodologies for embedded applications require an early partitioning of the design, allowing the hardware and software to be developed simultaneously, each adhering to a rigid interface contract. This approach is problematic for two reasons: (1) a detailed hardware-software interface is difficult to specify until one is deep into the design process, and (2) it prevents the later migration of functionality across the interface motivated by efficiency concerns or the addition of features. We address this problem using the Bluespec Codesign Language~(BCL) which permits the designer to specify the hardware-software partition in the source code, allowing the compiler to synthesize efficient software and hardware along with transactors for communication between the partitions. The movement of functionality across the hardware-software boundary is accomplished by simply specifying a new partitioning, and since the compiler automatically generates the desired interface specifications, it eliminates yet another error-prone design task.     A model-based approach for the specification and refinement of streaming applications

    Embedded systems can be found in a wide range of applications. Depending on the application, embedded systems must meet a wide range of constraints. Thus, designing and programming embedded systems is a challenging task. Here, model-based design flows can be a solution. This thesis proposes novel approaches for the specification and refinement of streaming applications. To this end, it focuses on dataflow models. As key result, the proposed dataflow model provides for a seamless model-based design flow from system level to the instruction/logic level for a wide range of streaming applications

    Decompose and Conquer: Addressing Evasive Errors in Systems on Chip

    Modern computer chips comprise many components, including microprocessor cores, memory modules, on-chip networks, and accelerators. Such system-on-chip (SoC) designs are deployed in a variety of computing devices: from internet-of-things, to smartphones, to personal computers, to data centers. In this dissertation, we discuss evasive errors in SoC designs and how these errors can be addressed efficiently. In particular, we focus on two types of errors: design bugs and permanent faults. Design bugs originate from the limited amount of time allowed for design verification and validation. Thus, they are often found in functional features that are rarely activated. Complete functional verification, which can eliminate design bugs, is extremely time-consuming, thus impractical in modern complex SoC designs. Permanent faults are caused by failures of fragile transistors in nano-scale semiconductor manufacturing processes. Indeed, weak transistors may wear out unexpectedly within the lifespan of the design. Hardware structures that reduce the occurrence of permanent faults incur significant silicon area or performance overheads, thus they are infeasible for most cost-sensitive SoC designs. To tackle and overcome these evasive errors efficiently, we propose to leverage the principle of decomposition to lower the complexity of the software analysis or the hardware structures involved. To this end, we present several decomposition techniques, specific to major SoC components. We first focus on microprocessor cores, by presenting a lightweight bug-masking analysis that decomposes a program into individual instructions to identify if a design bug would be masked by the program's execution. We then move to memory subsystems: there, we offer an efficient memory consistency testing framework to detect buggy memory-ordering behaviors, which decomposes the memory-ordering graph into small components based on incremental differences. We also propose a microarchitectural patching solution for memory subsystem bugs, which augments each core node with a small distributed programmable logic, instead of including a global patching module. In the context of on-chip networks, we propose two routing reconfiguration algorithms that bypass faulty network resources. The first computes short-term routes in a distributed fashion, localized to the fault region. The second decomposes application-aware routing computation into simple routing rules so to quickly find deadlock-free, application-optimized routes in a fault-ridden network. Finally, we consider general accelerator modules in SoC designs. When a system includes many accelerators, there are a variety of interactions among them that must be verified to catch buggy interactions. To this end, we decompose such inter-module communication into basic interaction elements, which can be reassembled into new, interesting tests. Overall, we show that the decomposition of complex software algorithms and hardware structures can significantly reduce overheads: up to three orders of magnitude in the bug-masking analysis and the application-aware routing, approximately 50 times in the routing reconfiguration latency, and 5 times on average in the memory-ordering graph checking. These overhead reductions come with losses in error coverage: 23% undetected bug-masking incidents, 39% non-patchable memory bugs, and occasionally we overlook rare patterns of multiple faults.     High-level services for networks-on-chip

