    Architectures and Algorithms for the Signal Processing of Advanced MIMO Radar Systems

    This thesis focuses on the research, development and implementation of novel concepts, architectures, demonstrator systems and algorithms for the signal processing of advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radar systems. The key concept is to address compact system, which have high resolutions and are able to perform a fast radar signal processing, three-dimensional (3D), and four-dimensional (4D) beamforming for radar image generation and target estimation. The idea is to obtain a complete sensing of range, Azimuth and elevation (additionally Doppler as the fourth dimension) from the targets in the radar captures. The radar technology investigated, aims at addressing sev- eral civil and military applications, such as surveillance and detection of targets, both air and ground based, and situational awareness, both in cars and in flying platforms, from helicopters, to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and air-taxis. Several major topics have been targeted. The development of complete systems and innovative FPGA, ARM and software based digital architectures for 3D imaging MIMO radars, which operate in both Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Frequency Divi- sion Multiplexing (FDM) modes, with Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals, respectively. The de- velopment of real-time radar signal processing, beamforming and Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) algorithms for target detection, with particular focus on FFT based, hardware implementable techniques. The study and implementation of advanced system concepts, parametrisation and simulation of next generation real-time digital radars (e.g. OFDM based). The design and development of novel constant envelope orthogonal waveforms for real-time 3D OFDM MIMO radar systems. The MIMO architectures presented in this thesis are a collection of system concepts, de- sign and simulations, as well as complete radar demonstrators systems, with indoor and outdoor measurements. Several of the results shown, come in the form of radar images which have been captured in field-test, in different scenarios, which aid in showing the proper functionality of the systems. The research activities for this thesis, have been carried out on the premises of Air- bus, based in Munich (Germany), as part of a Ph.D. candidate joint program between Airbus and the Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture (Dipartimento Politecnico di Ingegneria e Architettura), of the University of Udine, based in Udine (Italy).Questa tesi si concentra sulla ricerca, lo sviluppo e l\u2019implementazione di nuovi concetti, architetture, sistemi dimostrativi e algoritmi per l\u2019elaborazione dei segnali in sistemi radar avanzati, basati su tecnologia Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). Il con- cetto chiave `e quello di ottenere sistemi compatti, dalle elevate risoluzioni e in grado di eseguire un\u2019elaborazione del segnale radar veloce, un beam-forming tri-dimensionale (3D) e quadri-dimensionale (4D) per la generazione di immagini radar e la stima delle informazioni dei bersagli, detti target. L\u2019idea `e di ottenere una stima completa, che includa la distanza, l\u2019Azimuth e l\u2019elevazione (addizionalmente Doppler come quarta di- mensione) dai target nelle acquisizioni radar. La tecnologia radar indagata ha lo scopo di affrontare diverse applicazioni civili e militari, come la sorveglianza e la rilevazione di targets, sia a livello aereo che a terra, e la consapevolezza situazionale, sia nelle auto che nelle piattaforme di volo, dagli elicotteri, ai Unmanned Aerial Vehicels (UAV) e taxi volanti (air-taxis). Le tematiche affrontante sono molte. Lo sviluppo di sistemi completi e di architetture digitali innovative, basate su tecnologia FPGA, ARM e software, per radar 3D MIMO, che operano in modalit`a Multiplexing Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) e Multiplexing Frequency Diversion (FDM), con segnali di tipo FMCW (Frequency Modulated Contin- uous Wave) e Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), rispettivamente. Lo sviluppo di tecniche di elaborazione del segnale radar in tempo reale, algoritmi di beam-forming e di stima della direzione di arrivo, Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA), dei seg- nali radar, per il rilevamento dei target, con particolare attenzione a processi basati su trasformate di Fourier (FFT).     Interference Removal for Radar/Communication Co-existence: the Random Scattering Case

    In this paper we consider an un-cooperative spectrum sharing scenario, wherein a radar system is to be overlaid to a pre-existing wireless communication system. Given the order of magnitude of the transmitted powers in play, we focus on the issue of interference mitigation at the communication receiver. We explicitly account for the reverberation produced by the (typically high-power) radar transmitter whose signal hits scattering centers (whether targets or clutter) producing interference onto the communication receiver, which is assumed to operate in an un-synchronized and un-coordinated scenario. We first show that receiver design amounts to solving a non-convex problem of joint interference removal and data demodulation: next, we introduce two algorithms, both exploiting sparsity of a proper representation of the interference and of the vector containing the errors of the data block. The first algorithm is basically a relaxed constrained Atomic Norm minimization, while the latter relies on a two-stage processing structure and is based on alternating minimization. The merits of these algorithms are demonstrated through extensive simulations: interestingly, the two-stage alternating minimization algorithm turns out to achieve satisfactory performance with moderate computational complexity

    Performance of Radar and Communication Networks Coexisting in Shared Spectrum Bands

