    Design and implementation of a low-cost home automation and monitoring IoT system using message que telemetry transport protocol : South Africa context

    Abstract: Home automation is a fast and growing industry in South Africa, because in recent years almost everything home and office electrical and electronics appliances are been connected to the internet and human mobile devices. There is an increase in demand of time from the working class and hence the busy time schedule. This necessitate the home automation and monitoring systems which enable homeowners to remotely monitor and control appliances in their houses and offices without being present in the device physical location. The designed system host the integrated intelligent unit functionalities that enable communication between the controller and remote end-user units of the system. It is important to ensure that home automation systems have a low cost to enable user adoption. Home automation systems should also incorporate latest technology, portability and also have internet connectivity capabilities. This paper proposes a design of low-cost home automation system that incorporates internet access and delivers internet of things (IoT) connectivity services in a smart home application. The designed system provides access to an internet connected home automation systems. The system is accessible via mobile devices and provides remote access to home appliances. In conclusion, during measurement and testing of the designed system, device full duplex connection for one round trip was less that 5seconds to relay a message packet between the transmitter subscriber device and the publisher receiver device.     Devices, Information, and People: Abstracting the Internet of Things for End-User Personalization

    Nowadays, end users can take advantage of end-user development platforms to personalize the Internet of Things. These platforms typically adopt a vendor-centric abstraction, by letting users to customize each of their smart device and/or online service through different trigger-action rules. Despite the popularity of such an approach, several research challenges in this domain are still underexplored. Which "things" would users personalize, and in which contexts? Are there any other effective abstractions besides the vendor-centric one? Would users adopt different abstractions in different contexts? To answer these questions, we report on the results of a 1-week-long diary study during which 24 participants noted down trigger-action rules arising during their daily activities. Results show that users would adopt multiple abstractions by personalizing devices, information, and people-related behaviors where the individual is at the center of the interaction. We found, in particular, that the adopted abstraction may depend on different factors, ranging from the user profile to the context in which the personalization is introduced. While users are inclined to personalize physical objects in the home, for example, they often go "beyond devices" in the city, where they are more interested in the underlying information.     The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers.     An innovative mobile application for construction programme managers

    Construction programme management is a complex and information-intensive environment. The construction programme management team requires access to construction information in real-time and when needed. The current increasing use of mobile devices offers an opportunity to meet this need. The efficient management of construction programmes is one of the major factors for improving stakeholders’ satisfaction. An innovative tool is needed in accessing the right information at the right time, especially when spontaneous and urgent decision-making is needed. To this end, the innovative use of a mobile device in delivering information and services to the management team in real-time and based on their current context offers significant benefits. This paper discusses context-aware computing, the enabling technologies for geolocation and the development of a prototype, mobile, context-aware application for construction programme management. The prototype system developed is based on the findings from an earlier study of user requirements which showed that the ability to provide relevant information and services at an appropriate time and at the most appropriate location has the potential to improve the monitoring and control of construction programmes. The prototype system demonstrates the provision of context-specific information and services to construction programme managers using a mobile device. The benefits and limitations of the proposed approach are discussed and conclusions drawn about the potential impact of enhanced information delivery for the efficiency of the construction programme managers
