    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     Robust fault estimation for stochastic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems

    Nowadays, industrial plants are calling for high-performance fault diagnosis techniques to meet stringent requirements on system availability and safety in the event of component failures. This paper deals with robust fault estimation problems for stochastic nonlinear systems subject to faults and unknown inputs relying on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models. Augmented approach jointly with unknown input observers for stochastic Takagi-Sugeno models is exploited here, which allows one to estimate both considered faults and full system states robustly. The considered unknown inputs can be either completely decoupled or partially decoupled by observers. For the un-decoupled part of unknown inputs, which still influence error dynamics, stochastic input-to-state stability properties are applied to take nonzero inputs into account and sufficient conditions are achieved to guarantee bounded estimation errors under bounded unknown inputs. Linear matrix inequalities are employed to compute gain matrices of the observer, leading to stochastic input-to-state-stable error dynamics and optimization of the estimation performances against un-decoupled unknown inputs. Finally, simulation on wind turbine benchmark model is applied to validate the performances of the suggested fault reconstruction methodologies

    Robust fault diagnosis of proton exchange membrane fuel cells using a Takagi-Sugeno interval observer approach

    In this paper, the problem of robust fault diagnosis of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is addressed by introducing the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) interval observers that consider uncertainty in a bounded context, adapting TS observers to the so-called interval approach. Design conditions for the TS interval observer based on regional pole placement are also introduced to guarantee the fault detection and isolation (FDI) performance. The fault detection test is based on checking the consistency between the measurements and the output estimations provided by the TS observers. In presence of bounded uncertainty, this check relies on determining if all the measurements lie inside their corresponding estimated interval bounds. When a fault is detected, the measurements that are inconsistent with their corresponding estimations are annotated and a fault isolation procedure is triggered. By using the theoretical fault signature matrix (FSM), which summarizes the effects of the different faults on the available residuals, the fault is isolated by means of a logic reasoning that takes into account the bounded uncertainty, and if the number of candidate faults is more than one, a correlation analysis is used to obtain the most likely fault candidate.     Data-driven techniques for the fault diagnosis of a wind turbine benchmark

    This paper deals with the fault diagnosis of wind turbines and investigates viable solutions to the problem of earlier fault detection and isolation. The design of the fault indicator, i.e., the fault estimate, involves data-driven approaches, as they can represent effective tools for coping with poor analytical knowledge of the system dynamics, together with noise and disturbances. In particular, the proposed data-driven solutions rely on fuzzy systems and neural networks that are used to describe the strongly nonlinear relationships between measurement and faults. The chosen architectures rely on nonlinear autoregressive models with exogenous input, as they can represent the dynamic evolution of the system along time. The developed fault diagnosis schemes are tested by means of a high-fidelity benchmark model that simulates the normal and the faulty behaviour of a wind turbine. The achieved performances are also compared with those of other model-based strategies from the related literature.     Active fault-tolerant control of nonlinear systems with wind turbine application

    The thesis concerns the theoretical development of Active Fault-Tolerant Control (AFTC) methods for nonlinear system via T-S multiple-modelling approach. The thesis adopted the estimation and compensation approach to AFTC within a tracking control framework. In this framework, the thesis considers several approaches to robust T-S fuzzy control and T-S fuzzy estimation: T-S fuzzy proportional multiple integral observer (PMIO); T-S fuzzy proportional-proportional integral observer (PPIO); T-S fuzzy virtual sensor (VS) based AFTC; T-S fuzzy Dynamic Output Feedback Control TSDOFC; T-S observer-based feedback control; Sliding Mode Control (SMC). The theoretical concepts have been applied to an offshore wind turbine (OWT) application study. The key developments that present in this thesis are:• The development of three active Fault Tolerant Tracking Control (FTTC) strategies for nonlinear systems described via T-S fuzzy inference modelling. The proposals combine the use of Linear Reference Model Fuzzy Control (LRMFC) with either the estimation and compensation concept or the control reconfiguration concept.• The development of T-S fuzzy observer-based state estimate fuzzy control strategy for nonlinear systems. The developed strategy has the capability to tolerate simultaneous actuator and sensor faults within tracking and regulating control framework. Additionally, a proposal to recover the Separation Principle has also been developed via the use of TSDOFC within the FTTC framework.• The proposals of two FTTC strategies based on the estimation and compensation concept for sustainable OWTs control. The proposals have introduced a significant attribute to the literature of sustainable OWTs control via (1) Obviating the need for Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) unit, (2) Providing useful information to evaluate fault severity via the fault estimation signals.• The development of FTTC architecture for OWTs that combines the use of TSDOFC and a form of cascaded observers (cascaded analytical redundancy). This architecture is proposed in order to ensure the robustness of both the TSDOFC and the EWS estimator against the generator and rotor speed sensor faults.• A sliding mode baseline controller has been proposed within three FTTC strategies for sustainable OWTs control. The proposals utilise the inherent robustness of the SMC to tolerate some matched faults without the need for analytical redundancy. Following this, the combination of SMC and estimation and compensation framework proposed to ensure the close-loop system robustness to various faults.• Within the framework of the developed T-S fuzzy based FTTC strategies, a new perspective to reduce the T-S fuzzy control design conservatism problem has been proposed via the use of different control techniques that demand less design constraints. Moreover, within the SMC based FTTC, an investigation is given to demonstrate the SMC robustness against a wider than usual set of faults is enhanced via designing the sliding surface with minimum dimension of the feedback signals

