    Experimentation to Evaluate the Benefits of Model Driven Development

    Tesis por compendio[ES] El Desarrollo Dirigido por Modelos, MDD por sus siglas en inglés (Model Driven Development), es un enfoque de ingeniería del software que centra la creación y evolución de productos software en el modelado. Desde hace casi dos décadas, la comunidad científica ha descrito muchas de las ventajas de MDD frente a otros enfoques, sin embargo, su adopción en el entorno industrial es muy poco frecuente. Con el objetivo de entender por qué MDD no ha reemplazado otros enfoques de ingeniería software, he realizado una investigación empírica a través de tres experimentos controlados. Con el primer experimento pretendo aclarar si los beneficios de MDD frente al Desarrollo centrado en Código, CcD por sus siglas en inglés (Code Centric Development), son fieles a la realidad del desarrollo software actual. En el segundo experimento comparo la valoración que realizan los ingenieros de los modelos que utilizan, con su utilidad para ser utilizados en contextos MDD. En el tercer experimento analizo el desempeño de los profesionales software en tareas de mantenimiento en contextos MDD. Nuestros resultados confirman los beneficios de MDD frente a otros enfoques, pero también, que la intención de uso de MDD no alcanza valores máximos. Los sujetos subestiman el potencial de los modelos que desarrollan y utilizan en contextos MDD. El problema de adopción parece estar ligado a factores humanos, no a factores técnicos.[CA] El Desenvolupament Dirigit per Models, MDD (Model Driven Development), és un enfocament d'enginyeria del programari que centra la creació i evolució de productes programari en el modelatge. Des de fa quasi dues dècades, la comunitat científica ha descrit moltes dels avantatges de MDD enfront d'altres enfocaments, no obstant això, la seua adopció en l'entorn industrial és molt poc freqüent. Amb l'objectiu d'entendre per què MDD no ha reemplaçat altres enfocaments d'enginyeria programari, he realitzat una investigació empírica a través de tres experiments controlats. Amb el primer experiment pretenc aclarir si els beneficis de MDD enfront d'altres enfocaments, com el Desenvolupament centrat en Codi, CcD (Code Centric Development), són fidels a la realitat del desenvolupament programari actual. El problema d'adopció sembla estar lligat a factors humans, no a factors tècnics.[EN] Model Driven Development (MDD) is a software engineering approach in which the code of a software product is generated and evolutionated from conceptual models that abstractly represents the system. For nearly two decades, the scientific community has described many of the advantages of MDD over other approaches. Despite the benefits of MDD, its use in real practical developments is merely anecdotal. To understand why MDD has not replaced other software engineering approaches, I have conducted an empirical investigation through three controlled experiments. The first experiment aims to clarify whether the benefits of MDD compared to code-centric development (CcD) match the reality of development in real environments. In the second experiment, I compare engineers' assessment of the models they develop with the usefulness of these models to be used in MDD contexts. In the third experiment, I analyze the performance of software professionals in maintenance tasks in MDD contexts. Our results confirm the benefits of MDD over other approaches; however, the intention to use MDD does not reach maximum values.     Towards Interoperable Research Infrastructures for Environmental and Earth Sciences

    This open access book summarises the latest developments on data management in the EU H2020 ENVRIplus project, which brought together more than 20 environmental and Earth science research infrastructures into a single community. It provides readers with a systematic overview of the common challenges faced by research infrastructures and how a ‘reference model guided’ engineering approach can be used to achieve greater interoperability among such infrastructures in the environmental and earth sciences. The 20 contributions in this book are structured in 5 parts on the design, development, deployment, operation and use of research infrastructures.     Active provenance for data intensive research

    The role of provenance information in data-intensive research is a significant topic of discussion among technical experts and scientists. Typical use cases addressing traceability, versioning and reproducibility of the research findings are extended with more interactive scenarios in support, for instance, of computational steering and results management. In this thesis we investigate the impact that lineage records can have on the early phases of the analysis, for instance performed through near-real-time systems and Virtual Research Environments (VREs) tailored to the requirements of a specific community. By positioning provenance at the centre of the computational research cycle, we highlight the importance of having mechanisms at the data-scientists’ side that, by integrating with the abstractions offered by the processing technologies, such as scientific workflows and data-intensive tools, facilitate the experts’ contribution to the lineage at runtime. Ultimately, by encouraging tuning and use of provenance for rapid feedback, the thesis aims at improving the synergy between different user groups to increase productivity and understanding of their processes. We present a model of provenance, called S-PROV, that uses and further extends PROV and ProvONE. The relationships and properties characterising the workflow’s abstractions and their concrete executions are re-elaborated to include aspects related to delegation, distribution and steering of stateful streaming operators. The model is supported by the Active framework for tuneable and actionable lineage ensuring the user’s engagement by fostering rapid exploitation. Here, concepts such as provenance types, configuration and explicit state management allow users to capture complex provenance scenarios and activate selective controls based on domain and user-defined metadata. We outline how the traces are recorded in a new comprehensive system, called S-ProvFlow, enabling different classes of consumers to explore the provenance data with services and tools for monitoring, in-depth validation and comprehensive visual-analytics. The work of this thesis will be discussed in the context of an existing computational framework and the experience matured in implementing provenance-aware tools for seismology and climate VREs. It will continue to evolve through newly funded projects, thereby providing generic and user-centred solutions for data-intensive research

    Formaciones imaginarias del diseñador gráfico en el discurso del campo académico.

    En este trabajo se describe un proyecto de tesis doctoral en el que se analiza el discurso sobre el diseñador gráfico. Se parte del supuesto de que existe una tricotomía de su perfil: 1) el campo profesional, 2) el campo educativo y, 3) el campo académico. Proponemos que dicha tricotomía permite la identificación de imaginarios sobre el tema, y no solo eso, sino que también aporta elementos que conforman la identidad (Bauman, 2002) de un diseñador gráfico. La pregunta de investigación es ¿Cuál es la identidad discursiva del diseñador gráfico en el campo académico? La investigación descrita es de tipo cualitativo y deductivo; para la construcción la identidad discursiva (Van Dijk, T; 2008) del diseñador gráfico, se toman en cuenta diversas publicaciones: principalmente investigaciones y breves artículos difundidos en comunidades/foros de reflexión y debate en torno a la temática, además de memorias de congresos y libros. En apoyo al desarrollo del proyecto se ha diseñado un Laboratorio de Intervención en el Diseño, cuyos objetivos son impulsar el desarrollo social y cultural de los diseñadores gráficos por medio de la investigación, educación continua, producción y vinculación. En un primer acercamiento a las formaciones imaginarias (Pêcheux, 1978) sobre la identidad del diseñador gráfico se centran en el grado de erudición para la ejecución de su trabajo, en la cultura que demuestran y en la autonomía con la que producen
