Nonlinear observers for predicting state-of-charge and state-of-health of lead-acid batteries for hybrid-electric vehicles
Abstract—This paper describes the application of state-estimation
techniques for the real-time prediction of the state-of-charge
(SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) of lead-acid cells. Specifically,
approaches based on the well-known Kalman Filter (KF) and
Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), are presented, using a generic
cell model, to provide correction for offset, drift, and long-term
state divergence—an unfortunate feature of more traditional
coulomb-counting techniques. The underlying dynamic behavior
of each cell is modeled using two capacitors (bulk and surface) and
three resistors (terminal, surface, and end), from which the SoC
is determined from the voltage present on the bulk capacitor. Although
the structure of the model has been previously reported for
describing the characteristics of lithium-ion cells, here it is shown
to also provide an alternative to commonly employed models of
lead-acid cells when used in conjunction with a KF to estimate
SoC and an EKF to predict state-of-health (SoH). Measurements
using real-time road data are used to compare the performance
of conventional integration-based methods for estimating SoC
with those predicted from the presented state estimation schemes.
Results show that the proposed methodologies are superior to
more traditional techniques, with accuracy in determining the
SoC within 2% being demonstrated. Moreover, by accounting
for the nonlinearities present within the dynamic cell model, the
application of an EKF is shown to provide verifiable indications of
SoH of the cell pack

Stimulating uncertainty: Amplifying the quantum vacuum with superconducting circuits
The ability to generate particles from the quantum vacuum is one of the most
profound consequences of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Although the
significance of vacuum fluctuations can be seen throughout physics, the
experimental realization of vacuum amplification effects has until now been
limited to a few cases. Superconducting circuit devices, driven by the goal to
achieve a viable quantum computer, have been used in the experimental
demonstration of the dynamical Casimir effect, and may soon be able to realize
the elusive verification of analogue Hawking radiation. This article describes
several mechanisms for generating photons from the quantum vacuum and
emphasizes their connection to the well-known parametric amplifier from quantum
optics. Discussed in detail is the possible realization of each mechanism, or
its analogue, in superconducting circuit systems. The ability to selectively
engineer these circuit devices highlights the relationship between the various

NP-complete Problems and Physical Reality
Can NP-complete problems be solved efficiently in the physical universe? I
survey proposals including soap bubbles, protein folding, quantum computing,
quantum advice, quantum adiabatic algorithms, quantum-mechanical
nonlinearities, hidden variables, relativistic time dilation, analog computing,
Malament-Hogarth spacetimes, quantum gravity, closed timelike curves, and
"anthropic computing." The section on soap bubbles even includes some
"experimental" results. While I do not believe that any of the proposals will
let us solve NP-complete problems efficiently, I argue that by studying them,

Robust Observer-Based Output Feedback Control of a Nonlinear Time-Varying System
A class of time-varying systems can be quadratically stabilized with satisfactory performance by a modified time-invariant-based observer. The modified observer driven by the additional adaptation forces with static correction gains is used to estimate the time-varying system states. Under the frame of quadratic stability, the closed-loop systems satisfying induced norm bounded performance criterion are exponentially stabilized while the states are exponentially approaching by the modified observer. This paper deals with the time-varying systems that can be characterized as the multiplicative type of time-invariant and time-varying parts. The time-invariant part is then used to construct the modified observer with additional driving forces, which are ready to adjust time-varying effect coming from the measured outputs feeding into the modified observer. The determination of the adaptation forces can be derived from the minimization of the cost of error dynamics with modified least-squares algorithms. The synthesis of control and observer static correction gains are also demonstrated. How Does the Cerebral Cortex Work? Developement, Learning, Attention, and 3D Vision by Laminar Circuits of Visual Cortex
A key goal of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience is to link brain mechanisms to behavioral functions. The present article describes recent progress towards explaining how the visual cortex sees. Visual cortex, like many parts of perceptual and cognitive neocortex, is organized into six main layers of cells, as well as characteristic sub-lamina. Here it is proposed how these layered circuits help to realize the processes of developement, learning, perceptual grouping, attention, and 3D vision through a combination of bottom-up, horizontal, and top-down interactions. A key theme is that the mechanisms which enable developement and learning to occur in a stable way imply properties of adult behavior. These results thus begin to unify three fields: infant cortical developement, adult cortical neurophysiology and anatomy, and adult visual perception.
