    Resource Allocation for Interference Management in Wireless Networks

    Interference in wireless networks is a major problem that impacts system performance quite substantially. Combined with the fact that the spectrum is limited and scarce, the performance and reliability of wireless systems significantly deteriorates and, hence, communication sessions are put at the risk of failure. In an attempt to make transmissions resilient to interference and, accordingly, design robust wireless systems, a diverse set of interference mitigation techniques are investigated in this dissertation. Depending on the rationale motivating the interfering node, interference can be divided into two categories, communication and jamming. For communication interference such as the interference created by legacy users(e.g., primary user transmitters in a cognitive radio network) at non-legacy or unlicensed users(e.g.,secondary user receivers), two mitigation techniques are presented in this dissertation. One exploits permutation trellis codes combined with M-ary frequency shift keying in order to make SU transmissions resilient to PUs’ interference, while the other utilizes frequency allocation as a mitigation technique against SU interference using Matching theory. For jamming interference, two mitigation techniques are also investigated here. One technique exploits time and structures a jammer mitigation framework through an automatic repeat request protocol. The other one utilizes power and, following a game-theoretic framework, employs a defense strategy against jamming based on a strategic power allocation. Superior performance of all of the proposed mitigation techniques is shown via numerical results

    The research work presented in this thesis is based on the concept and defintion of network that can spread in several and different real world contexts. Indeed, we can refer to a network in a telecommunications sense considering a collection of transmitters, receivers, and communication channels that send or are used to send information to one another. However, as a matter of fact, in nature there are other several examples of networks: the human brain is one of them. The relationship between the actors in Hollywood can be studied in terms of network as well, a generic social community can be compared to a network, eco-systems are networks of species. The recent Network Science aims at studying all these systems using a set of common mathematical methods. In the following of the thesis, we will focus on some of well known telecommunications networks issues using standard telecommunications procedures to address them, with relevant reference to video flow transmissions and management of electric vehicles networks. At the same time, different models aiming at reach the same goals in contexts that may differ from a telecommunications setup can be used. In more details, we will evaluate queueing systems, jamming problems, groups recognition in networks, and mobile computing using game theoretic approaches. It is worth noting that this aspect can be also seen in a reverse order. Indeed, we will discuss how standard telecommunications analysis can be used to investigate on problems not directly related to a telecommunications background. In particular, one of our future purposes is to investigate on the brain connectivity that is raising significant interest in the recent scientific society

    LTE Frequency Hopping Jammer

    The goal of this project was to show that communication with a cellular base station and user equipment could be interfered with using narrowband jamming. Specifically, a randomized frequency hopping jammer was used as the main method to disrupt service. The testbed was built with OpenAirInterface, software-defined radios, and a Samsung s4 phone. It was found to be possible to greatly disrupt communications in an LTE system with a jammer

    Cooperative jamming via spectrum leasing

    Abstract—Secure communication rates can be facilitated or enhanced via deployment of cooperative jammers in a multi-terminal environment. Such an approach typically assumes ded-icated and/or altruistic jamming nodes, investing their resources for the good of the whole system. In this paper, we demonstrate that jammers can be recruited to provide significant improve-ments of secrecy rates even when this assumption is alleviated. A game-theoretic framework is proposed where a source node, towards the maximization of its secrecy rate, utilizes the jamming services from a set of non-altruistic nodes, compensating them with a fraction of its bandwidth for transmission of their user data. With the goal of maximizing their user-data transmission rate priced by the invested power, potential cooperative jammers will provide the jamming/transmitting power that is generally proportional to the amount of leased bandwidth. Elaborating initially on a single-jammer scenario, interaction between the source and a cooperative jammer is modeled as the Stackelberg leader-follower game. The scheme is further extended to involve multiple potential jammers, applying competition mechanisms such as the auctioning and power control game, while maintain-ing the Stackelberg framework. I

