Modeling and Reasoning over Distributed Systems using Aspect-Oriented Graph Grammars
Aspect-orientation is a relatively new paradigm that introduces abstractions
to modularize the implementation of system-wide policies. It is based on a
composition operation, called aspect weaving, that implicitly modifies a base
system by performing related changes within the system modules. Aspect-oriented
graph grammars (AOGG) extend the classic graph grammar formalism by defining
aspects as sets of rule-based modifications over a base graph grammar. Despite
the advantages of aspect-oriented concepts regarding modularity, the implicit
nature of the aspect weaving operation may also introduce issues when reasoning
about the system behavior. Since in AOGGs aspect weaving is characterized by
means of rule-based rewriting, we can overcome these problems by using known
analysis techniques from the graph transformation literature to study aspect
composition. In this paper, we present a case study of a distributed
client-server system with global policies, modeled as an aspect-oriented graph
grammar, and discuss how to use the AGG tool to identify potential conflicts in
aspect weaving
Type-driven semantic interpretation and feature dependencies in R-LFG
Once one has enriched LFG's formal machinery with the linear logic mechanisms
needed for semantic interpretation as proposed by Dalrymple et. al., it is
natural to ask whether these make any existing components of LFG redundant. As
Dalrymple and her colleagues note, LFG's f-structure completeness and coherence
constraints fall out as a by-product of the linear logic machinery they propose
for semantic interpretation, thus making those f-structure mechanisms
redundant. Given that linear logic machinery or something like it is
independently needed for semantic interpretation, it seems reasonable to
explore the extent to which it is capable of handling feature structure
constraints as well.
R-LFG represents the extreme position that all linguistically required
feature structure dependencies can be captured by the resource-accounting
machinery of a linear or similiar logic independently needed for semantic
interpretation, making LFG's unification machinery redundant. The goal is to
show that LFG linguistic analyses can be expressed as clearly and perspicuously
using the smaller set of mechanisms of R-LFG as they can using the much larger
set of unification-based mechanisms in LFG: if this is the case then we will
have shown that positing these extra f-structure mechanisms is not

Content-based Video Retrieval by Integrating Spatio-Temporal and Stochastic Recognition of Events
As amounts of publicly available video data grow the need to query this data efficiently becomes significant. Consequently content-based retrieval of video data turns out to be a challenging and important problem. We address the specific aspect of inferring semantics automatically from raw video data. In particular, we introduce a new video data model that supports the integrated use of two different approaches for mapping low-level features to high-level concepts. Firstly, the model is extended with a rule-based approach that supports spatio-temporal formalization of high-level concepts, and then with a stochastic approach. Solving Bongard Problems with a Visual Language and Pragmatic Reasoning
More than 50 years ago Bongard introduced 100 visual concept learning
problems as a testbed for intelligent vision systems. These problems are now
known as Bongard problems. Although they are well known in the cognitive
science and AI communities only moderate progress has been made towards
building systems that can solve a substantial subset of them. In the system
presented here, visual features are extracted through image processing and then
translated into a symbolic visual vocabulary. We introduce a formal language
that allows representing complex visual concepts based on this vocabulary.
Using this language and Bayesian inference, complex visual concepts can be
induced from the examples that are provided in each Bongard problem. Contrary
to other concept learning problems the examples from which concepts are induced
are not random in Bongard problems, instead they are carefully chosen to
communicate the concept, hence requiring pragmatic reasoning. Taking pragmatic
reasoning into account we find good agreement between the concepts with high
posterior probability and the solutions formulated by Bongard himself. While
this approach is far from solving all Bongard problems, it solves the biggest
fraction yet