    Soft Computing Techniques and Their Applications in Intel-ligent Industrial Control Systems: A Survey

    Soft computing involves a series of methods that are compatible with imprecise information and complex human cognition. In the face of industrial control problems, soft computing techniques show strong intelligence, robustness and cost-effectiveness. This study dedicates to providing a survey on soft computing techniques and their applications in industrial control systems. The methodologies of soft computing are mainly classified in terms of fuzzy logic, neural computing, and genetic algorithms. The challenges surrounding modern industrial control systems are summarized based on the difficulties in information acquisition, the difficulties in modeling control rules, the difficulties in control system optimization, and the requirements for robustness. Then, this study reviews soft-computing-related achievements that have been developed to tackle these challenges. Afterwards, we present a retrospect of practical industrial control applications in the fields including transportation, intelligent machines, process industry as well as energy engineering. Finally, future research directions are discussed from different perspectives. This study demonstrates that soft computing methods can endow industry control processes with many merits, thus having great application potential. It is hoped that this survey can serve as a reference and provide convenience for scholars and practitioners in the fields of industrial control and computer science

    Fault Diagnosis Techniques for a Wind Turbine System

    The fault diagnosis and prognosis of wind turbine systems represent a challenging issue, thus justifying the research topics developed in this work with application to safety-critical systems. Therefore, this chapter addresses these research issues and demonstrates viable techniques of fault diagnosis and condition monitoring. To this aim, the design of the so-called fault detector relies on its estimate, which involves data-driven methods, as they result effective methods for managing partial information of the system dynamics, together with errors, model-reality mismatch and disturbance effects. In particular, the considered data-driven strategies use fuzzy systems and neural networks, which are employed to establish non-linear dynamic links between measurements and faults. The selected prototypes are based on non-linear autoregressive with exogenous input descriptions, since they are able to approximate non-linear dynamic functions with arbitrary degree of accuracy. The capabilities of the designed fault diagnosis schemes are verified via a high-fidelity simulator, which describes the normal and the faulty behaviour of a wind turbine plant. Finally, the robustness and the reliability features of the proposed methods are validated in the presence of uncertainty and disturbance implemented in the wind turbine simulator

    Upravljanje otporno na kvarove asinkronog motora zasnovano na deskriptorskom observeru

    This paper presents an active Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) strategy for induction motor (IM) that ensures Field Oriented Control (FOC) and offset the effect of the sensor faults despite of the load torque disturbance. The proposed approach uses a fuzzy descriptor approach to estimate simultaneously the system state and the sensor fault. The physical model of IM is approximated by the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy technique in the synchronous d-q rotating frame with field-oriented control strategy. The stability conditions are analyzed using Lyapunov theory. The controller and observers gains are calculated by solving a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy have been illustrated in simulation and experimental results.U ovom radu je predstavljena strategija upravljanja otpornog na kvarove za asinkroni motor koja omogućuje vektorsko upravljanje bez pogreške uslijed kvara senzora i postojećeg poremećaja momenta tereta. Predloženi pristup koristi neizraziti deskriptor za estimaciju stanja sustava i kvara senzora. Fizikalni model asinkronog motora s vektorskim upravljanjem aproksimiran je korištenjem Takagi-Sugeno modela u rotirajućem d-q koordinatnom sustavu. Uvjeti stabilnosti analizirani us korištenjem Ljapunovljeve teorije. Konstante pojačanja regulatora i obzervera su izračunati rješavanjem skupa linearnih matričnih nejednadžbi. Učinkovitost predložene strategije je ilustrirana simulacijskim i eksperimentalnim rezultatima
