    OCL and graph transformations – a symbiotic alliance to alleviate the frame problem

    Abstract. Many popular methodologies are influenced by Design by Contract. They recommend to specify the intended behavior of operations in an early phase of the software development life cycle. In practice, software developers use most often natural language to describe how the state of the system is supposed to change when the operation is executed. Formal contract specification languages are still rarely used because their semantics often mismatch the needs of software developers. Restrictive specification languages usually suffer from the ”frame problem”: It is hard to express which parts of the system state should remain unaffected when the specified operation is executed. Constructive specification languages, instead, suffer from the tendency to make specifications deterministic. This paper investigates how a combination of OCL and graph transformations can overcome the frame problem and can make constructive specifications less deterministic. Our new contract specification language is considerably more expressive than both pure OCL and pure graph transformations

    A component framework for personalized multimedia applications

    Eine praktikable Unterstützung für eine dynamische Erstellung von personalisierten Multimedia-Präsentationen bieten bisher weder industrielle Lösungen noch Forschungsansätze. Mit dem Software-technischen Ansatz des MM4U-Frameworks („MultiMedia For You“) wird erstmals eine generische und zugleich praktikable Unterstützung für den dynamischen Erstellungsprozess bereitgestellt. Das Ziel des MM4U-Frameworks ist es den Anwendungsentwicklern eine umfangreiche und anwendungsunabhängige Unterstützung zur Erstellung von personalisierten Multimedia-Inhalten anzubieten und damit den Entwicklungsprozess solcher Anwendungen erheblich zu erleichtern. Um das Ziel eines Software-Frameworks zur generischen Unterstützung der Entwicklung von personalisierten Multimedia-Anwendungen zu erreichen, stellt sich die Frage nach einer geeigneten Software-technischen Unterstützung zur Entwicklung eines solchen Frameworks. Seit der Einführung von objektorientierten Frameworks, ist heute die Entwicklung immer noch aufwendig und schwierig. Um die Entwicklungsrisiken zu reduzieren, sind geeignete Vorgehensmodelle und Entwicklungsmethoden erstellt worden. Mit der Komponenten-Technologie sind auch so genannte Komponenten-Frameworks entstanden. Im Gegensatz zu objekt-orientierten Frameworks fehlt derzeit jedoch ein geeignetes Vorgehensmodell für Komponenten-Frameworks. Um den Entwicklungsprozess von Komponenten-Frameworks zu verbessern ist mit ProMoCF („Process Model for Component Frameworks“) ein neuartiger Ansatz entwickelt worden. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein leichtgewichtiges Vorgehensmodell und eine Entwicklungsmethodik für Komponenten-Frameworks. Das Vorgehensmodell wurde unter gegenseitigem Nutzen mit der Entwicklung des MM4U-Frameworks erstellt. Das MM4U-Framework stellt keine Neuerfindung der Adaption von Multimedia-Inhalten dar, sondern zielt auf die Vereinigung und Einbettung existierender Forschungsansätze und Lösungen im Umfeld der Multimedia-Personalisierung. Mit so einem Framework an der Hand können Anwendungsentwickler erstmals effizient und einfach eine dynamische Erstellung ihrer personalisierten Multimedia-Inhalte realisieren

    Sustainable development of urban informal settlements in Pakistan : case of economic activities within the informal settlements

    The housing scene in Pakistan during past few decades has become dominated by informal settlements. A lack of low income housing gave birth to the illegal settlements all over Pakistan comprising mostly low income households. Karachi in the past has faced high migration rates due political and economic turmoils both national and international. Apart from housing, informal settlements have small manufacturing units, retail and service industries. Over the years residents of informal settlements have started to upgrade and improve their surrounding environment with approval from government in most cases. The residents are expected to fund their own development schemes, hence the existence of economic enterprises within informal settlements and their contribution towards a lasting sustainable environment is the context of this research. The aim, therefore, is to 'investigate relationships between economic activities within informal settlements in urban areas of Pakistan and their links with the sustainable development process'. An extensive literature review was carried out and three conceptual case studies discussed with emphasis on current development planning. From the literature review it was found that legal backing is a key component for sustainable development processes. Main case studies from two cities: Karachi and Faisalabad were conducted. The data from the two sets was analysed and a visible link between economic enterprises and development initiatives was found. A detailed analysis of various stakeholders was also carried out to understand the capacity and capability of each one in terms of sustainable development initiatives. This research concludes that economic activities taking place within informal settlements are vital for the environmental development and ultimately sustainable development of the informal settlements. Recommendations following this outcome have been proposed for future sustainable plans. The use of this research can be extended towards developing and formulating new housing policies for other urban areas of Pakistan and for areas that have been destroyed by natural calamities.
