Semantic web technologies for video surveillance metadata
Video surveillance systems are growing in size and complexity. Such systems typically consist of integrated modules of different vendors to cope with the increasing demands on network and storage capacity, intelligent video analytics, picture quality, and enhanced visual interfaces. Within a surveillance system, relevant information (like technical details on the video sequences, or analysis results of the monitored environment) is described using metadata standards. However, different modules typically use different standards, resulting in metadata interoperability problems. In this paper, we introduce the application of Semantic Web Technologies to overcome such problems. We present a semantic, layered metadata model and integrate it within a video surveillance system. Besides dealing with the metadata interoperability problem, the advantages of using Semantic Web Technologies and the inherent rule support are shown. A practical use case scenario is presented to illustrate the benefits of our novel approach
From Method Fragments to Method Services
In Method Engineering (ME) science, the key issue is the consideration of
information system development methods as fragments. Numerous ME approaches
have produced several definitions of method parts. Different in nature, these
fragments have nevertheless some common disadvantages: lack of implementation
tools, insufficient standardization effort, and so on. On the whole, the
observed drawbacks are related to the shortage of usage orientation. We have
proceeded to an in-depth analysis of existing method fragments within a
comparison framework in order to identify their drawbacks. We suggest
overcoming them by an improvement of the ?method service? concept. In this
paper, the method service is defined through the service paradigm applied to a
specific method fragment ? chunk. A discussion on the possibility to develop a
unique representation of method fragment completes our contribution
Content-driven design and architecture of E-learning applications
E-learning applications combine content with learning technology systems to support the creation of content and its delivery to the learner. In the future, we can expect the distinction between learning content and its supporting infrastructure to become blurred. Content objects will interact with infrastructure services as independent objects. Our solution to the development of e-learning applications â content-driven design and architecture â is based on content-centric ontological modelling and development of architectures. A linked data-driven & service-oriented architecture for sharing educational resources
The two fundamental aims of managing educational resources are to enable resources to be reusable and interoperable and to enable Web-scale sharing of resources across learning communities. Currently, a variety of approaches have been proposed to expose and manage educational resources and their metadata on the Web. These are usually based on heterogeneous metadata standards and schemas, such as IEEE LOM or ADL SCORM, and diverse repository interfaces such as OAI-PMH or SQI. Also, there is still a lack of usage of controlled vocabularies and available data sets that could replace the widespread use of unstructured text for describing resources. On the other hand, the Linked Data approach has proven that it offers a set of successful principles that have the potential to alleviate the aforementioned issues. In this paper, we introduce an architecture and prototype which is fundamentally based on (a) Linked Data principles and (b) Service-orientation to resolve the integration issues for sharing educational resources
A characteristics framework for Semantic Information Systems Standards
Semantic Information Systems (IS) Standards play a critical role in the development of the networked economy. While their importance is undoubted by all stakeholdersâsuch as businesses, policy makers, researchers, developersâthe current state of research leaves a number of questions unaddressed. Terminological confusion exists around the notions of âbusiness semanticsâ, âbusiness-to-business interoperabilityâ, and âinteroperability standardsâ amongst others. And, moreover, a comprehensive understanding about the characteristics of Semantic IS Standards is missing. The paper addresses this gap in literature by developing a characteristics framework for Semantic IS Standards. Two case studies are used to check the applicability of the framework in a âreal-lifeâ context. The framework lays the foundation for future research in an important field of the IS discipline and supports practitioners in their efforts to analyze, compare, and evaluate Semantic IS Standard
Quality-aware model-driven service engineering
Service engineering and service-oriented architecture as an integration and platform technology is a recent approach to software systems integration. Quality aspects
ranging from interoperability to maintainability to performance are of central importance for the integration of heterogeneous, distributed service-based systems. Architecture models can substantially influence quality attributes of the implemented software systems. Besides the benefits of explicit architectures on maintainability and reuse, architectural constraints such as styles, reference architectures and architectural patterns can influence observable software properties such as performance. Empirical performance evaluation is a process of measuring and evaluating the performance of implemented software. We present an approach for addressing the quality of services and service-based systems at the model-level in the context of model-driven service engineering. Visual Localisation of Mobile Devices in an Indoor Environment under Network Delay Conditions
Current progresses in home automation and service robotic environment have
highlighted the need to develop interoperability mechanisms that allow a
standard communication between the two systems. During the development of the
DHCompliant protocol, the problem of locating mobile devices in an indoor
environment has been investigated. The communication of the device with the
location service has been carried out to study the time delay that web services
offer in front of the sockets. The importance of obtaining data from real-time
location systems portends that a basic tool for interoperability, such as web
services, can be ineffective in this scenario because of the delays added in
the invocation of services. This paper is focused on introducing a web service
to resolve a coordinates request without any significant delay in comparison
with the sockets
Interoperability Between ELearning Systems
Online assessments are an integral part of eLearning systems that enhance both distance and continuous education. Although over two-hundred and fifty eLearning applications exist, most educational institutions are trapped with a particular vendor primarily due to lack of in test-question sharing features. This paper highlights the evolution of eLearning systems whilst detailing the two most prominent objective test question standards, namely, QML and QTI. An analysis conducted amongst software houses which are involved in the development of eLearning systems confirms the fact that most applications make use of proprietary formats and clearly shows a lack of import and export options amongst other features
