    Route Planning in Transportation Networks

    We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond, while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses, trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on approximate solutions even for metropolitan inputs.Comment: This is an updated version of the technical report MSR-TR-2014-4, previously published by Microsoft Research.     Sparse Fault-Tolerant BFS Trees

    This paper addresses the problem of designing a sparse {\em fault-tolerant} BFS tree, or {\em FT-BFS tree} for short, namely, a sparse subgraph TT of the given network GG such that subsequent to the failure of a single edge or vertex, the surviving part TT' of TT still contains a BFS spanning tree for (the surviving part of) GG. Our main results are as follows. We present an algorithm that for every nn-vertex graph GG and source node ss constructs a (single edge failure) FT-BFS tree rooted at ss with O(n \cdot \min\{\Depth(s), \sqrt{n}\}) edges, where \Depth(s) is the depth of the BFS tree rooted at ss. This result is complemented by a matching lower bound, showing that there exist nn-vertex graphs with a source node ss for which any edge (or vertex) FT-BFS tree rooted at ss has Ω(n3/2)\Omega(n^{3/2}) edges. We then consider {\em fault-tolerant multi-source BFS trees}, or {\em FT-MBFS trees} for short, aiming to provide (following a failure) a BFS tree rooted at each source sSs\in S for some subset of sources SVS\subseteq V. Again, tight bounds are provided, showing that there exists a poly-time algorithm that for every nn-vertex graph and source set SVS \subseteq V of size σ\sigma constructs a (single failure) FT-MBFS tree T(S)T^*(S) from each source siSs_i \in S, with O(σn3/2)O(\sqrt{\sigma} \cdot n^{3/2}) edges, and on the other hand there exist nn-vertex graphs with source sets SVS \subseteq V of cardinality σ\sigma, on which any FT-MBFS tree from SS has Ω(σn3/2)\Omega(\sqrt{\sigma}\cdot n^{3/2}) edges. Finally, we propose an O(logn)O(\log n) approximation algorithm for constructing FT-BFS and FT-MBFS structures. The latter is complemented by a hardness result stating that there exists no Ω(logn)\Omega(\log n) approximation algorithm for these problems under standard complexity assumptions

    Internet's Critical Path Horizon

    Internet is known to display a highly heterogeneous structure and complex fluctuations in its traffic dynamics. Congestion seems to be an inevitable result of user's behavior coupled to the network dynamics and it effects should be minimized by choosing appropriate routing strategies. But what are the requirements of routing depth in order to optimize the traffic flow? In this paper we analyse the behavior of Internet traffic with a topologically realistic spatial structure as described in a previous study (S-H. Yook et al. ,Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA, {\bf 99} (2002) 13382). The model involves self-regulation of packet generation and different levels of routing depth. It is shown that it reproduces the relevant key, statistical features of Internet's traffic. Moreover, we also report the existence of a critical path horizon defining a transition from low-efficient traffic to highly efficient flow. This transition is actually a direct consequence of the web's small world architecture exploited by the routing algorithm. Once routing tables reach the network diameter, the traffic experiences a sudden transition from a low-efficient to a highly-efficient behavior. It is conjectured that routing policies might have spontaneously reached such a compromise in a distributed manner.     Compact Routing on Internet-Like Graphs

    The Thorup-Zwick (TZ) routing scheme is the first generic stretch-3 routing scheme delivering a nearly optimal local memory upper bound. Using both direct analysis and simulation, we calculate the stretch distribution of this routing scheme on random graphs with power-law node degree distributions, PkkγP_k \sim k^{-\gamma}. We find that the average stretch is very low and virtually independent of γ\gamma. In particular, for the Internet interdomain graph, γ2.1\gamma \sim 2.1, the average stretch is around 1.1, with up to 70% of paths being shortest. As the network grows, the average stretch slowly decreases. The routing table is very small, too. It is well below its upper bounds, and its size is around 50 records for 10410^4-node networks. Furthermore, we find that both the average shortest path length (i.e. distance) dˉ\bar{d} and width of the distance distribution σ\sigma observed in the real Internet inter-AS graph have values that are very close to the minimums of the average stretch in the dˉ\bar{d}- and σ\sigma-directions. This leads us to the discovery of a unique critical quasi-stationary point of the average TZ stretch as a function of dˉ\bar{d} and σ\sigma. The Internet distance distribution is located in a close neighborhood of this point. This observation suggests the analytical structure of the average stretch function may be an indirect indicator of some hidden optimization criteria influencing the Internet's interdomain topology evolution.Comment: 29 pages, 16 figure

    Strong Nash Equilibria in Games with the Lexicographical Improvement Property

    We introduce a class of finite strategic games with the property that every deviation of a coalition of players that is profitable to each of its members strictly decreases the lexicographical order of a certain function defined on the set of strategy profiles. We call this property the Lexicographical Improvement Property (LIP) and show that it implies the existence of a generalized strong ordinal potential function. We use this characterization to derive existence, efficiency and fairness properties of strong Nash equilibria. We then study a class of games that generalizes congestion games with bottleneck objectives that we call bottleneck congestion games. We show that these games possess the LIP and thus the above mentioned properties. For bottleneck congestion games in networks, we identify cases in which the potential function associated with the LIP leads to polynomial time algorithms computing a strong Nash equilibrium. Finally, we investigate the LIP for infinite games. We show that the LIP does not imply the existence of a generalized strong ordinal potential, thus, the existence of SNE does not follow. Assuming that the function associated with the LIP is continuous, however, we prove existence of SNE. As a consequence, we prove that bottleneck congestion games with infinite strategy spaces and continuous cost functions possess a strong Nash equilibrium

    Interval Routing Schemes for Circular-Arc Graphs

    Interval routing is a space efficient method to realize a distributed routing function. In this paper we show that every circular-arc graph allows a shortest path strict 2-interval routing scheme, i.e., by introducing a global order on the vertices and assigning at most two (strict) intervals in this order to the ends of every edge allows to depict a routing function that implies exclusively shortest paths. Since circular-arc graphs do not allow shortest path 1-interval routing schemes in general, the result implies that the class of circular-arc graphs has strict compactness 2, which was a hitherto open question. Additionally, we show that the constructed 2-interval routing scheme is a 1-interval routing scheme with at most one additional interval assigned at each vertex and we an outline algorithm to calculate the routing scheme for circular-arc graphs in O(n^2) time, where n is the number of vertices.Comment: 17 pages, to appear in "International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science
