    Trademarks, Certification Marks and Technical Standards

    The names of many technical standards such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and DVD have become household terms known throughout the developed world. This chapter describes different approaches that have been taken with respect to the naming and legal protection of technical standards, ranging from those that are wholly unregulated to those that are administered under strict certification and compliance regimes. It concludes by questioning the need for aggressive protection of marks that exist largely to inform consumers about technical product features rather than the source of standards themselves

    Integrating gamification to modern web fitness services

    Gamification has been widely applied to information technologies industry, especially to fields where motivation and user engagement are difficult to maintain. Thus, many fitness providers have integrated gamification to their own services. However, due to lacking unified gamification convention in Fitness convention, choosing what game-like elements to integrate seems like an impossible task. In addition, there is no valid guideline available for integrating gamification to web fitness application for the industry to follow. Aiming at these questions this thesis summarizes thirteen most commonly used game-like elements in different web fitness services, and generates guidelines for implementing gamified web fitness services. Results from validating the guidelines to three example fitness services indicate promising percentages of gamification integration, although future work on the topic would significantly increase the validity of the guidelines

    Recentemente, tem-se assistido à utilização de ambientes imersivos 3D em vários domínios tais como: actividades empresariais, educativas, lúdicas, entre outras devido à expansão do Second Life. A finalidade deste conceito é oferecer aos utilizadores um acesso alternativo a valências existentes no mundo real, a partir de um computador ligado à Internet. Uma aplicação prática pode ser a sua utilização em laboratórios remotos, com a finalidade de controlar remotamente instrumentos de medição, a partir de um ambiente imersivo. Para isso, o mesmo deve permitir a construção de um laboratório virtual e respectivos instrumentos, também virtuais. Este tipo de solução é viável, devido a existirem dispositivos com interfaces de acesso remoto, e ambientes 3D desenvolvidos em linguagens de programação que possuem bibliotecas de código para protocolos de redes de computadores. A finalidade deste trabalho é desenvolver uma metodologia de acesso remoto, a instrumentos de medição em laboratórios de electricidade e electrónica, usando ambientes imersivos 3D. Como caso de estudo, o instrumento utilizado é um multímetro, controlado remotamente a partir de uma reprodução num mundo virtual, construído no ambiente 3D Open Wonderland. Nessa reprodução virtual, numa primeira fase, só serão disponibilizadas para medição, um conjunto limitado das variáveis eléctricas passíveis de medir através do multímetro seleccionado.Recently, 3D immersive environments have been spreading through several domains, such as: enterprise activities, education, entertaining, etc., due to the growth of Second Life. This concept goal is provide an alternative access to users in order to use existing facilities in real world, from a computer connected to the Internet. It can be applied to make remote laboratories accessible from immersive environments, in order to remotely control measuring instruments. The 3D environment should allow the virtual laboratory and its virtual instruments developing. This type of solution is practicable, due to measuring devices with remote access interfaces availability, and 3D environments developed in programming languages which provide libraries including code for network protocols features. This work goal is to develop a remote access methodology to measuring instruments in an electricity and electronics laboratory, using 3D immersive environments. A multimeter is used as a case study. It is remotely controlled from a virtual reproduction in a virtual world, built in the Open Wonderland 3D environment. In that reproduction and in a first stage, it will only be available for measuring, a limited set of electrical variables provided by the selected multimeter

    Engaging Gen Z: Toward a Paracletic Leadership Framework

    Today’s church faces a difficult reality: its effectiveness in reaching Generation Z is declining, while prospects of the group’s disaffiliation from the church are rising. In proposing a framework for effective engagement with Generation Z in a post-Christian, postmodern context, this dissertation argues that the generation’s desire for relational and identity-transforming leadership renders current growth- and success-driven leadership models ineffective and invites a new, theologically based, actionable/practical paracletic leadership paradigm. Chapter 1 outlines the challenges and opportunities facing leaders where Gen Z is concerned. Chapter 2 examines Gen Z’s identity as revealed in its spiritual and social cultures and its defining characteristics, which include its diversity, sexual and gender fluidity, anxiety and mental anguish, and a relational disconnect heightened by its “bonding” with algorithms. Chapter 3 explores the biblical and theological foundations of paracletic leadership in relation to the Spirit’s activity, the topics of biblical pneumatology in the Old and New Testaments, Jesus’s discourse on the Spirit, and the Jesus model of the paracletic leader. Chapter 4 then establishes Gen Z’s aforementioned leadership preferences; surveys early church leadership; assesses the Patristics’ pastoral leadership perspectives, comparing them to contemporary trends in church leadership; and considers how the shift might contribute to Gen Z’s disengagement from the church. Finally, Chapter 5 proposes a conceptual framework of paracletic leadership that recognizes the historical procession into which today’s leader enters, the side-by-side nature of paracletic leadership, and the necessary synergy of the divine and human that engages Gen Z and guides them toward transformation in Christ. The chapter then integrates the concept of paracletic leadership with Robert E. and Ryan W. Quinn’s fundamental state of leadership, thus providing a practical application for serving and engaging Generation Z

    This book: ● lays out the objectives of WS 166, Gender, Race, and Class, taught in the Women’s and Gender Studies Department, Pace University, New York City campus; ● provides a structure for any course addressing intersectionality, feminism, and oppression; ● describes the framework of intersectionality, which examines societal issues by analyzing the interlocking systems of oppression that shape people’s lives; ● argues for a transnational application of intersectionality that also centers U.S. Black feminists’ contributions to understanding oppression; ● includes journal articles, TED Talks, and class exercises that are generally accessible for most students or interested readers without previous exposure to these topics. We designed this book to illustrate that intersectionality is a powerful tool for learning about and addressing injustice and inequity.