    Future technology trends envision that next-generation Multiprocessors Systems-on- Chip (MPSoCs) will be composed of a combination of a large number of processing and storage elements interconnected by complex communication architectures. Communication and interconnection between these basic blocks play a role of crucial importance when the number of these elements increases. Enabling reliable communication channels between cores becomes therefore a challenge for system designers. Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) appeared as a strategy for connecting and managing the communication between several design elements and IP blocks, as required in complex Systems-on-Chip (SoCs). The topic can be considered as a multidisciplinary synthesis of multiprocessing, parallel computing, networking, and on- chip communication domains. Networks-on-Chip, in addition to standard communication services, can be employed for providing support for the implementation of system-level services. This dissertation will demonstrate how high-level services can be added to an MPSoC platform by embedding appropriate hardware/software support in the network interfaces (NIs) of the NoC. In this dissertation, the implementation of innovative modules acting in parallel with protocol translation and data transmission in NIs is proposed and evaluated. The modules can support the execution of the high-level services in the NoC at a relatively low cost in terms of area and energy consumption. Three types of services will be addressed and discussed: security, monitoring, and fault tolerance. With respect to the security aspect, this dissertation will discuss the implementation of an innovative data protection mechanism for detecting and preventing illegal accesses to protected memory blocks and/or memory mapped peripherals. The second aspect will be addressed by proposing the implementation of a monitoring system based on programmable multipurpose monitoring probes aimed at detecting NoC internal events and run-time characteristics. As last topic, new architectural solutions for the design of fault tolerant network interfaces will be presented and discussed

    CROSS-LAYER DESIGN, OPTIMIZATION AND PROTOTYPING OF NoCs FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF HOMOGENEOUS MANY-CORE SYSTEMS

    This thesis provides a whole set of design methods to enable and manage the runtime heterogeneity of features-rich industry-ready Tile-Based Networkon- Chips at different abstraction layers (Architecture Design, Network Assembling, Testing of NoC, Runtime Operation). The key idea is to maintain the functionalities of the original layers, and to improve the performance of architectures by allowing, joint optimization and layer coordinations. In general purpose systems, we address the microarchitectural challenges by codesigning and co-optimizing feature-rich architectures. In application-specific NoCs, we emphasize the event notification, so that the platform is continuously under control. At the network assembly level, this thesis proposes a Hold Time Robustness technique, to tackle the hold time issue in synchronous NoCs. At the network architectural level, the choice of a suitable synchronization paradigm requires a boost of synthesis flow as well as the coexistence with the DVFS. On one hand this implies the coexistence of mesochronous synchronizers in the network with dual-clock FIFOs at network boundaries. On the other hand, dual-clock FIFOs may be placed across inter-switch links hence removing the need for mesochronous synchronizers. This thesis will study the implications of the above approaches both on the design flow and on the performance and power quality metrics of the network. Once the manycore system is composed together, the issue of testing it arises. This thesis takes on this challenge and engineers various testing infrastructures. At the upper abstraction layer, the thesis addresses the issue of managing the fully operational system and proposes a congestion management technique named HACS. Moreover, some of the ideas of this thesis will undergo an FPGA prototyping. Finally, we provide some features for emerging technology by characterizing the power consumption of Optical NoC Interfaces

    Modeling and Analysis of Mixed Synchronous/Asynchronous Systems

    Practical safety-critical distributed systems must integrate safety critical and non-critical data in a common platform. Safety critical systems almost always consist of isochronous components that have synchronous or asynchronous interface with other components. Many of these systems also support a mix of synchronous and asynchronous interfaces. This report presents a study on the modeling and analysis of asynchronous, synchronous, and mixed synchronous/asynchronous systems. We build on the SAE Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) to capture architectures for analysis. We present preliminary work targeted to capture mixed low- and high-criticality data, as well as real-time properties in a common Model of Computation (MoC).     Toolflows for Mapping Convolutional Neural Networks on FPGAs: A Survey and Future Directions