    Recent technological advancements are making the use of compact, low-cost, low-power mm-wave radars viable for providing environmental awareness in a number of applications, ranging from automotive to indoor mapping and radio resource optimisation. These emerging use-cases pave the road towards networks in which a large number of radar and broadband communications devices coexist, sharing a common spectrum band in a possibly uncoordinated fashion. Although a clear understanding of how mutual interference influences radar and communications performance is key to proper system design, the core tradeoffs that arise in such scenarios are still largely unexplored. In this paper, we provide results that help bridge this gap, obtained by means of an analytical model and extensive simulations. To capture the fundamental interactions between the two systems, we study mm-wave networks where pulsed radars coexist with communications devices that access the channel following an ALOHA policy. We investigate the effect of key parameters on the performance of the coexisting systems, including the network density, fraction of radar and communication nodes in the network, antenna directivity, and packet length. We quantify the effect of mutual interference in the coexistence scenario on radar detection and communication network throughput, highlighting some non-trivial interplays and deriving useful design tradeoffs

    Joint Radar and Communication Design: Applications, State-of-the-Art, and the Road Ahead

    Sharing of the frequency bands between radar and communication systems has attracted substantial attention, as it can avoid under-utilization of otherwise permanently allocated spectral resources, thus improving efficiency. Further, there is increasing demand for radar and communication systems that share the hardware platform as well as the frequency band, as this not only decongests the spectrum, but also benefits both sensing and signaling operations via the full cooperation between both functionalities. Nevertheless, the success of spectrum and hardware sharing between radar and communication systems critically depends on high-quality joint radar and communication designs. In the first part of this paper, we overview the research progress in the areas of radar-communication coexistence and dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems, with particular emphasis on application scenarios and technical approaches. In the second part, we propose a novel transceiver architecture and frame structure for a DFRC base station (BS) operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, using the hybrid analog-digital (HAD) beamforming technique. We assume that the BS is serving a multi-antenna user equipment (UE) over a mmWave channel, and at the same time it actively detects targets. The targets also play the role of scatterers for the communication signal. In that framework, we propose a novel scheme for joint target search and communication channel estimation, which relies on omni-directional pilot signals generated by the HAD structure. Given a fully-digital communication precoder and a desired radar transmit beampattern, we propose to design the analog and digital precoders under non-convex constant-modulus (CM) and power constraints, such that the BS can formulate narrow beams towards all the targets, while pre-equalizing the impact of the communication channel. Furthermore, we design a HAD receiver that can simultaneously process signals from the UE and echo waves from the targets. By tracking the angular variation of the targets, we show that it is possible to recover the target echoes and mitigate the resulting interference to the UE signals, even when the radar and communication signals share the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The feasibility and efficiency of the proposed approaches in realizing DFRC are verified via numerical simulations. Finally, the paper concludes with an overview of the open problems in the research field of communication and radar spectrum sharing (CRSS)

    The demand for radio-frequency bandwidth is rising, with the growing number of users and applications. The radar and communication systems are two of main players in this regard and are central to make the IoT paradigm a reality. The separation of the radar and communication system is a waste of resources and the interference between the two systems is inevitable. On the other hand, their integration on a single hardware, enables the paradigm of dual functionality devices with communication and radar sensing capabilities fundamental to cope with the challenges of future IoT. In this dissertation, the integration of radar and communication systems is accomplished by using OFDM as a common waveform and the use of Alamouti coding enables both the achievement of spatial diversity, for the communication functionality, and of transmit signal orthogonality required to improve resolution, for the radar functionality. The evaluation of such methods as a way to achieve radar and communication integration was accomplished by developing a simulation platform, first only with the radar functionality, for SISO and MIMO configurations, and then with both radar and communication functionalities. The RadCom system developed present good performance, low complexity and so it is interesting for practical applicationsA necessidade por largura de banda de radiofrequência, está a aumentar com o crescente número de utilizadores e aplicações. Os sistemas de radar e comunicações, são dois dos principais intervenientes nesta matéria e fundamentais para fazer do paradigma da IoT uma realidade. A separação dos sistemas de radar e comunicação, é um desperdício de recurso sendo a interferência entre os dois sistemas inevitável. Por outro lado, a integração em um único hardware, permite o paradigma de dispositivos de funcionalidade dupla com capacidades de comunicação e radar, fundamentais para lidar com os desafios da futura IoT. Nesta dissertação, a integração de sistemas de radar e comunicação é realizada usando OFDM, como forma de onda comum. O uso da codificação de Alamouti permite tanto a obtenção de diversidade espacial, para a funcionalidade de comunicação, como a como a ortogonalidade do sinal de transmissão necessária para melhorar a resolução da funcionalidade do radar. A avaliação de tais métodos como uma maneira de alcançar a integração de radar e comunicação foi alcançada através do desenvolvimento de uma plataforma de simulação. Primeiro, apenas com a funcionalidade radar, para configurações SISO e MIMO. Por fim, com as funcionalidades de radar e comunicação.
