    A Compact and Complete AFMT Invariant with Application to Face Recognition

    In this paper, we present a complete set of hybrid similarity invariants under the Analytical Fourier-Mellin Transform (AFMT) framework, and apply it to invariant face recognition. Because the magnitude and phase spectra are not processed separately, this invariant descriptor is complete. In order to simplify the invariant feature data for recognition and discrimination, a 2D-PCA approach is introduced into this complete invariant descriptor. The experimental results indicate that the presented invariant descriptor is complete and similarityinvariant. Its compact representation through the 2D-PCA preserves the essential structure of an object. Furthermore, we apply this compact form into ORL, Yale and BioID face databases for experimental verification, and achieve the desired results

    Analysis of a biologically-inspired system for real-time object recognition

    We present a biologically-inspired system for real-time, feed-forward object recognition in cluttered scenes. Our system utilizes a vocabulary of very sparse features that are shared between and within different object models. To detect objects in a novel scene, these features are located in the image, and each detected feature votes for all objects that are consistent with its presence. Due to the sharing of features between object models our approach is more scalable to large object databases than traditional methods. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, we train our system to recognize any of 50 objects in everyday cluttered scenes with substantial occlusion. Without further optimization we also demonstrate near-perfect recognition on a standard 3-D recognition problem. Our system has an interpretation as a sparsely connected feed-forward neural network, making it a viable model for fast, feed-forward object recognition in the primate visual system

    Hausdorff-Distance Enhanced Matching of Scale Invariant Feature Transform Descriptors in Context of Image Querying

    Reliable and effective matching of visual descriptors is a key step for many vision applications, e.g. image retrieval. In this paper, we propose to integrate the Hausdorff distance matching together with our pairing algorithm, in order to obtain a robust while computationally efficient process of matching feature descriptors for image-to-image querying in standards datasets. For this purpose, Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptors have been matched using our presented algorithm, followed by the computation of our related similarity measure. This approach has shown excellent performance in both retrieval accuracy and speed

    Deformable Convolutional Networks

    Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are inherently limited to model geometric transformations due to the fixed geometric structures in its building modules. In this work, we introduce two new modules to enhance the transformation modeling capacity of CNNs, namely, deformable convolution and deformable RoI pooling. Both are based on the idea of augmenting the spatial sampling locations in the modules with additional offsets and learning the offsets from target tasks, without additional supervision. The new modules can readily replace their plain counterparts in existing CNNs and can be easily trained end-to-end by standard back-propagation, giving rise to deformable convolutional networks. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach on sophisticated vision tasks of object detection and semantic segmentation. The code would be released

    On the use of SIFT features for face authentication

    Several pattern recognition and classification techniques have been applied to the biometrics domain. Among them, an interesting technique is the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), originally devised for object recognition. Even if SIFT features have emerged as a very powerful image descriptors, their employment in face analysis context has never been systematically investigated. This paper investigates the application of the SIFT approach in the context of face authentication. In order to determine the real potential and applicability of the method, different matching schemes are proposed and tested using the BANCA database and protocol, showing promising results
