Within our financial system, a bank’s prospects and viability depend on its ability to attract investors and customers. This fundamental need means that banks and bank management must operate under the framework of market discipline and in a manner that meets the dictates of market participants. In other words, market discipline serves as the principal force influencing the performance of our financial markets.> In a speech given at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Annual Conference on Bank Structure and Competition, Mr. Hoenig explored how the financial revolution we are now experiencing is clearly increasing the importance of market discipline in banking. Most notably, the removal of many traditional bank regulatory restraints and controls over the past few decades is expanding the role of the marketplace in allocating financial resources, encouraging innovation, and exerting discipline over banks.> However, as the importance of market discipline is increasing, an essential prerequisite for effective market discipline–timely and accurate information to guide market participants–is becoming more difficult to achieve, even with the many advances we are making in processing and analyzing financial data. Consequently, a critical goal for us to explore is how to enhance market discipline by providing market participants with adequate, timely, and accurate information for making decisions. Mr. Hoenig’s comments focus on what bank supervisors might be able to do to improve market access to information on banking organizations and to thereby enhance financial market discipline.Bank supervision

In this paper, we report on the results of a questionnaire conducted with 160 teenage students in Bangladesh. The purpose of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of the students’ beliefs in regards to the innateness of intelligence(i.e., their mindsets), especially whether students believed becoming proficient in English depended on having an innate skill and luck or could be nurtured through hard work and discipline. The results of the study suggested students in Bangladesh tend to have growth mindsets in their English studies. When the sample was divided into two groups according to their courses of study, it was discovered that students studying science had significantly stronger growth mindsets for English than students studying humanities

The Computer and the Classification of Script

In the 1970s Bernhard Bischoff famously predicted that, thanks to technology, palaeography was on the road to becoming an art of measurement. The journey down this road has not been smooth, however, for several reasons. Although the idea of measurement seems uncontroversial, E.A. Lowe's attempt to measure the number of manuscripts written in half-uncial script shows that the script names that lie at the heart of palaeographical descriptions pose an insuperable problem, whether to man or machine. The reasons for this unsatisfactory system lie in the historical development of the discipline from its invention in the late-17th century. From the first, the names of scripts were used to localise manuscripts in time and place, and the names palaeographers use today are the direct descendants of these early systems. In the mid-20th century palaeographers began to focus on a different way of looking at script by exploring the strokes used to create the letters (ductus). These two approaches have led to a discipline divided between Linnaeans who emphasize taxonomy and Darwinians who emphasize evolution. Most digital palaeography has focused on the first, while the second could offer a richer vein to mine

School Discipline Programs: Issues and Implications for School Counselors

Discipline within schools is becoming an increasing priority. School counselors, together with other education professionals, acknowledge that productive schools need effective discipline programs. Numerous authors have argued that discipline precedes learning in the school environment (Major, 1990; Reyes, 1991). Public opinion polls (Gallup & Elam, 1988) have consistently identified school discipline as a major problem of public education. Baker (1985) suggested that educators must be concerned about the lack of discipline in the schools because an educational environment depends on good discipline. Civil behavior by students is a prerequisite for effective learning and the misbehavior of just one student has the potential to negatively affect an entire class (Baker, 1985)

Information Systems is Not a Reference Discipline (And What We Can Do About It)

A number of recent papers have proclaimed that the IS field has approached the status of a reference discipline. The paper draws on citation data from 33 IS and non-IS journals over 12 years to test this assertion. Analysis of this data suggests that the IS field has left a modest imprint on other sub-fields of management. Based on this evidence, the paper concludes that IS is not yet a reference discipline, but has the potential to become one. We propose number of measures to enhance the external influence of the field that may, in time, lead to it becoming a true reference discipline
