Optical amplifiers play a central role in all categories of fibre communications systems and networks. By compensating for the losses exerted by the transmission medium and the components through which the signals pass, they reduce the need for expensive and slow optical-electrical-optical conversion. The photonic gain media, which are normally based on glass- or semiconductor-based waveguides, can amplify many high speed wavelength division multiplexed channels simultaneously. Recent research has also concentrated on wavelength conversion, switching, demultiplexing in the time domain and other enhanced functions. Advances in Optical Amplifiers presents up to date results on amplifier performance, along with explanations of their relevance, from leading researchers in the field. Its chapters cover amplifiers based on rare earth doped fibres and waveguides, stimulated Raman scattering, nonlinear parametric processes and semiconductor media. Wavelength conversion and other enhanced signal processing functions are also considered in depth. This book is targeted at research, development and design engineers from teams in manufacturing industry, academia and telecommunications service operators

This thesis details an experimental and simulation investigation of some novel all-optical signal processing techniques for future optical communication networks. These all-optical techniques include modulation format conversion, phase discrimination and clock recovery. The methods detailed in this thesis use the nonlinearities associated with semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) to manipulate signals in the optical domain. Chapter 1 provides an introduction into the work detailed in this thesis, discusses the increased demand for capacity in today’s optical fibre networks and finally explains why all-optical signal processing may be of interest for future optical networks. Chapter 2 discusses the relevant background information required to fully understand the all-optical techniques demonstrated in this thesis. Chapter 3 details some pump-probe measurement techniques used to calculate the gain and phase recovery times of a long SOA. A remarkably fast gain recovery is observed and the wavelength dependent nature of this recovery is investigated. Chapter 4 discusses the experimental demonstration of an all-optical modulation conversion technique which can convert on-off- keyed data into either duobinary or alternative mark inversion. In Chapter 5 a novel phase sensitive frequency conversion scheme capable of extracting the two orthogonal components of a quadrature phase modulated signal into two separate frequencies is demonstrated. Chapter 6 investigates a novel all-optical clock recovery technique for phase modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing superchannels and finally Chapter 7 provides a brief conclusion

Optical fibres, which can easily handle any bandwidth demand, have been rolled out to more than 32 million consumer’s homes and professional buildings worldwide up to 2010. The basic technological and economical challenges of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) has been solved. The current FTTH technology can now providing baseband Gbit Ethernet and high definition TV services to the gates of homes. Thus, the bottleneck for delivery of broadband services to the end users is shifting from the access network to the in-building network. In the meantime, the need for high-capacity transmission between devices inside the building, e.g. between desktop PC and data services, are also rapidly increase. How to bring high bandwidth to the mobile terminals such as laptops, PDAs or cell phones as well as to the fixed terminals such as desktop PCs and HDTV equipment in an all-in-one network infrastructure is a challenge we are facing. Building on the flexibility of the wireless access networks and the latent vast bandwidth of a fibre infrastructure, radio-over-fibre (RoF) techniques have been proposed as a cost-effective solution to the future integrated broadband services in in-building networks. This thesis investigates techniques to deliver high data rate wireless services via in-building networks: high capacity RoF links employing optical frequency multiplication (OFM) and sub-carrier multiplexing (SCM) techniques, with single- or multi-carrier signal formats. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) format is investigated for the RoF transmission system, particularly with regard to the optical system nonlinearity. For low-cost short-range optical backbone networks, RoF transmission over large-core diameter plastic optical fibre (POF) links has been studied, including the transmission of the WiMedia-compliant multiband OFDM UWB signal over bandwidth-limited large-core POF as well as a full-duplex bi-directional UWB transmission over POF. In order to improve the functionalities for delivery of wireless services of in-building networks, techniques to introduce flexibility into the network architecture and to create dynamic capacity allocation have been investigated. By employing optical switching techniques based on optical semiconductor amplifiers (SOA), an optically routed RoF system has been studied. The dynamic capacity allocation is addressed by investigating one-dimensional and two-dimensional routing using electrical SCM and optical wavelengths. In addition, next to RoF networking, this thesis explores techniques for wired delivery of baseband high capacity services over POF links by employing a multi-level signal modulation format, in particular discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation. Transmission of 10 Gbit/s data over 1 mm core diameter PMMA POF links is demonstrated, as a competitor to more expensive fibre solutions such as silica single and multimode fibre. A record transmission rate of more than 40 Gbit/s is presented for POF whose core diameter is comparable with silica multimode fibre. Finally, from the network perspective, the convergence of wired and wireless multi-standard services into a single fibre-based infrastructure has been studied. Techniques have been designed and demonstrated for in-building networks, which can convey both high capacity baseband services and broadband radio frequency (RF) services over a POF backbone link. The multi-standard RoF signals carry different wireless services at different radio frequencies and with different bandwidths, including WiFi, WiMax, UMTS and UWB. System setups to carry them together over the same multimode optical fibre based network have been designed and experimentally shown. All the concepts, designs and system experiments presented in this thesis underline the strong potential of multimode (silica and plastic) optical fibre techniques for the delivery of broadband services to wired and wireless devices in in-building networks, in order to extend to the end user the benefits of the broadband FTTH networks which are being installed and deployed worldwide