    Airborne Wireless Sensor Networks for Airplane Monitoring System

    In traditional airplane monitoring system (AMS), data sensed from strain, vibration, ultrasound of structures or temperature, and humidity in cabin environment are transmitted to central data repository via wires. However, drawbacks still exist in wired AMS such as expensive installation and maintenance, and complicated wired connections. In recent years, accumulating interest has been drawn to performing AMS via airborne wireless sensor network (AWSN) system with the advantages of flexibility, low cost, and easy deployment. In this review, we present an overview of AMS and AWSN and demonstrate the requirements of AWSN for AMS particularly. Furthermore, existing wireless hardware prototypes and network communication schemes of AWSN are investigated according to these requirements. This paper will improve the understanding of how the AWSN design under AMS acquires sensor data accurately and carries out network communication efficiently, providing insights into prognostics and health management (PHM) for AMS in future

    Characterisation and performance analysis of random linear network coding for reliable and secure communication

    In this thesis, we develop theoretical frameworks to characterize the performance of Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC), and propose novel communication schemes for the achievement of both reliability and security in wireless networks. In particular, (i) we present an analytical model to evaluate the performance of practical RLNC schemes suitable for low-complexity receivers, prioritized (i.e., layered) coding and multi-hop communications, (ii) investigate the performance of RLNC in relay assisted networks and propose a new cross-layer RLNC-aided cooperative scheme for reliable communication, (iii) characterize the secrecy feature of RLNC and propose a new physical-application layer security technique for the purpose of achieving security and reliability in multi-hope communications. At first, we investigate random block matrices and derive mathematical expressions for the enumeration of full-rank matrices that contain blocks of random entries arranged in a diagonal, lower-triangular or tri-diagonal structure. The derived expressions are then used to model the probability that a receiver will successfully decode a source message or layers of a service, when RLNC based on non-overlapping, expanding or sliding generations is employed. Moreover, the design parameters of these schemes allow to adjust the desired decoding performance. Next, we evaluate the performance of Random Linear Network Coded Cooperation (RLNCC) in relay assisted networks, and propose a cross-layer cooperative scheme which combines the emerging Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) technique and RLNCC. In this regard, we first consider the multiple-access relay channel in a setting where two source nodes transmit packets to a destination node, both directly and via a relay node. Secondly, we consider a multi-source multi-relay network, in which relay nodes employ RLNC on source packets and generate coded packets. For each network, we build our analysis on fundamental probability expressions for random matrices over finite fields and we derive theoretical expressions of the probability that the destination node will successfully decode the source packets. Finally, we consider a multi-relay network comprising of two groups of source nodes, where each group transmits packets to its own designated destination node over single-hop links and via a cluster of relay nodes shared by both groups. In an effort to boost reliability without sacrificing throughput, a scheme is proposed whereby packets at the relay nodes are combined using two methods; packets delivered by different groups are mixed using non-orthogonal multiple access principles, while packets originating from the same group are mixed using RLNC. An analytical framework that characterizes the performance of the proposed scheme is developed, and benchmarked against a counterpart scheme that is based on orthogonal multiple access. Finally, we quantify and characterize the intrinsic security feature of RLNC and design a joint physical-application layer security technique. For this purpose, we first consider a network comprising a transmitter, which employs RLNC to encode a message, a legitimate receiver, and a passive eavesdropper. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived to evaluate the intercept probability of RLNC, and a resource allocation model is presented to further minimize the intercept probability. Afterward, we propose a joint RLNC and opportunistic relaying scheme in a multi relay network to transmit confi- dential data to a destination in the presence of an eavesdropper. Four relay selection protocols are studied covering a range of network capabilities, such as the availability of the eavesdropper’s channel state information or the possibility to pair the selected relay with a jammer node that intentionally generates interference. For each case, expressions of the probability that a coded packet will not be decoded by a receiver, which can be either the destination or the eavesdropper, are derived. Based on those expressions, a framework is developed that characterizes the probability of the eavesdropper intercepting a sufficient number of coded packets and partially or fully decoding the confidential data. We observe that the field size over which RLNC is performed at the application layer as well as the adopted modulation and coding scheme at the physical layer can be modified to fine-tune the trade-off between security and reliability

