The Effect of Planarization on Width
We study the effects of planarization (the construction of a planar diagram
from a non-planar graph by replacing each crossing by a new vertex) on
graph width parameters. We show that for treewidth, pathwidth, branchwidth,
clique-width, and tree-depth there exists a family of -vertex graphs with
bounded parameter value, all of whose planarizations have parameter value
. However, for bandwidth, cutwidth, and carving width, every graph
with bounded parameter value has a planarization of linear size whose parameter
value remains bounded. The same is true for the treewidth, pathwidth, and

On Visibility Representations of Non-planar Graphs
A rectangle visibility representation (RVR) of a graph consists of an
assignment of axis-aligned rectangles to vertices such that for every edge
there exists a horizontal or vertical line of sight between the rectangles
assigned to its endpoints. Testing whether a graph has an RVR is known to be
NP-hard. In this paper, we study the problem of finding an RVR under the
assumption that an embedding in the plane of the input graph is fixed and we
are looking for an RVR that reflects this embedding. We show that in this case
the problem can be solved in polynomial time for general embedded graphs and in
linear time for 1-plane graphs (i.e., embedded graphs having at most one
crossing per edge). The linear time algorithm uses a precise list of forbidden
configurations, which extends the set known for straight-line drawings of
1-plane graphs. These forbidden configurations can be tested for in linear
time, and so in linear time we can test whether a 1-plane graph has an RVR and
either compute such a representation or report a negative witness. Finally, we
discuss some extensions of our study to the case when the embedding is not
fixed but the RVR can have at most one crossing per edge
Crossing Patterns in Nonplanar Road Networks
We define the crossing graph of a given embedded graph (such as a road
network) to be a graph with a vertex for each edge of the embedding, with two
crossing graph vertices adjacent when the corresponding two edges of the
embedding cross each other. In this paper, we study the sparsity properties of
crossing graphs of real-world road networks. We show that, in large road
networks (the Urban Road Network Dataset), the crossing graphs have connected
components that are primarily trees, and that the remaining non-tree components
are typically sparse (technically, that they have bounded degeneracy). We prove
theoretically that when an embedded graph has a sparse crossing graph, it has
other desirable properties that lead to fast algorithms for shortest paths and
other algorithms important in geographic information systems. Notably, these
graphs have polynomial expansion, meaning that they and all their subgraphs

Dynamic Programming for Graphs on Surfaces
We provide a framework for the design and analysis of dynamic programming
algorithms for surface-embedded graphs on n vertices and branchwidth at most k.
Our technique applies to general families of problems where standard dynamic
programming runs in 2^{O(k log k)} n steps. Our approach combines tools from
topological graph theory and analytic combinatorics. In particular, we
introduce a new type of branch decomposition called "surface cut
decomposition", generalizing sphere cut decompositions of planar graphs
introduced by Seymour and Thomas, which has nice combinatorial properties.
Namely, the number of partial solutions that can be arranged on a surface cut
decomposition can be upper-bounded by the number of non-crossing partitions on
surfaces with boundary. It follows that partial solutions can be represented by
a single-exponential (in the branchwidth k) number of configurations. This
proves that, when applied on surface cut decompositions, dynamic programming
runs in 2^{O(k)} n steps. That way, we considerably extend the class of
problems that can be solved in running times with a single-exponential
dependence on branchwidth and unify/improve most previous results in this

Structural Rounding: Approximation Algorithms for Graphs Near an Algorithmically Tractable Class
We develop a framework for generalizing approximation algorithms from the structural graph algorithm literature so that they apply to graphs somewhat close to that class (a scenario we expect is common when working with real-world networks) while still guaranteeing approximation ratios. The idea is to edit a given graph via vertex- or edge-deletions to put the graph into an algorithmically tractable class, apply known approximation algorithms for that class, and then lift the solution to apply to the original graph. We give a general characterization of when an optimization problem is amenable to this approach, and show that it includes many well-studied graph problems, such as Independent Set, Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, Minimum Maximal Matching, Chromatic Number, (l-)Dominating Set, Edge (l-)Dominating Set, and Connected Dominating Set.
To enable this framework, we develop new editing algorithms that find the approximately-fewest edits required to bring a given graph into one of a few important graph classes (in some cases these are bicriteria algorithms which simultaneously approximate both the number of editing operations and the target parameter of the family). For bounded degeneracy, we obtain an O(r log{n})-approximation and a bicriteria (4,4)-approximation which also extends to a smoother bicriteria trade-off. For bounded treewidth, we obtain a bicriteria (O(log^{1.5} n), O(sqrt{log w}))-approximation, and for bounded pathwidth, we obtain a bicriteria (O(log^{1.5} n), O(sqrt{log w} * log n))-approximation. For treedepth 2 (related to bounded expansion), we obtain a 4-approximation. We also prove complementary hardness-of-approximation results assuming P != NP: in particular, these problems are all log-factor inapproximable, except the last which is not approximable below some constant factor 2 (assuming UGC)
EFFICIENT GREEDY-FACE-GREEDY GEOGRAPHIC ROUTING PROTOCOLS IN MOBILE AD HOC AND SENSOR NETWORKS
This thesis describes and develops two planarization algorithms for geographic routing and a geographic routing protocol for mobile ad hoc and sensor networks. As all nodes are mobile and there is no fixed infrastructure, the design of routing protocols is one of the most challenging issues in mobile ad hoc and sensor networks. In recent years, greedyface- greedy (GFG) geographic routing protocols have been widely used, which need nodes to construct planar graphs as the underlying graphs for face routing.
Two kinds of planarization algorithms have been developed, idealized and realistic planarization algorithms, respectively. The idealized planarization algorithms make the ideal assumption that the original network graph is a unit-disk graph (UDG). On the other hand, the realistic planarization algorithms do not need the original network to be a UDG.
We propose an idealized planarization algorithm, which constructs an Edge Constrained Localized Delaunay graph (ECLDel). Compared to the existing planarized localized Delaunay graph [42], the construction of an ECLDel graph is far simpler, which reduces the communication cost and saves the network bandwidth.
We propose a Pre-Processed Cross Link Detection Protocol (PPCLDP), which generates a planar spanning subgraph of the original network graph in realistic environments with obstacles. The proposed PPCLDP outperforms the existing Cross Link Detection Protocol [32] with much lower communication cost and better convergence time.
In GFG routing protocols, greedy routing may fail at concave nodes, in which case, face routing is applied to recover from the greedy routing failure. This may cause extra hops in routing in networks containing voids. We propose a Hill-Area-Restricted (HAR) routing protocol, which avoids the extra hops taken in the original GFG routing. Compared to the existing Node Elevation Ad hoc Routing [4], the proposed HAR guarantees the packet delivery and decreases the communication cost greatly