[EN] Optical wireless communication (OWC) is a very promising technology for future wireless communications developments. It has attracted increasing interest from researchers and several companies around the world are currently working on the development of very high-speed wireless networks. The scientific and industrial communities believe that OWC will be a complementary technology in its various forms: Free Space Optical communications (FSO), Visible Light Communications (VLC), Light Fidelity (Li-Fi). In fact, the optical spectrum has been considered for many years as a great opportunity for wireless communications especially due to the saturation of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. This dissertation deals with the use of broadband sources in visible light transmission systems (VLC) as well as fiber optic systems. To carry out the research, three parts can be distinguished: In the first part, we consider the study and simulation of Light Emitting Diode (LED) components with the WIEN2k software by focusing on the optical and electrical properties of elements II-VI. The second part deals with the design, implementation and testing of different VLC communication prototypes for analog and digital transmission in simplex and half-duplex mode. We have demonstrated that an OWC system using a broadband source (i.e. an LED) can be used not only for data transmission, but also for wireless power transmission. Moreover, the synchronization problem and the detection of level "1" or "0" of a bit often arise in the optical wireless communication systems. This is a result of the attenuation nature of the light over the distance and the problem of Non Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) between the emitter and the receiver. To deal with this problem, a communication protocol ensuring reliable digital data transmission with an adaptive bit level detection algorithm has been provided and its effectiveness has been demonstrated by the transmission of texts and images. In addition, this thesis provides a solution for the implementation of wavelength division multiplexed - orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (WDM-OFDM) transmitters based on the use of broadband sources in the infrared spectrum for centralized bidirectional fiber networks. Despite the chromatic dispersion that avoids the use of this type of optical sources, the inclusion of certain structures before detection allows the transmission of OFDM signals in optical links. Carrier reuse, dynamic bandwidth allocation and multiband OFDM signals transmission will be experimentally demonstrated by using optical broadband sources in WDM networks. The main results obtained during this thesis work demonstrate the study procedures, for each part, the effectiveness of the proposed solutions as well as the constraints encountered. (2006). Characterisation and optimisation of the semiconductor optical amplifier for ultra-high speed performance

This research is in the area of high speed telecommunication systems where all- optical technologies are being introduced to meet the ever increasing demand for bandwidth by replacing the costly electro-optical conversion modules. In such systems, all-optical routers are the key technologies capable of supporting networks with high capacity/bandwidth as well as offering lower power consumption. One of the fundamental building blocks in all-optical routers/networks is the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), which is used in for clock extraction, wavelength conversion, all-optical gates and optical processing. The SOAs are perfect for optical amplification and optical switching at a very high speed. This is due to their small size, a low switching energy, non-linear characteristics and the seamless integration with other optical devices. Therefore, characterisation of the SOA operational functionalities and optimisation of its performance for amplification and switching are essential and challenging. Existing models on SOA gain dynamics do not address the impact of optical propagating wavelength, the combined input parameters and their adaptation for optimised amplification and switching operations. The SOA operation is limited at high data rates > 2.5 Gb/s to a greater extent by the gain recovery time. A number of schemes have been proposed to overcome this limitation; however no work has been reported on the SOA for improving the gain uniformity. This research aims to characterise the boundaries conditions and optimise the SOA performance for amplification and switching. The research also proposes alternative techniques to maximise the SOA gain uniformity at ultra-high speed data rates theoretically and practically. An SOA model is been developed and used throughout the research for theoretical simulations. Results show that the optimum conditions required to achieve the maximum output gain for best amplification performance depends on the SOA peak gain wavelength. It is also shown that the optimum phase shift of 180º for switching can be induced at lower input power level when the SOA biasing current is at its maximum limit. A gain standard deviation equation is introduced to measure the SOA gain uniformity. New wavelength diversity technique is proposed to achieve an average improvement of 7.82 dB in the SOA gain standard deviation at rates from 10 to 160 Gb/s. Other novel techniques that improved the gain uniformity employing triangular and sawtooth bias currents, as replacements for the uniform biasing, have been proposed. However, these current patterns were not able to improve the SOA gain uniformity at data rates beyond 40 Gb/s. For that reason, an optimised biasing for SOA (OBS) pattern is introduced to maximise the gain uniformity at any input data rates. This OBS pattern was practically generated and compared to the uniform biased SOA at different data rates and with different input bit sequences. All executed experiments showed better output uniformities employing the proposed OBS pattern with an average improvement of 19%