    Towards edge robotics: the progress from cloud-based robotic systems to intelligent and context-aware robotic services

    Current robotic systems handle a different range of applications such as video surveillance, delivery of goods, cleaning, material handling, assembly, painting, or pick and place services. These systems have been embraced not only by the general population but also by the vertical industries to help them in performing daily activities. Traditionally, the robotic systems have been deployed in standalone robots that were exclusively dedicated to performing a specific task such as cleaning the floor in indoor environments. In recent years, cloud providers started to offer their infrastructures to robotic systems for offloading some of the robot’s functions. This ultimate form of the distributed robotic system was first introduced 10 years ago as cloud robotics and nowadays a lot of robotic solutions are appearing in this form. As a result, standalone robots became software-enhanced objects with increased reconfigurability as well as decreased complexity and cost. Moreover, by offloading the heavy processing from the robot to the cloud, it is easier to share services and information from various robots or agents to achieve better cooperation and coordination. Cloud robotics is suitable for human-scale responsive and delay-tolerant robotic functionalities (e.g., monitoring, predictive maintenance). However, there is a whole set of real-time robotic applications (e.g., remote control, motion planning, autonomous navigation) that can not be executed with cloud robotics solutions, mainly because cloud facilities traditionally reside far away from the robots. While the cloud providers can ensure certain performance in their infrastructure, very little can be ensured in the network between the robots and the cloud, especially in the last hop where wireless radio access networks are involved. Over the last years advances in edge computing, fog computing, 5G NR, network slicing, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and network orchestration are stimulating the interest of the industrial sector to satisfy the stringent and real-time requirements of their applications. Robotic systems are a key piece in the industrial digital transformation and their benefits are very well studied in the literature. However, designing and implementing a robotic system that integrates all the emerging technologies and meets the connectivity requirements (e.g., latency, reliability) is an ambitious task. This thesis studies the integration of modern Information andCommunication Technologies (ICTs) in robotic systems and proposes some robotic enhancements that tackle the real-time constraints of robotic services. To evaluate the performance of the proposed enhancements, this thesis departs from the design and prototype implementation of an edge native robotic system that embodies the concepts of edge computing, fog computing, orchestration, and virtualization. The proposed edge robotics system serves to represent two exemplary robotic applications. In particular, autonomous navigation of mobile robots and remote-control of robot manipulator where the end-to-end robotic system is distributed between the robots and the edge server. The open-source prototype implementation of the designed edge native robotic system resulted in the creation of two real-world testbeds that are used in this thesis as a baseline scenario for the evaluation of new innovative solutions in robotic systems. After detailing the design and prototype implementation of the end-to-end edge native robotic system, this thesis proposes several enhancements that can be offered to robotic systems by adapting the concept of edge computing via the Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) framework. First, it proposes exemplary network context-aware enhancements in which the real-time information about robot connectivity and location can be used to dynamically adapt the end-to-end system behavior to the actual status of the communication (e.g., radio channel). Three different exemplary context-aware enhancements are proposed that aim to optimize the end-to-end edge native robotic system. Later, the thesis studies the capability of the edge native robotic system to offer potential savings by means of computation offloading for robot manipulators in different deployment configurations. Further, the impact of different wireless channels (e.g., 5G, 4G andWi-Fi) to support the data exchange between a robot manipulator and its remote controller are assessed. In the following part of the thesis, the focus is set on how orchestration solutions can support mobile robot systems to make high quality decisions. The application of OKpi as an orchestration algorithm and DLT-based federation are studied to meet the KPIs that autonomously controlledmobile robots have in order to provide uninterrupted connectivity over the radio access network. The elaborated solutions present high compatibility with the designed edge robotics system where the robot driving range is extended without any interruption of the end-to-end edge robotics service. While the DLT-based federation extends the robot driving range by deploying access point extension on top of external domain infrastructure, OKpi selects the most suitable access point and computing resource in the cloud-to-thing continuum in order to fulfill the latency requirements of autonomously controlled mobile robots. To conclude the thesis the focus is set on how robotic systems can improve their performance by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to generate smart decisions. To do so, the edge native robotic system is presented as a true embodiment of a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) in Industry 4.0, showing the mission of AI in such concept. It presents the key enabling technologies of the edge robotic system such as edge, fog, and 5G, where the physical processes are integrated with computing and network domains. The role of AI in each technology domain is identified by analyzing a set of AI agents at the application and infrastructure level. In the last part of the thesis, the movement prediction is selected to study the feasibility of applying a forecast-based recovery mechanism for real-time remote control of robotic manipulators (FoReCo) that uses ML to infer lost commands caused by interference in the wireless channel.     Optimal Channel-Switching Strategies in Multi-channel Wireless Networks.

