The review identifies representative international collaborative preservation initiatives, describes their goals and results, their specific preservation strategie, and their applicability to the preservation of born digital open access materials

    Computer-Aided Validation of Formal Conceptual Models

    Conceptual modelling is the process of the software life cycle concerned with the identification and specification of requirements for the system to be built. The use of formal specification languages provides more precise and concise specifications. Nevertheless, there is still a need for techniques to support the validation of formal specifications against the informal user requirements. A limitation of formal specifications is that they cannot readily be understood by users unless they have been specially trained. However, user validation can be facilitated by exploiting the executable aspects of formal specification languages. This thesis presents a systematic approach and workbench environment to support the construction and validation through animation of TROLL specifications. Our approach is an iterative requirements definition process consisting of the formal specification of requirements, the automatic transformation of the specification into an executable form, and the interactive animation of the executable version to validate user requirements. To provide objects with persistence in the animation environment, we analyse how the static structure of TROLL objects can be mapped into relational tables. In order to execute the specification, we analyse the operational meaning of state transitions in TROLL, determine an execution model, and describe the transformation of the specifications into C++ code. We present a prototype implementation of the workbench environment.Die konzeptionelle Modellierung ist die Phase im Softwareentwurf, die sich mit der Identifikation und der Spezifikation von Systemanforderungen befasst. Formale Spezifikationssprachen ermöglichen prĂ€zisere und eindeutigere Spezifikationen. Trotzdem werden Techniken zur Validierung von formalen Spezifikationen bezĂŒglich der informellen Benutzeranforderungen weiterhin benötigt. Ein Nachteil von formalen Spezifikationen ist, dass sie fĂŒr Benutzer ohne entsprechende Vorkenntnisse nicht leicht verstĂ€ndlich sind. Die Einbeziehung der Benutzer in den Validierungsprozess kann jedoch durch die AusfĂŒhrung der Spezifikation vereinfacht werden. Diese Arbeit liefert einen systematischen Ansatz und eine Entwicklungsumgebung fĂŒr die Konstruktion von TROLL-Spezifikationen und deren Validierung durch Animation. Unser Ansatz basiert auf einem iterativen Prozess zur Anforderungsdefinition bestehend aus der formalen Spezifikation von Anforderungen, der automatischen Übersetzung der Spezifikation in eine ausfĂŒhrbare Form, und der interaktiven Animation um die Benutzeranforderungen zu validieren.     Policy And Market Analysis Of World Dogfish Fisheries And An Evaluation Of The Feasibility Of A Dogfish Fishery In Waters Of Alaska, Usa

    Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2011Spiny dogfish is a valuable commodity on the world market and has a global capture distribution. There are three chapters evaluating dogfish markets and fisheries in this dissertation; Chapter 2 evaluates the spatial distribution of dogfish in the Gulf of Alaska; Chapter 3 provides an overview of world markets and evaluates conditions that have led to a decline in dogfish product demand in Europe; and Chapter 4 uses the information from the previous 2 chapters to provide and policy and market overview of dogfish fisheries in Alaska. Results from this study provide a comprehensive world overview of the modern dogfish fisheries and market segmentation using an evaluation of trade and price statistics. These results indicate that the dogfish market is adulterated, supplied by both sustainable and non-sustainable dogfish sources. Media attention resulting from overfishing has reduced demand for dogfish products in Europe due to the adulterated market. Overcoming the loss of market share will require eco-labeling to inform consumers about sustainable dogfish stocks. The impact of eco-labeling in Asian countries is less clear due to unknown inter-Asian market channels for fins and meat and little information on consumer attitudes towards labels. Alaska products could leverage either Asian or European consumers, but a profitable fishery will likely require regulatory changes and improved stock assessment to allow a directed fishery. In addition, pending regulatory changes, establishing robust market channels between Alaska and Europe will likely require some form of eco-labeling; especially given current eco-labeling efforts in Canada and the Atlantic US

    Concept study of modification alternatives for the High Pressure Cap Running Tool

