Aerospace Manufacturing Industry: A Simulation-Based Decision Support Framework for the Scheduling of Complex Hoist Lines
The hoist scheduling problem is a critical issue in the design and control of Automated Manufacturing Systems. To deal with the major complexities appearing in such problem, this work introduces an advanced simulation model to represent the short-term scheduling of complex hoist lines. The aim is to find the best jobs schedule that minimizing the makespan while maximizing throughput with no defective outputs. Several hard constraints are considered in the model: single shared hoist, heterogeneous recipes, eventual recycles flows, and no buffers between workstations. Different heuristic-based strategies are incorporated into the computer model in order to improve the solutions generated over time. The alternative solutions can be quickly evaluated by using a graphical user interface developed together with the simulation model.Fil: Basán, Natalia Paola. Tag-Cloud Drawing: Algorithms for Cloud Visualization
Tag clouds provide an aggregate of tag-usage statistics. They are typically
sent as in-line HTML to browsers. However, display mechanisms suited for
ordinary text are not ideal for tags, because font sizes may vary widely on a
line. As well, the typical layout does not account for relationships that may
be known between tags. This paper presents models and algorithms to improve the
display of tag clouds that consist of in-line HTML, as well as algorithms that
use nested tables to achieve a more general 2-dimensional layout in which tag
relationships are considered. The first algorithms leverage prior work in
typesetting and rectangle packing, whereas the second group of algorithms
leverage prior work in Electronic Design Automation. Experiments show our
algorithms can be efficiently implemented and perform well.Comment: To appear in proceedings of Tagging and Metadata for Social

State of the Art in the Optimisation of Wind Turbine Performance Using CFD
Wind energy has received increasing attention in recent years due to its sustainability and geographically wide availability. The efficiency of wind energy utilisation highly depends on the performance of wind turbines, which convert the kinetic energy in wind into electrical energy. In order to optimise wind turbine performance and reduce the cost of next-generation wind turbines, it is crucial to have a view of the state of the art in the key aspects on the performance optimisation of wind turbines using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which has attracted enormous interest in the development of next-generation wind turbines in recent years. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art progress on optimisation of wind turbine performance using CFD, reviewing the objective functions to judge the performance of wind turbine, CFD approaches applied in the simulation of wind turbines and optimisation algorithms for wind turbine performance. This paper has been written for both researchers new to this research area by summarising underlying theory whilst presenting a comprehensive review on the up-to-date studies, and experts in the field of study by collecting a comprehensive list of related references where the details of computational methods that have been employed lately can be obtained
Key Challenges and Opportunities in Hull Form Design Optimisation for Marine and Offshore Applications
New environmental regulations and volatile fuel
prices have resulted in an ever-increasing need for reduction
in carbon emission and fuel consumption. Designs of marine
and offshore vessels are more demanding with complex
operating requirements and oil and gas exploration
venturing into deeper waters and hasher environments.
Combinations of these factors have led to the need to
optimise the design of the hull for the marine and offshore
industry. The contribution of this paper is threefold. Firstly,
the paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-ofthe-
art techniques in hull form design. Specifically, it
analyses geometry modelling, shape transformation,
optimisation and performance evaluation. Strengths and
weaknesses of existing solutions are also discussed.
Secondly, key challenges of hull form optimisation specific
to the design of marine and offshore vessels are identified
and analysed. Thirdly, future trends in performing hull
form design optimisation are investigated and possible
solutions proposed. A case study on the design optimisation
of bulbous bow for passenger ferry vessel to reduce wavemaking
resistance is presented using NAPA software.
Lastly, main issues and challenges are discussed to stimulate
further ideas on future developments in this area, including
the use of parallel computing and machine intelligence
Facility layout problem: Bibliometric and benchmarking analysis
Facility layout problem is related to the location of departments in a facility area, with the aim of determining the most effective configuration. Researches based on different approaches have been published in the last six decades and, to prove the effectiveness of the results obtained, several instances have been developed. This paper presents a general overview on the extant literature on facility layout problems in order to identify the main research trends and propose future research questions. Firstly, in order to give the reader an overview of the literature, a bibliometric analysis is presented. Then, a clusterization of the papers referred to the main instances reported in literature was carried out in order to create a database that can be a useful tool in the benchmarking procedure for researchers that would approach this kind of problems
Automated construction of evolutionary algorithm operators for the bi-objective water distribution network design problem using a genetic programming based hyper-heuristic approach
The water distribution network (WDN) design problem is primarily concerned with finding the optimal pipe sizes that provide the best service for minimal cost; a problem of continuing importance both in the UK and internationally. Consequently, many methods for solving this problem have been proposed in the literature, often using tailored, hand-crafted approaches to more effectively optimise this difficult problem. In this paper we investigate a novel hyper-heuristic approach that uses genetic programming (GP) to evolve mutation operators for evolutionary algorithms (EAs) which are specialised for a bi-objective formulation of the WDN design problem (minimising WDN cost and head deficit). Once generated, the evolved operators can then be used ad infinitum in any EA on any WDN to improve performance. A novel multi-objective method is demonstrated that evolves a set of mutation operators for one training WDN. The best operators are evaluated in detail by applying them to three test networks of varying complexity. An experiment is conducted in which 83 operators are evolved. The best 10 are examined in detail. One operator, GP1, is shown to be especially effective and incorporates interesting domain-specific learning (pipe smoothing) while GP5 demonstrates the ability of the method to find known, well-used operators like a Gaussian. © IWA Publishing 2014J.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)Mouchel Ltd
