    Optimal co-design of control, scheduling and routing in multi-hop control networks

    A Multi-hop Control Network consists of a plant where the communication between sensors, actuators and computational units is supported by a (wireless) multi-hop communication network, and data flow is performed using scheduling and routing of sensing and actuation data. Given a SISO LTI plant, we will address the problem of co-designing a digital controller and the network parameters (scheduling and routing) in order to guarantee stability and maximize a performance metric on the transient response to a step input, with constraints on the control effort, on the output overshoot and on the bandwidth of the communication channel. We show that the above optimization problem is a polynomial optimization problem, which is generally NP-hard. We provide sufficient conditions on the network topology, scheduling and routing such that it is computationally feasible, namely such that it reduces to a convex optimization problem.Comment: 51st IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2012.     Testability is an important quality attribute of software, especially for critical systems such as avionics, medical, and automotive. Improvement in the early testability of software architecture, the first artifact of the software system, will help reduce issues and costs later in the development process. AADL, an architecture analysis description language suitable for critical embedded, real-time systems, can be used for design documentation, analysis and code generation. Because the capability of AADL can be extended, it is possible to add new analyses to its core language. Tools such as the Open Source AADL Tool Environment (OSATE) provide plugins for processing AADL models. Although adding new plugins in OSATE extends AADL, there currently exists no AADL extension for testability measurement. The purpose of this thesis is to propose such a method to measure the testability of AADL models as well as to develop a testability plugin in OSATE. Much research has been conducted on testability of hardware, software and embedded systems, resulting in several approaches for measuring this quality attribute. Among them, the approach measuring testability as a product of controllability and observability using information transfer graph (ITG) is the most applicable for measuring the testability of AADL models. This thesis proposes a method applying this approach to AADL models. A complete testability measure plugin for OSATE was developed based on this approach and detailed examples are given in this thesis to demonstrate its applicability

    A survey of evaluation platforms for ad hoc routing protocols: a resilience perspective

    Routing protocols allow for the spontaneous formation of wireless multi-hop networks without dedicated infrastructure, also known as ad hoc networks. Despite significant technological advances, difficulties associated with the evaluation of ad hoc routing protocols under realistic conditions, still hamper their maturation and significant roll out in real world deployments. In particular, the resilience evaluation of ad hoc routing protocols is essential to determine their ability of keeping the routing service working despite the presence of changes, such as accidental faults or malicious ones (attacks). However, the resilience dimension is not always addressed by the evaluation platforms that are in charge of assessing these routing protocols. In this paper, we provide a survey covering current state-of-the-art evaluation platforms in the domain of ad hoc routing protocols paying special attention to the resilience dimension. The goal is threefold. First, we identify the most representative evaluation platforms and the routing protocols they have evaluated. Then, we analyse the experimental methodologies followed by such evaluation platforms.     Review of selection criteria for sensor and actuator configurations suitable for internal combustion engines

    This literature review considers the problem of finding a suitable configuration of sensors and actuators for the control of an internal combustion engine. It takes a look at the methods, algorithms, processes, metrics, applications, research groups and patents relevant for this topic. Several formal metric have been proposed, but practical use remains limited. Maximal information criteria are theoretically optimal for selecting sensors, but hard to apply to a system as complex and nonlinear as an engine. Thus, we reviewed methods applied to neighboring fields including nonlinear systems and non-minimal phase systems. Furthermore, the closed loop nature of control means that information is not the only consideration, and speed, stability and robustness have to be considered. The optimal use of sensor information also requires the use of models, observers, state estimators or virtual sensors, and practical acceptance of these remains limited. Simple control metrics such as conditioning number are popular, mostly because they need fewer assumptions than closed-loop metrics, which require a full plant, disturbance and goal model. Overall, no clear consensus can be found on the choice of metrics to define optimal control configurations, with physical measures, linear algebra metrics and modern control metrics all being used. Genetic algorithms and multi-criterial optimisation were identified as the most widely used methods for optimal sensor selection, although addressing the dimensionality and complexity of formulating the problem remains a challenge. This review does present a number of different successful approaches for specific applications domains, some of which may be applicable to diesel engines and other automotive applications. For a thorough treatment, non-linear dynamics and uncertainties need to be considered together, which requires sophisticated (non-Gaussian) stochastic models to establish the value of a control architecture

    Guaranteed passive parameterized macromodeling by using Sylvester state-space realizations

    A novel state-space realization for parameterized macromodeling is proposed in this paper. A judicious choice of the state-space realization is required in order to account for the assumed smoothness of the state-space matrices with respect to the design parameters. This technique is used in combination with suitable interpolation schemes to interpolate a set of state-space matrices, and hence the poles and residues indirectly, in order to build accurate parameterized macromodels. The key points of the novel state-space realizations are the choice of a proper pivot matrix and a well-conditioned solution of a Sylvester equation. Stability and passivity are guaranteed by construction over the design space of interest. Pertinent numerical examples validate the proposed Sylvester realization for parameterized macromodeling