This thesis investigates and develops all-optical processing devices for wavelength division multiplexing networks (DWM) of the future. The ultimate goal of optical networks is to transport and deliver a densely multiplexed spectrum, populated by ultra-high bit rate signals over hundreds or thousands of kilometers of optical fiber. Such signals should be transported and routed transparently in the optical domain, without recurring to optic-electro-optic (OEO) conversions, avoiding its limitations and costs. Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based technology is a promising building block due to its inherent ultra-fast and efficient non-linear effects, potential for integration, low power consumption and cost. Wavelength converters are the basic optical functionality to increase the network throughput and avoid wavelength blocking. Methods to increase the operation bandwidth of cross-gain modulation (XGM) converters are studied and experimentally assessed to enable operation beyond the physical constraints of SOA. Single and multi-wavelength conversion exploiting crossphase modulation (XPM) in Mach-Zehnder interferometer with semiconductor optical amplifiers (MZI-SOA) is tested. High bit rate DWDM networks require optimized modulation formats with enhanced tolerance to fiber impairments and reduced spectral tolerance. As a consequence, it is crucial to develop all-optical modulation formats between legacy on-off-keying networks and networks employing advanced modulation formats. An all-optical format converter between optical double sideband (ODSB) and optical vestigial sideband (OVSB) based on SOA self-phase modulation is proposed and thoroughly characterized by simulations and experimental tests. A converter, which uses a mix of XGM and XPM to allow simultaneous pulse and modulation format conversion to the carrier suppressed format, is proposed. The interface between ultra-high bit rate transport networks and lower bit rate access networks requires optical pulse format conversions between return-tozero (RZ) and non-return-to-zero (NRZ). Two different structures are proposed and investigated. The first is based on detuned filtering of XPM converted signal; while the second uses the dynamics of the internal laser of a gainclamped SOA. All-optical regeneration is one of the most sought functionalities to reduce network costs. Regeneration is achieved in this work through two simple setups: a MZI-SOA based structure, and a method in which the internal laser from a GC-SOA is modulated with the input distorted signal. Most applications are experimentally validated at 40 Gb/s, with potential for even higher bit rates, demonstrating that SOA can be one of the key elements for the next generation of optical networks

Developing coherent optical wavelength conversion systems for reconfigurable photonic networks

In future optical networks that employ wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the use of optical switching technologies on a burst or packet level, combined with advanced modulation formats would achieve greater spectral efficiency and utilize the existing bandwidth more efficiently. All-optical wavelength converters are expected to be one of the key components in these broadband networks. They can be used at the network nodes to avoid contention and to dynamically allocate wavelengths to ensure optimum use of fiber bandwidth. In this work, a reconfigurable wavelength converter comprising of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) as the nonlinear element and a fast-switching sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SG-DBR) tunable laser as one of the pumps is developed. The wavelength conversion of 12.5-Gbaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and Pol-Mul QPSK signals with switching time of tens of nanoseconds is experimentally achieved. Although the tunable DBR lasers can achieve ns tuning time, they present relatively large phase noise. The phase noise transfer from the pump to the converted signal can have a deleterious effect on signal quality and cause a performance penalty with phase modulated signals. To overcome the phase noise transfer issue, a wavelength converter using tunable dual-correlated pumps provided by the combination of a single-section quantum dash passively mode-locked laser (QD-PMLL) and a programmable tunable optical filter is designed and the wavelength conversion of QPSK and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals at 12.5 GBaud is experimentally investigated. Nonlinear distortion of the wavelength converted signal caused by gain saturation effects in the SOA can significantly degrade the signal quality and cause difficulties for the practical wavelength conversion of sig nal data with advanced modulation formats. In this work, the machine learning clustering based nonlinearity compensation method is proposed to improve the tolerance to nonlinear distortion in an SOA based wavelength conversion system with 16 QAM and 64 QAM signals