    Master's thesis in Industrial economicsThis thesis is a result of a request from Aker Solutions regarding a modification project of a high pressure cap running tool. This tool is used to set and retrieve the high pressure cap from the flow line mandrel when the xmas tree is not installed. Aker Solutions has identified challenges concerning the complexity, costs and time associated with the operation of the tool, and come up with four concepts that may solve these challenges. The task of this thesis is to look into the engineering challenges and the life cycle costs of each of the concepts. The goal is to provide a recommendation for which concept Aker Solutions should pursue through the research question: What is the best-suited modification solution for the Aker Solutions high pressure cap running tool? The four identified concepts that have been analysed and evaluated, seek to solve complexity, cost and time issues concerning the current method of operation, which utilises an umbilical for hydraulic power supply for the tool. The first is a pre-charged accumulator concept, which uses an internal hydraulic reservoir to supply the tool. Concept number two uses a topside hotline to provide the hydraulics. Concept number three uses a subsea hotline from an ROV. Concept number four uses a hotline from a subsea powerpack. The different concepts are analysed and evaluated against the current method on nine different scored and weighted criteria, based on 36 interviews. The criteria reflect the identified issues and are as follows: feasibility, physical parameters, maintainability, reliability, complexity in use, economic impact, development cost and time, degree of risk reduction and environmental impact. These unbiased and weighted criteria scores, reflect the impression of how each criterion’s criticality are perceived in Aker Solutions as an organisation. The analysis and evaluation utilises a Pugh matrix for pairwise comparison as a decision-making tool and delivers a best-suited concept suggestion. Based on this analysis and evaluation the Pugh matrix suggests that the pre-charged accumulator concept is the best alternative, with a significantly better result than the opposed concepts. The Pugh matrix does however not consider which of the “+” rated concepts perform best on each criterion in relation to the other concepts in the matrix. This is addressed in a qualitative evaluation where the pre-charged accumulator concept is compared to the other concepts on each criterion and the nuances are highlighted. It further shows that the pre-charged accumulator concept has a lower life cycle cost that mitigates the slightly lower performance on maintainability and development cost and time. The only innuendo is that it does not reduce risk as much as the hotline subsea concepts. This can however be accounted for with a thorough operational procedure. The conclusion is that the best-suited modification solution for Aker Solutions Subsea high pressure cap running tool is the pre-charged accumulator concept. This contributes with potential savings for Statoil of 72.7 MNOK, increased rig time efficiency of 57.9%, increased redundancy, reduced operational risk and a more eco-friendly solution.Aker Solution

    Integration of UTM and U-Space on Norwegian continental shelf

    In this master thesis, we present an overview of the U-Space and Regulations in Europe, while also taking into consideration the progression of the integration of both parts in Norwegian airspace over the Norwegian continental shelf. This thesis is mainly separated into three parts. The first part is taking a look into the European Union's roadmap/plan for establishing an Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) and how they plan to develop their system into a single European sky. The end goal is that essentially every operator of a drone can do so all over Europe without having any issues with crossing borders or different regulations. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to a detailed insight into the technical side of a UTM, the different layers, examples of which systems are the most relevant to be utilized on the Norwegian continental shelf. The third part of this thesis is dedicated to looking at the regulatory side of things, in regards of the UTM system in itself, different factors of drone operations, requirements for every part of an operation. In addition, discussing and concluding about everything we have been though in the thesis. Additionally, there are uses cases where everything comes together to see how it would work in practise and in certain scenarios. In the final part of the thesis the previous parts of the project will be discussed, as well as drawing final conclusions to the project

    Standards are very important as they provide requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose. They contribute to remove technical barriers to trade, leading to new markets and economic growth for industry. They also facilitate technology transfer and they contribute to ensure safety of products thereby affecting the daily life of citizens. This report ‘How will standards facilitate new production systems in the context of EU innovation and competitiveness in 2025?’ is the outcome of a foresight process looking at how standards and standardisation can become even more relevant policy tool supporting different European policies. The study has especially looked at the areas where Europe drives innovation, where the development of new products and processes could lead to new trade of goods, services and technologies. The foresight process has dealt with standardisation by using a holistic approach. It explored at how effective standards can be developed within a European industrial landscape vision able to contribute to jobs and growth in a sustainable manner. The report provides a clear overview of the evolution of the European production system and illustrates what are the drivers of change influencing the future production system.
