Object-based 2D-to-3D video conversion for effective stereoscopic content generation in 3D-TV applications
Three-dimensional television (3D-TV) has gained increasing popularity in the broadcasting domain, as it enables enhanced viewing experiences in comparison to conventional two-dimensional (2D) TV. However, its application has been constrained due to the lack of essential contents, i.e., stereoscopic videos. To alleviate such content shortage, an economical and practical solution is to reuse the huge media resources that are available in monoscopic 2D and convert them to stereoscopic 3D. Although stereoscopic video can be generated from monoscopic sequences using depth measurements extracted from cues like focus blur, motion and size, the quality of the resulting video may be poor as such measurements are usually arbitrarily defined and appear inconsistent with the real scenes. To help solve this problem, a novel method for object-based stereoscopic video generation is proposed which features i) optical-flow based occlusion reasoning in determining depth ordinal, ii) object segmentation using improved region-growing from masks of determined depth layers, and iii) a hybrid depth estimation scheme using content-based matching (inside a small library of true stereo image pairs) and depth-ordinal based regularization. Comprehensive experiments have validated the effectiveness of our proposed 2D-to-3D conversion method in generating stereoscopic videos of consistent depth measurements for 3D-TV applications

Stereoscopic high dynamic range imaging
Two modern technologies show promise to dramatically increase immersion in
virtual environments. Stereoscopic imaging captures two images representing
the views of both eyes and allows for better depth perception. High dynamic
range (HDR) imaging accurately represents real world lighting as opposed to
traditional low dynamic range (LDR) imaging. HDR provides a better contrast
and more natural looking scenes. The combination of the two technologies in
order to gain advantages of both has been, until now, mostly unexplored due to
the current limitations in the imaging pipeline. This thesis reviews both fields,
proposes stereoscopic high dynamic range (SHDR) imaging pipeline outlining the
challenges that need to be resolved to enable SHDR and focuses on capture and
compression aspects of that pipeline.
The problems of capturing SHDR images that would potentially require two
HDR cameras and introduce ghosting, are mitigated by capturing an HDR and
LDR pair and using it to generate SHDR images. A detailed user study compared
four different methods of generating SHDR images. Results demonstrated that
one of the methods may produce images perceptually indistinguishable from the
ground truth.
Insights obtained while developing static image operators guided the design
of SHDR video techniques. Three methods for generating SHDR video from an
HDR-LDR video pair are proposed and compared to the ground truth SHDR
videos. Results showed little overall error and identified a method with the least
error.
Once captured, SHDR content needs to be efficiently compressed. Five SHDR
compression methods that are backward compatible are presented. The proposed
methods can encode SHDR content to little more than that of a traditional single
LDR image (18% larger for one method) and the backward compatibility property
encourages early adoption of the format.
The work presented in this thesis has introduced and advanced capture and
compression methods for the adoption of SHDR imaging. In general, this research
paves the way for a novel field of SHDR imaging which should lead to improved
and more realistic representation of captured scenes

End-to-end 3D video communication over heterogeneous networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Three-dimensional technology, more commonly referred to as 3D technology, has revolutionised many fields including entertainment, medicine, and communications to name a few. In addition to 3D films, games, and sports channels, 3D perception has made tele-medicine a reality. By the year 2015, 30% of the all HD panels at home will be 3D enabled, predicted by consumer electronics manufacturers. Stereoscopic cameras, a comparatively mature technology compared to other 3D systems, are now being used by ordinary citizens to produce 3D content and share at a click of a button just like they do with the 2D counterparts via sites like YouTube. But technical challenges still exist, including with autostereoscopic multiview displays. 3D content requires many complex considerations--including how to represent it, and deciphering what is the best compression format--when considering transmission or storage, because of its increased amount of data. Any decision must be taken in the light of the available bandwidth or storage capacity, quality and user expectations. Free viewpoint navigation also remains partly unsolved. The most pressing issue getting in the way of widespread uptake of consumer 3D systems is the ability to deliver 3D content to heterogeneous consumer displays over the heterogeneous networks. Optimising 3D video communication solutions must consider the entire pipeline, starting with optimisation at the video source to the end display and transmission optimisation. Multi-view offers the most compelling solution for 3D videos with motion parallax and freedom from wearing headgear for 3D video perception. Optimising multi-view video for delivery and display could increase the demand for true 3D in the consumer market. This thesis focuses on an end-to-end quality optimisation in 3D video communication/transmission, offering solutions for optimisation at the compression, transmission, and decoder levels.Brunel University - Isambard Research Scholarshi
Overview of 3D Video: Coding Algorithms, Implementations and Standardization

Television, cinema and videogames are introducing, little by little, 3D technologies into the mass market. This comes as a result of the research done in the 3D field, solving many of its limitations such as quality, contents creation or 3D displays. This thesis focus on 3D video, considering concepts that concerns the coding issues and the video formats. The aim is to provide an overview of the current state of 3D video, including the standardization and some interesting implementations and alternatives that exist. In the report necessary background information is presented in order to understand the concepts developed: compression techniques, the different video formats, their standardization and some advances or alternatives to the processes previously explained. Finally, a comparison between the different concepts is presented to complete the overview, ending with some conclusions and proposed ideas for future works.Castellano: Las tecnologías 3D han despertado un gran interés en todo el mundo en los últimos años. Televisión, cine y videojuegos están introduciendo, poco a poco, ésta tecnología en el mercado. State of the art 3D technologies and MVV end to end system design
L’oggetto del presente lavoro di tesi è costituito dall’analisi e dalla recensione di tutte le tecnologie 3D: esistenti e in via di sviluppo per ambienti domestici; tenendo come punto di riferimento le tecnologie multiview video (MVV). Tutte le sezioni della catena dalla fase di cattura a quella di riproduzione sono analizzate. Lo scopo è di progettare una possibile architettura satellitare per un futuro sistema MVV televisivo, nell’ambito di due possibili scenari, broadcast o interattivo.
