    Feedback control of spin systems

    The feedback stabilization problem for ensembles of coupled spin 1/2 systems is discussed from a control theoretic perspective. The noninvasive nature of the bulk measurement allows for a fully unitary and deterministic closed loop. The Lyapunov-based feedback design presented does not require spins that are selectively addressable. With this method, it is possible to obtain control inputs also for difficult tasks, like suppressing undesired couplings in identical spin systems.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure

    Disturbance Observer has been one of the most widely used robust control tools since it was proposed in 1983. This paper introduces the origins of Disturbance Observer and presents a survey of the major results on Disturbance Observer-based robust control in the last thirty-five years. Furthermore, it explains the analysis and synthesis techniques of Disturbance Observer-based robust control for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework.     An exploratory investigation of the flight dynamics effects of rotor rpm variations and rotor state feedback in hover

    This paper presents the results of an analytical study conducted to investigate airframe/engine interface dynamics, and the influence of rotor speed variations on the flight dynamics of the helicopter in hover, and to explore the potential benefits of using rotor states as additional feedback signals in the flight control system. The analytical investigation required the development of a parametric high-order helicopter hover model, which included heave/yaw body motion, the rotor speed degree of freedom, rotor blade motion in flapping and lead-lag, inflow dynamics, a drive train model with a flexible rotor shaft, and an engine/rpm governor. First, the model was used to gain insight into the engine/drive train/rotor system dynamics and to obtain an improved simple formula for easy estimation of the dominant first torsional mode, which is important in the dynamic integration of the engine and airframe system. Then, a linearized version of the model was used to investigate the effects of rotor speed variations and rotor state feedback on helicopter flight dynamics. Results show that, by including rotor speed variations, the effective vertical damping decreases significantly from that calculated with a constant speed assumption, thereby providing a better correlation with flight test data. Higher closed-loop bandwidths appear to be more readily achievable with rotor state feedback. The results also indicate that both aircraft and rotor flapping responses to gust disturbance are significantly attenuated when rotor state feedback is used

    The NASA Ames and Lewis Research Centers, in conjunction with the Army Research and Technology Laboratories, have initiated and partially completed a joint research program focused on improving the performance, maneuverability, and operating characteristics of rotorcraft by integrating the flight and propulsion controls. The background of the program, its supporting programs, its goals and objectives, and an approach to accomplish them are discussed. Results of the modern control governor design of the General Electric T700 engine and the Rotorcraft Integrated Flight-Propulsion Control Study, which were key elements of the program, are also presented

    A numerical study on active control for tiltrotor whirl flutter stability augmentation

    The use of active control to augment whirl flutter stability of tiltrotor aircraft is studied by means of a multibody simulation. The numerical model is based on a 1/5 scale semi-span aeroelastic wind tunnel model of a generic tiltrotor concept and possesses a gimballed, stiff-in-plane rotor that is windmilling. A single-input single-output controller and two types of multi-input multi-output algorithms, Linear Quadratic Gaussian Control and Generalized Predictive Control, are studied. They are using measured wing deflections in order to calculate appropriate swashplate input. Results on the closed-loop behavior of three wing and two gimbal natural modes are given. Robustness analyses with respect to major parameters like wing natural frequencies or structural damping are also briefly discussed. The rotor shear force is shown in the uncontrolled condition and in presence of a controller in order to illustrate the whirl flutter mechanism. The single-input single-output controller yielded substantial gain in stability and turned out to be most suitable for industrial application, whereas the Linear Quadratic Gaussian Regulator yielded even higher damping and still had good robustness characteristics

    Output Consensus Control for Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems

    We study distributed output feedback control of a heterogeneous multi-agent system (MAS), consisting of N different continuous-time linear dynamical systems. For achieving output consensus, a virtual reference model is assumed to generate the desired trajectory for which the MAS is required to track and synchronize. A full information (FI) protocol is assumed for consensus control. This protocol includes information exchange with the feed-forward signals. In this dissertation we study two different kinds of consensus problems. First, we study the consensus control over the topology involving time delays and prove that consensus is independent of delay lengths. Second, we study the consensus under communication constraints. In contrast to the existing work, the reference trajectory is transmitted to only one or a few agents and no local reference models are employed in the feedback controllers thereby eliminating synchronization of the local reference models. Both significantly lower the communication overhead. In addition, our study is focused on the case when the available output measurements contain only relative information from the neighboring agents and reference signal. Conditions are derived for the existence of distributed output feedback control protocols, and solutions are proposed to synthesize the stabilizing and consensus control protocol over a given connected digraph. It is shown that the H-inf loop shaping and LQG/LTR techniques from robust control can be directly applied to design the consensus output feedback control protocol. The results in this dissertation complement the existing ones, and are illustrated by a numerical example. The MAS approach developed in this dissertation is then applied to the development of autonomous aircraft traffic control system. The development of such systems have already started to replace the current clearance-based operations to trajectory based operations. Such systems will help to reduce human errors, increase efficiency, provide safe flight path, and improve the performance of the future flight
