    A Comprehensive Review on Autonomous Navigation

    The field of autonomous mobile robots has undergone dramatic advancements over the past decades. Despite achieving important milestones, several challenges are yet to be addressed. Aggregating the achievements of the robotic community as survey papers is vital to keep the track of current state-of-the-art and the challenges that must be tackled in the future. This paper tries to provide a comprehensive review of autonomous mobile robots covering topics such as sensor types, mobile robot platforms, simulation tools, path planning and following, sensor fusion methods, obstacle avoidance, and SLAM. The urge to present a survey paper is twofold. First, autonomous navigation field evolves fast so writing survey papers regularly is crucial to keep the research community well-aware of the current status of this field. Second, deep learning methods have revolutionized many fields including autonomous navigation. Therefore, it is necessary to give an appropriate treatment of the role of deep learning in autonomous navigation as well which is covered in this paper. Future works and research gaps will also be discussed

    Optical flow templates for mobile robot environment understanding

    In this work we develop optical flow templates. In doing so, we introduce a practical tool for inferring robot egomotion and semantic superpixel labeling using optical flow in imaging systems with arbitrary optics. In order to do this we develop valuable understanding of geometric relationships and mathematical methods that are useful in interpreting optical flow to the robotics and computer vision communities. This work is motivated by what we perceive as directions for advancing the current state of the art in obstacle detection and scene understanding for mobile robots. Specifically, many existing methods build 3D point clouds, which are not directly useful for autonomous navigation and require further processing. Both the step of building the point clouds and the later processing steps are challenging and computationally intensive. Additionally, many current methods require a calibrated camera, which introduces calibration challenges and places limitations on the types of camera optics that may be used. Wide-angle lenses, systems with mirrors, and multiple cameras all require different calibration models and can be difficult or impossible to calibrate at all. Finally, current pixel and superpixel obstacle labeling algorithms typically rely on image appearance. While image appearance is informative, image motion is a direct effect of the scene structure that determines whether a region of the environment is an obstacle. The egomotion estimation and obstacle labeling methods we develop here based on optical flow templates require very little computation per frame and do not require building point clouds. Additionally, they do not require any specific type of camera optics, nor a calibrated camera. Finally, they label obstacles using optical flow alone without image appearance. In this thesis we start with optical flow subspaces for egomotion estimation and detection of “motion anomalies”. We then extend this to multiple subspaces and develop mathematical reasoning to select between them, comprising optical flow templates. Using these we classify environment shapes and label superpixels. Finally, we show how performing all learning and inference directly from image spatio-temporal gradients greatly improves computation time and accuracy.Ph.D

O objectivo de utilizar mecanismos de atenção visual é o de focar a percepção nos aspectos do ambiente mais relevantes à tarefa do robô. Esta tese mostra que, na detecção de obstáculos e de trilhos, esta capacidade promove robustez e parcimónia computacional. Estas são características chave para a rapidez e eficiência dos robôs todo-o-terreno. Um dos maiores desafios na modelação de atenção visual advém da necessidade de gerir o compromisso velocidade-precisão na presença de variações de contexto ou de tarefa. Esta tese mostra que este compromisso é resolvido se o processo de atenção visual for modelado como um processo auto-organizado, cuja operação é modulada pelo módulo de selecção de acção, responsável pelo controlo do robô. Ao fechar a malha entre o processo de selecção de acção e o de percepção, o último é capaz de operar apenas onde é necessário, antecipando as acções do robô. Para fornecer atenção visual com propriedades auto-organizadas, este trabalho obtém inspiração da Natureza. Concretamente, os mecanismos responsáveis pela capacidade que as formigas guerreiras têm de procurar alimento de forma auto-organizada, são usados como metáfora na resolução da tarefa de procurar, também de forma auto-organizada, obstáculos e trilhos no campo visual do robô. A solução proposta nesta tese é a de colocar vários focos de atenção encoberta a operar como um enxame, através de interacções baseadas em feromona. Este trabalho representa a primeira realização corporizada de cognição de enxame. Este é um novo campo de investigação que procura descobrir os princípios básicos da cognição, inspeccionando as propriedades auto-organizadas da inteligência colectiva exibida pelos insectos sociais.     Three-dimensional Laser-based Classification in Outdoor Environments

