    Internet enabled modelling of extended manufacturing enterprises using the process based techniques

    The paper presents the preliminary results of an ongoing research project on Internet enabled process-based modelling of extended manufacturing enterprises. It is proposed to apply the Open System Architecture for CIM (CIMOSA) modelling framework alongside with object-oriented Petri Net models of enterprise processes and object-oriented techniques for extended enterprises modelling. The main features of the proposed approach are described and some components discussed. Elementary examples of object-oriented Petri Net implementation and real-time visualisation are presented

    Literate modelling: capturing business knowledge with the UML

    At British Airways, we have found during several large OO projects documented using the UML that non-technical end-users, managers and business domain experts find it difficult to understand UML visual models. This leads to problems in requirement capture and review. To solve this problem, we have developed the technique of Literate Modelling. Literate Models are UML diagrams that are embedded in texts explaining the models. In that way end-users, managers and domain experts gain useful understanding of the models, whilst object-oriented analysts see exactly and precisely how the models define business requirements and imperatives. We discuss some early experiences with Literate Modelling at British Airways where it was used extensively in their Enterprise Object Modelling initiative.We explain why Literate Modelling is viewed as one of the critical success factors for this significant project. Finally, we propose that Literate Modelling may be a valuable extension to many other object-oriented and non object-oriented visual modelling languages

    Motivated by a family of related hybrid multiscale models, we have built an object-oriented framework for developing and implementing multiscale models of vascular tumour growth. The models are implemented in our framework as a case study to highlight how object-oriented programming techniques and good object-oriented design may be used effectively to develop hybrid multiscale models of vascular tumour growth. The intention is that this paper will serve as a useful reference for researchers modelling complex biological systems and that these researchers will employ some of the techniques presented herein in their own projects

    Query Modification in Object-oriented Database Federation

    We discuss the modification of queries against an integrated view in a federation of object-oriented databases. We present a generalisation of existing algorithms for simple global query processing that works for arbitrarily defined integration classes. We then extend this algorithm to deal with object-oriented features such as queries involving path expressions and nesting.     Workflow systems and object-oriented (OO) technology have undoubtedly been some of the most important domains of interest of information technology over the past decade. Both domains however, have largely evolved independently, and not much research can be found in which OO principles and concepts have been applied to workflow systems or vice versa. In this paper we show how the two domains can be integrated. By integrating both domains, business process modelling can benefit from the advantages of the object-oriented approach. On the other hand, a more process oriented approach to object-oriented development would enhance the organisational fit in of object-oriented information systems development.     Composing concurrent objects

    Adopting the object-oriented paradigm for the development of large and complex software systems offers several advantages, of which increased extensibility and reusability are the most prominent ones. The object-oriented model is also quite suitable for modelling concurrent systems. However, it appears that extensibility and reusability of concurrent applications is far from trivial. In addition, very little attention has been paid by the conventional object-oriented development methodologies to the analysis and design of\ud synchronisation constraints for concurrent objects.\ud To address these problems, in this thesis the framework of composition-filters, an extension to the object-oriented model, is adopted. An analysis is presented of the problems involved in reusing and extending concurrent objects, in particular the so-called inheritance anomalies. Based on this analysis, a set of criteria for effective extensible concurrent objectoriented\ud programming languages is formulated.\ud The thesis introduces techniques for the creation of concurrency and the synchronisation of concurrent activities, fully integrated within the (object-oriented) composition-filters model. Important properties of the proposed object model are: all objects are -potentially- active, intra-object concurrency is supported and synchronisation specifications are fully separated\ud from method implementations. The applicability and expressive power of the proposed technique are demonstrated, and it is shown how reusability and extensibility of concurrent objects are achieved

    Representing Interactional and External Environmental Semantics using Unified Modelling Language (UML)

    Object-oriented methodology is widely used in the information system development field. Nonetheless, recent research studies have discovered that the modelling grammars that use object-oriented methodology lack necessary constructs to represent certain real-world semantics. Therefore, the use of such grammars with their shortcomings can produce defective conceptual models, thereby producing defective information systems. Evermann and Wand (2005, 2009) studied this issue and proposed a set of rules for object-oriented grammatical constructs to represent static and behaviour semantics of a real-world phenomenon. This paper extends their work by proposing object-oriented grammatical rules for the interactional and external environmental semantics of a real-world phenomenon. This representation is exemplified using an object-oriented modelling grammar namely Unified Modelling Language (UML). Subsequently, the set of new rules has been validated using a case study. This extended UML facilitates seamless integration between the conceptual model and its system model