    In the past decade, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in various Artificial Intelligence tasks. To accelerate the experimentation and development of CNNs, several software frameworks have been released, primarily targeting power-hungry CPUs and GPUs. In this context, reconfigurable hardware in the form of FPGAs constitutes a potential alternative platform that can be integrated in the existing deep learning ecosystem to provide a tunable balance between performance, power consumption and programmability. In this paper, a survey of the existing CNN-to-FPGA toolflows is presented, comprising a comparative study of their key characteristics which include the supported applications, architectural choices, design space exploration methods and achieved performance. Moreover, major challenges and objectives introduced by the latest trends in CNN algorithmic research are identified and presented.     SdrLift: A Domain-Specific Intermediate Hardware Synthesis Framework for Prototyping Software-Defined Radios

    Modern design of Software-Defined Radio (SDR) applications is based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) due to their ability to be configured into solution architectures that are well suited to domain-specific problems while achieving the best trade-off between performance, power, area, and flexibility. FPGAs are well known for rich computational resources, which traditionally include logic, register, and routing resources. The increased technological advances have seen FPGAs incorporating more complex components that comprise sophisticated memory blocks, Digital Signal Processing (DSP) blocks, and high-speed interfacing to Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) bus. Gateware for programming FPGAs is described at a lowlevel of design abstraction using Register Transfer Language (RTL), typically using either VHSIC-HDL (VHDL) or Verilog code. In practice, the low-level description languages have a very steep learning curve, provide low productivity for hardware designers and lack readily available open-source library support for fundamental designs, and consequently limit the design to only hardware experts. These limitations have led to the adoption of High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools that raise design abstraction using syntax, semantics, and software development notations that are well-known to most software developers. However, while HLS has made programming of FPGAs more accessible and can increase the productivity of design, they are still not widely adopted in the design community due to the low-level skills that are still required to produce efficient designs. Additionally, the resultant RTL code from HLS tools is often difficult to decipher, modify and optimize due to the functionality and micro-architecture that are coupled together in a single High-Level Language (HLL). In order to alleviate these problems, Domain-Specific Languages (DSL) have been introduced to capture algorithms at a high level of abstraction with more expressive power and providing domain-specific optimizations that factor in new transformations and the trade-off between resource utilization and system performance. The problem of existing DSLs is that they are designed around imperative languages with an instruction sequence that does not match the hardware structure and intrinsics, leading to hardware designs with system properties that are unconformable to the high-level specifications and constraints. The aim of this thesis is, therefore, to design and implement an intermediatelevel framework namely SdrLift for use in high-level rapid prototyping of SDR applications that are based on an FPGA. The SdrLift input is a HLL developed using functional language constructs and design patterns that specify the structural behavior of the application design. The functionality of the SdrLift language is two-fold, first, it can be used directly by a designer to develop the SDR applications, secondly, it can be used as the Intermediate Representation (IR) step that is generated by a higher-level language or a DSL. The SdrLift compiler uses the dataflow graph as an IR to structurally represent the accelerator micro-architecture in which the components correspond to the fine-level and coarse-level Hardware blocks (HW Block) which are either auto-synthesized or integrated from existing reusable Intellectual Property (IP) core libraries. Another IR is in the form of a dataflow model and it is used for composition and global interconnection of the HW Blocks while making efficient interfacing decisions in an attempt to satisfy speed and resource usage objectives. Moreover, the dataflow model provides rules and properties that will be used to provide a theoretical framework that formally analyzes the characteristics of SDR applications (i.e. the throughput, sample rate, latency, and buffer size among other factors). Using both the directed graph flow (DFG) and the dataflow model in the SdrLift compiler provides two benefits: an abstraction of the microarchitecture from the high-level algorithm specifications and also decoupling of the microarchitecture from the low-level RTL implementation. Following the IR creation and model analyses is the VHDL code generation which employs the low-level optimizations that ensure optimal hardware design results. The code generation process per forms analysis to ensure the resultant hardware system conforms to the high-level design specifications and constraints. SdrLift is evaluated by developing representative SDR case studies, in which the VHDL code for eight different SDR applications is generated. The experimental results show that SdrLift achieves the desired performance and flexibility, while also conserving the hardware resources utilized