    Robotics research strives for deploying autonomous systems in populated environments, such as inner city traffic. Autonomous cars need a reliable collision avoidance, but also an object recognition to distinguish different classes of traffic participants. For both tasks, fast three-dimensional laser range sensors generating multiple accurate laser range scans per second, each consisting of a vast number of laser points, are often employed. In this thesis, we investigate and develop classification algorithms that allow us to automatically assign semantic labels to laser scans. We mainly face two challenges: (1) we have to ensure consistent and correct classification results and (2) we must efficiently process a vast number of laser points per scan. In consideration of these challenges, we cover both stages of classification -- the feature extraction from laser range scans and the classification model that maps from the features to semantic labels. As for the feature extraction, we contribute by thoroughly evaluating important state-of-the-art histogram descriptors. We investigate critical parameters of the descriptors and experimentally show for the first time that the classification performance can be significantly improved using a large support radius and a global reference frame. As for learning the classification model, we contribute with new algorithms that improve the classification efficiency and accuracy. Our first approach aims at deriving a consistent point-wise interpretation of the whole laser range scan. By combining efficient similarity-preserving hashing and multiple linear classifiers, we considerably improve the consistency of label assignments, requiring only minimal computational overhead compared to a single linear classifier. In the last part of the thesis, we aim at classifying objects represented by segments. We propose a novel hierarchical segmentation approach comprising multiple stages and a novel mixture classification model of multiple bag-of-words vocabularies. We demonstrate superior performance of both approaches compared to their single component counterparts using challenging real world datasets.Ziel des Forschungsbereichs Robotik ist der Einsatz autonomer Systeme in natürlichen Umgebungen, wie zum Beispiel innerstädtischem Verkehr. Autonome Fahrzeuge benötigen einerseits eine zuverlässige Kollisionsvermeidung und andererseits auch eine Objekterkennung zur Unterscheidung verschiedener Klassen von Verkehrsteilnehmern. Verwendung finden vorallem drei-dimensionale Laserentfernungssensoren, die mehrere präzise Laserentfernungsscans pro Sekunde erzeugen und jeder Scan besteht hierbei aus einer hohen Anzahl an Laserpunkten. In dieser Dissertation widmen wir uns der Untersuchung und Entwicklung neuartiger Klassifikationsverfahren zur automatischen Zuweisung von semantischen Objektklassen zu Laserpunkten. Hierbei begegnen wir hauptsächlich zwei Herausforderungen: (1) wir möchten konsistente und korrekte Klassifikationsergebnisse erreichen und (2) die immense Menge an Laserdaten effizient verarbeiten. Unter Berücksichtigung dieser Herausforderungen untersuchen wir beide Verarbeitungsschritte eines Klassifikationsverfahrens -- die Merkmalsextraktion unter Nutzung von Laserdaten und das eigentliche Klassifikationsmodell, welches die Merkmale auf semantische Objektklassen abbildet. Bezüglich der Merkmalsextraktion leisten wir ein Beitrag durch eine ausführliche Evaluation wichtiger Histogrammdeskriptoren. Wir untersuchen kritische Deskriptorparameter und zeigen zum ersten Mal, dass die Klassifikationsgüte unter Nutzung von großen Merkmalsradien und eines globalen Referenzrahmens signifikant gesteigert wird. Bezüglich des Lernens des Klassifikationsmodells, leisten wir Beiträge durch neue Algorithmen, welche die Effizienz und Genauigkeit der Klassifikation verbessern. In unserem ersten Ansatz möchten wir eine konsistente punktweise Interpretation des gesamten Laserscans erreichen. Zu diesem Zweck kombinieren wir eine ähnlichkeitserhaltende Hashfunktion und mehrere lineare Klassifikatoren und erreichen hierdurch eine erhebliche Verbesserung der Konsistenz der Klassenzuweisung bei minimalen zusätzlichen Aufwand im Vergleich zu einem einzelnen linearen Klassifikator. Im letzten Teil der Dissertation möchten wir Objekte, die als Segmente repräsentiert sind, klassifizieren. Wir stellen eine neuartiges hierarchisches Segmentierungsverfahren und ein neuartiges Klassifikationsmodell auf Basis einer Mixtur mehrerer bag-of-words Vokabulare vor. Wir demonstrieren unter Nutzung von praxisrelevanten Datensätzen, dass beide Ansätze im Vergleich zu ihren Entsprechungen aus einer einzelnen Komponente zu erheblichen Verbesserungen führen

