Classical and Bayesian Linear Data Estimators for Unique Word OFDM
Unique word - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) is a novel
OFDM signaling concept, where the guard interval is built of a deterministic
sequence - the so-called unique word - instead of the conventional random
cyclic prefix. In contrast to previous attempts with deterministic sequences in
the guard interval the addressed UW-OFDM signaling approach introduces
correlations between the subcarrier symbols, which can be exploited by the
receiver in order to improve the bit error ratio performance. In this paper we
develop several linear data estimators specifically designed for UW-OFDM, some
based on classical and some based on Bayesian estimation theory. Furthermore,
we derive complexity optimized versions of these estimators, and we study their
individual complex multiplication count in detail. Finally, we evaluate the
estimators' performance for the additive white Gaussian noise channel as well
as for selected indoor multipath channel scenarios.Comment: Preprint, 13 page
Precoded FIR and Redundant V-BLAST Systems for Frequency-Selective MIMO Channels
The vertical Bell labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) system is a multi-input multioutput (MIMO) system designed to achieve good multiplexing gain. In recent literature, a precoder, which exploits channel information, has been added in the V-BLAST transmitter. This precoder forces each symbol stream to have an identical mean square error (MSE). It can be viewed as an alternative to the bit-loading method. In this paper, this precoded V-BLAST system is extended to the case of frequency-selective MIMO channels. Both the FIR and redundant types of transceivers, which use cyclic-prefixing and zero-padding, are considered. A fast algorithm for computing a cyclic-prefixing-based precoded V-BLAST transceiver is developed. Experiments show that the proposed methods with redundancy have better performance than the SVD-based system with optimal powerloading and bit loading for frequency-selective MIMO channels. The gain comes from the fact that the MSE-equalizing precoder has better bit-error rate performance than the optimal bitloading method
5G Positioning and Mapping with Diffuse Multipath
5G mmWave communication is useful for positioning due to the geometric
connection between the propagation channel and the propagation environment.
Channel estimation methods can exploit the resulting sparsity to estimate
parameters(delay and angles) of each propagation path, which in turn can be
exploited for positioning and mapping. When paths exhibit significant spread in
either angle or delay, these methods breakdown or lead to significant biases.
We present a novel tensor-based method for channel estimation that allows
estimation of mmWave channel parameters in a non-parametric form. The method is
able to accurately estimate the channel, even in the absence of a specular
component. This in turn enables positioning and mapping using only diffuse
multipath. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the
proposed approach
Parallel-Interference-Cancellation-Assisted Decision-Directed Channel Estimation for OFDM Systems using Multiple Transmit Antennas
The number of transmit antennas that can be employed in the context of least-squares (LS) channel estimation contrived for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems employing multiple transmit antennas is limited by the ratio of the number of subcarriers and the number of significant channel impulse response (CIR)-related taps. In order to allow for more complex scenarios in terms of the number of transmit antennas and users supported, CIR-related tap prediction-filtering-based parallel interference cancellation (PIC)-assisted decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) is investigated. New explicit expressions are derived for the estimator’s mean-square error (MSE), and a new iterative procedure is devised for the offline optimization of the CIR-related tap predictor coefficients. These new expressions are capable of accounting for the estimator’s novel recursive structure. In the context of our performance results, it is demonstrated, for example, that the estimator is capable of supporting L = 16 transmit antennas, when assuming K = 512 subcarriers and K0 = 64 significant CIR taps, while LS-optimized DDCE would be limited to employing L = 8 transmit antennas.
