    Dynamic Routing for Flying Ad Hoc Networks

    This paper reports experimental results on self-organizing wireless networks carried by small flying robots. Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) composed of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are flexible, inexpensive and fast to deploy. This makes them a very attractive technology for many civilian and military applications. Due to the high mobility of the nodes, maintaining a communication link between the UAVs is a challenging task. The topology of these networks is more dynamic than that of typical mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and of typical vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs). As a consequence, the existing routing protocols designed for MANETs partly fail in tracking network topology changes. In this work, we compare two different routing algorithms for ad hoc networks: optimized link-state routing (OLSR), and predictive-OLSR (P-OLSR). The latter is an OLSR extension that we designed for FANETs; it takes advantage of the GPS information available on board. To the best of our knowledge, P-OLSR is currently the only FANET-specific routing technique that has an available Linux implementation. We present results obtained by both Media Access Control (MAC) layer emulations and real-world experiments. In the experiments, we used a testbed composed of two autonomous fixed-wing UAVs and a node on the ground. Our experiments evaluate the link performance and the communication range, as well as the routing performance. Our emulation and experimental results show that P-OLSR significantly outperforms OLSR in routing in the presence of frequent network topology changes

    Routing in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks using Social Tie Strengths and Mobility Plans

    We consider the problem of routing in a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) for which the planned mobilities of the nodes are partially known a priori and the nodes travel in groups. This situation arises commonly in military and emergency response scenarios. Optimal routes are computed using the most reliable path principle in which the negative logarithm of a node pair's adjacency probability is used as a link weight metric. This probability is estimated using the mobility plan as well as dynamic information captured by table exchanges, including a measure of the social tie strength between nodes. The latter information is useful when nodes deviate from their plans or when the plans are inaccurate. We compare the proposed routing algorithm with the commonly-used optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol in ns-3 simulations. As the OLSR protocol does not exploit the mobility plans, it relies on link state determination which suffers with increasing mobility. Our simulations show considerably better throughput performance with the proposed approach as compared with OLSR at the expense of increased overhead. However, in the high-throughput regime, the proposed approach outperforms OLSR in terms of both throughput and overhead

    Speed-Aware Routing for UAV Ad-Hoc Networks

    In this paper we examine mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) composed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Due to the high-mobility of the nodes, these networks are very dynamic and the existing routing protocols partly fail to provide a reliable communication. We present Predictive-OLSR an extension to the Optimized Link-State Routing (OLSR) protocol: it enables efficient routing in very dynamic conditions. The key idea is to exploit GPS information to aid the routing protocol. Predictive-OLSR weights the expected transmission count (ETX) metric, taking into account the relative speed between the nodes. We provide numerical results obtained by a MAC-layer emulator that integrates a flight simulator to reproduce realistic flight conditions. These numerical results show that Predictive-OLSR significantly outperforms OLSR and BABEL, providing a reliable communication even in very dynamic conditions.Comment: submitted to GlobeCom'13 Workshop - Wi-UA

    Performance analysis of MANET routing protocols in the presence of self-similar traffic

    A number of measurement studies have convincingly demonstrated that network traffic can exhibit a noticeable self-similar nature, which has a considerable impact on queuing performance. However, many routing protocols developed for MANETs over the past few years have been primarily designed and analyzed under the assumptions of either CBR or Poisson traffic models, which are inherently unable to capture traffic self-similarity. It is crucial to re-examine the performance properties of MANETs in the context of more realistic traffic models before practical implementation show their potential performance limitations. In an effort towards this end, this paper evaluates the performance of three well-known and widely investigated MANET routing protocols, notably DSR, AODV and OLSR, in the presence of the bursty self-similar traffic. Different performance aspects are investigated including, delivery ratio, routing overhead, throughput and end-to-end delay. Our simulation results indicate that DSR routing protocol performs well with bursty traffic models compared to AODV and OLSR in terms of delivery ratio, throughput and end-to-end delay. On the other hand, OLSR performed poorly in the presence of self-similar traffic at high mobility especially in terms of data packet delivery ratio, routing overhead and delay. As for AODV routing protocol, the results show an average performance, yet a remarkably low and stable end-to-end delay