    The dual nature of scarcity and under-utilization of spectrum resources, as well as recent advances in software-defined radio, led to extensive study on the design of transceivers that are capable of opportunistic channel access. By allowing users to dynamically select which channel(s) to use for transmission, the overall throughput performance and the spectrum utilization of the system can in general be improved, compared to one with a single channel or more static channel allocations. The reason for such improvement lies in the exploitation of the underlying temporal, spatial, spectral and congestion diversity. In this dissertation, we focus on the channel-switching/hopping decision of a (group of) legitimate user(s) in a multi-channel wireless communication system, and study three closely related problems: 1) a jamming defense problem against a no-regret learning attacker, 2) a jamming defense problem with minimax (worst-case) optimal channel-switching strategies, and 3) the throughput optimal strategies for a group of competing users in IEEE 802.11-like medium access schemes. For the first problem we study the interaction between a user and an attacker from a learning perspective, where an online learner naturally adapts to the available information on the adversarial environment over time, and evolves its strategy with certain payoff guarantee. We show how the user can counter a strong learning attacker with knowledge on its learning rationale, and how the learning technique can itself be considered as a countermeasure with no such prior information. We further consider in the second problem the worst-case optimal strategy for the user without prior information on the attacking pattern, except that the attacker is subject to a resource constraint, which models its energy consumption and replenishment process. We provide explicit characterization for the optimal strategies and show the most damaging attacker, interestingly, behaves randomly in an i.i.d. fashion. In the last problem, we consider a group of competing users in a non-adversarial setting. We place the interaction among users in the context of IEEE 802.11-like medium access schemes, and derive decentralized channel allocation for overall throughput improvement.     Virtual SATCOM, Long Range Broadband Digital Communications

    The current naval strategy is based on a distributed force, networked together with high-speed communications that enable operations as an intelligent, fast maneuvering force. Satellites, the existing network connector, are weak and vulnerable to attack. HF is an alternative, but it does not have the information throughput to meet the distributed warfighting need. The US Navy does not have a solution to reduce dependency on space-based communication systems while providing the warfighter with the required information speed. Virtual SATCOM is a solution that can match satellite communications (SATCOM) data speed without the vulnerable satellite. It is wireless communication on a High Frequency (HF) channel at SATCOM speed. We have developed an innovative design using high power and gain, ground-based relay systems. We transmit extremely wide-wideband HF channels from ground stations using large directional antennas. Our system starts with a highly directional antenna with a narrow beam that enables increased bandwidth without interfering with other spectrum users. The beam focus and power provide a high SNR across a wideband channel with data rates of 10 Mbps; 1000 times increase in HF data speed. Our modeling of the ionosphere shows that the ionosphere has more than adequate bandwidth to communicate at 3000 km and high speeds while avoiding detection. We designed a flexible structure adjustable to the dynamic ionosphere. Our design provides a high-speed communications path without the geo-location vulnerability of legacy HF methods. Our invention will benefit mobile users using steerable beam forming apertures with wide bandwidth signals. This dissertation will focus on three areas: an examination of the ionosphere’s ability to support the channel, design of a phased array antenna that can produce the narrow beam, and design of signal processing that can accommodate the wideband HF frequency range.
