    The database systems have nowadays an increasingly important role in the knowledge-based society, in which computers have penetrated all fields of activity and the Internet tends to develop worldwide. In the current informatics context, the development of the applications with databases is the work of the specialists. Using databases, reach a database from various applications, and also some of related concepts, have become accessible to all categories of IT users. This paper aims to summarize the curricular area regarding the fundamental database systems issues, which are necessary in order to train specialists in economic informatics higher education. The database systems integrate and interfere with several informatics technologies and therefore are more difficult to understand and use. Thus, students should know already a set of minimum, mandatory concepts and their practical implementation: computer systems, programming techniques, programming languages, data structures.     Integrating ERD and UML Concepts When Teaching Data Modeling

    In this paper, we describe a teaching approach that evolved from our experience teaching in both the traditional database and systems analysis classes as well as a number of semesters spent team-teaching an object-oriented systems development course. Fundamentally, we argue that existing knowledge of structured systems development can and should inform our teaching processes when teaching object-oriented systems development techniques. We draw from an anecdotal industry example provided by one of our former students to illustrate the value of this approach given our perception that there is a need in practice today to easily shift from structured to object-oriented thinking

    Automated extraction of knowledge for model-based diagnostics

    The concept of accessing computer aided design (CAD) design databases and extracting a process model automatically is investigated as a possible source for the generation of knowledge bases for model-based reasoning systems. The resulting system, referred to as automated knowledge generation (AKG), uses an object-oriented programming structure and constraint techniques as well as internal database of component descriptions to generate a frame-based structure that describes the model. The procedure has been designed to be general enough to be easily coupled to CAD systems that feature a database capable of providing label and connectivity data from the drawn system. The AKG system is capable of defining knowledge bases in formats required by various model-based reasoning tools

    Applying Object-oriented concepts to the design of complex graphical interface has received great attention in the database and knowledge representation disciplines. Traditional CAD systems can not support efficient environments for design processes because they store information about all the objects for display purposes but do not store any knowledge for reasoning purposes. They are called knowledge poor . Graphical Deep Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence has been proven successful to represent knowledge about objects for display purposes as well as reasoning purposes. We introduwd the theory of Graphical Deep Knowledge into the object-oriented database s stem VML to design a Knowledge rich system which can support better graphical interface. We showed that the theory of Graphical Deep Knowledge can improve graphical interface design and functions as a flexible, and knowledgeable tool for design processes. Based on the presented theory, we developed a system called GDKRIVVOOD (Graphical Deep Knowledge Representation In Vodak/VML Object-Oriented Database) for circuit board design

The information graph model and Graph Object Access Language (GOAL) allow integrated handling of data, information and knowledge along with a variety of specialized objects (e.g., for geographic or multimedia information systems). There is flexible support for hyperbases, thesauri, lexicons, and both relational and object-oriented types of DBMS applications. In this paper we give the first published account of our new, powerful model and language (GOAL), illustrate their use, and compare them with related work

    Expert system decision support for low-cost launch vehicle operations

    Progress in assessing the feasibility, benefits, and risks associated with AI expert systems applied to low cost expendable launch vehicle systems is described. Part one identified potential application areas in vehicle operations and on-board functions, assessed measures of cost benefit, and identified key technologies to aid in the implementation of decision support systems in this environment. Part two of the program began the development of prototypes to demonstrate real-time vehicle checkout with controller and diagnostic/analysis intelligent systems and to gather true measures of cost savings vs. conventional software, verification and validation requirements, and maintainability improvement. The main objective of the expert advanced development projects was to provide a robust intelligent system for control/analysis that must be performed within a specified real-time window in order to meet the demands of the given application. The efforts to develop the two prototypes are described. Prime emphasis was on a controller expert system to show real-time performance in a cryogenic propellant loading application and safety validation implementation of this system experimentally, using commercial-off-the-shelf software tools and object oriented programming techniques. This smart ground support equipment prototype is based in C with imbedded expert system rules written in the CLIPS protocol. The relational database, ORACLE, provides non-real-time data support. The second demonstration develops the vehicle/ground intelligent automation concept, from phase one, to show cooperation between multiple expert systems. This automated test conductor (ATC) prototype utilizes a knowledge-bus approach for intelligent information processing by use of virtual sensors and blackboards to solve complex problems. It incorporates distributed processing of real-time data and object-oriented techniques for command, configuration control, and auto-code generation