    Design characteristics of a pipe crawling robot

    This thesis deals with the design characteristics of a pipe crawling vehicle which utilises a unique, innovative and patented drive system. The principle of the drive system is simple. That is, if a brush is inserted into a pipe and its bristles are swept back at an angle, then, it is easier to push the brush forwards through the pipe than it is to pull it backwards. Thus, if two brushes are interconnected by a reciprocating cylinder, then, by cycling the cylinder, it is possible for the vehicle to "crawl" through the pipe. The drive mechanism has two main advantages. The first is the ability of the bristles to deflect over or around obstacles, thus, the vehicles can be used in severely damaged pipes. Secondly, the drive mechanism is able to generate extremely high "grip" forces, thus, the vehicle has a high payload to weight ratio. This "simple" traction mechanism has subsequently been proven to be extremely capable in significantly hostile environments, for example, nuclear plants and sewers. The development of the vehicle has resulted in brushes being considered as "engineering" components. This thesis considers the forces present when a brush moves forward through a pipe, further, it also considers the forces present if the brush is required to grip the walls of the pipe. A "simple" cantilever model has been developed which predicts the force required to push a brush forwards through the pipe. A second model has been developed which predicts the forward to reverse or "slip" to "grip" ratio of a brush, for given functional conditions. This model is deemed satisfactory up to the onset of bristle buckling. The experimental program determined three factors, they were, the force required to load a brush into a pipe, the force required to push a brush forward through a pipe and the reverse force a brush could support prior to failure. It can be concluded that this vehicle, through its tractive capability arid environmental compliance, is able to traverse irregularly shaped pipes. Ultimately, this allows tooling to be transported and used at previously unobtainable positions within such pipes

    Fuzzy machine vision based inspection

    Machine vision system has been fostered to solve many realistic problems in various fields. Its role in achieving superior quality and productivity is of paramount importance. But, for such system to be attractive, it needs to be fast, accurate and cost-effective. This dissertation is based on a number of practical machine vision based inspection projects obtained from the automotive industry. It presents a collection of developed efficient fuzzy machine vision approaches endorsed with experimental results. It also covers the conceptual design, development and testing of various fuzzy machine vision based inspection approaches for different industrial applications. To assist in developing and evaluating the performance of the proposed approaches, several parts are tested under varying lighting conditions. This research deals with two important aspects of machine vision based inspection. In the first part, it concentrates on the topics of component detection and component orientation identification. The components used in this part are metal clips mounted on a dash panel frame that is installed in the door of trucks. Therefore, we propose a fuzzy machine vision based clip detection model and a fuzzy machine vision based clip orientation identification model to inspect the proper placement of clips on dash panels. Both models are efficient and fast in terms of accuracy and processing time. In the second part of the research, we are dealing with machined part defects such as broken edge, porosity and tool marks. The se defects occur on the surface of die cast aluminum automotive pump housings. As a result, an automated fuzzy machine vision based broken edge detection method, an efficient fuzzy machine vision based porosity detection technique and a neuro-fuzzy part classification model based on tool marks are developed. Computational results show that the proposed approaches are effective in yielding satisfactory results to the tested image databases. There are four main contributions to this work. The first contribution is the development of the concept of composite matrices in conjunction with XOR feature extractor using fuzzy subtractive clustering for clip detection. The second contribution is about a proposed model based on grouping and counting pixels in pre-selective areas which tracks pixel colors in separated RGB channels to determine whether the orientation of the clip is acceptable or not. The construction of three novel edge based features embedded in fuzzy C-means clustering for broken edge detection marks the third contribution. At last, the fourth contribution presents the core of porosity candidates concept and its correlation with twelve developed matrices. This, in turn, results in the development of five different features used in our fuzzy machine vision based porosity detection approach

    The Office of Exploration (OEXP) at NASA has been tasked with defining and recommending alternatives for an early 1990's national decision on a focused program of manned exploration of the Solar System. The Mission analysis and System Engineering (MASE) group, which is managed by the Exploration Studies Office at the Johnson Space Center, is responsible for coordinating the technical studies necessary for accomplishing such a task. This technical report, produced by the MASE, describes the process used to conduct exploration studies and discusses the mission developed in a case study approach. The four case studies developed in FY88 include: (1) a manned expedition to PHOBOS; (2) a manned expedition to MARS; (3) a lunar surface observatory; and a lunar outpost to early Mars evolution. The final outcome of this effort is a set of programmatic and technical conclusions and recommendations for the following year's work
