    Study of a Flexible UAV Proprotor

    This paper is concerned with the evaluation of design techniques, both for the propulsive performance and for the structural behavior of a composite flexible proprotor. A numerical model was developed using a combination of aerodynamic model based on Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT), and structural model based on anisotropic beam finite element, in order to evaluate the coupled structural and the aerodynamic characteristics of the deformable proprotor blade. The numerical model was then validated by means of static performance measurements and shape reconstruction from Laser Distance Sensor (LDS) outputs. From the validation results of both aerodynamic and structural model, it can be concluded that the numerical approach developed by the authors is valid as a reliable tool for designing and analyzing the UAV-sized proprotor made of composite material. The proposed experiment technique is also capable of providing a predictive and reliable data in blade geometry and performance for rotor modes

    Numerical Investigation of Second Mode Attenuation over Carbon/Carbon Surfaces on a Sharp Slender Cone

    We have carried out axisymmetric numerical simulations of a spatially developing hypersonic boundary layer over a sharp 7^{\circ{}}-half-angle cone at M=7.5M_\infty=7.5 inspired by the experimental investigations by Wagner (2015). Simulations are first performed with impermeable (or solid) walls with a one-time broadband pulse excitation applied upstream to determine the most convectively-amplified frequencies resulting in the range 260kHz -- 400kHz, consistent with experimental observations of second-mode instability waves. Subsequently, we introduce harmonic disturbances via continuous periodic suction and blowing at 270kHz and 350kHz. For each of these forcing frequencies complex impedance boundary conditions (IBC), modeling the acoustic response of two different carbon/carbon (C/C) ultrasonically absorptive porous surfaces, are applied at the wall. The IBCs are derived as an output of a pore-scale aeroacoustic analysis -- the inverse Helmholtz Solver (iHS) -- which is able to return the broadband real and imaginary components of the surface-averaged impedance. The introduction of the IBCs in all cases leads to a significant attenuation of the harmonically-forced second-mode wave. In particular, we observe a higher attenuation rate of the introduced waves with frequency of 350kHz in comparison with 270kHz, and, along with the iHS impedance results, we establish that the C/C surfaces absorb acoustic energy more effectively at higher frequencies.Comment: AIAA-SciTech 201

    Using natural means to reduce surface transport noise during propagation outdoors

    This paper reviews ways of reducing surface transport noise by natural means. The noise abatement solutions of interest can be easily (visually) incorporated in the landscape or help with greening the (sub)urban environment. They include vegetated surfaces (applied to faces or tops of noise walls and on building façades and roofs ), caged piles of stones (gabions), vegetation belts (tree belts, shrub zones and hedges), earth berms and various ways of exploiting ground-surface-related effects. The ideas presented in this overview have been tested in the laboratory and/or numerically evaluated in order to assess or enhance the noise abatement they could provide. Some in-situ experiments are discussed as well. When well-designed, such natural devices have the potential to abate surface transport noise, possibly by complementing and sometimes improving common (non-green) noise reducing devices or measures. Their applicability strongly depends on the available space reserved for the noise abatement and the receiver position

    Piezoelectric based energy harvesting on low frequency vibrations of civil infrastructures

    Piezoelectric-based energy harvesting is an efficient way to convert ambient vibration energy into usable electric energy. The piezoelectric harvester can work as a sustainable and green power source for different electric devices such as sensors and implanted medical devices. However, its application on civil infrastructures has not been fully studied yet. This dissertation aimed to study and improve the piezoelectric-based energy harvesting on civil infrastructures, especially on bridge structures. To reach the objective, a more accurate model for piezoelectric composite beams was built first, which can be adopted for the modeling of different kinds of energy harvesters. The model includes both direct and inverse piezoelectric effects and can provide a better prediction for the dynamic response and energy output of a harvester. Secondly, to examine the piezoelectric-based energy harvesting on civil infrastructures, four concrete slab-on-girder bridges that represent the majority of bridges in the United States were modeled and used as the platforms for the energy harvesting. Piezoelectric cantilever–based harvesters were adopted for the energy harvesting performance simulation considering their wide usage. Different parameters of the bridges and the harvester were studied regarding to the harvesting performance. Two major problems for energy harvesting on civil infrastructures were identified, namely their low frequency vibrations and wide frequency ranges. Then, a multi-impact energy harvester was proposed to improve the harvesting performance under the vibration of low frequencies. The multi-impact was first introduced and theoretically proven. Theoretical and experimental studies for the multi-impact energy harvester were conducted. Both the results show an increased energy output power than the one from the conventional cantilever-based energy harvester. A parametric study was also presented which can serve as a guideline for the design and manufacture for the proposed harvester. Finally, a nonlinear energy harvester was proposed utilizing the magnet levitation. A larger band width was expected due to the stiffness non-linearity of the system. A theoretical model was built for the harvester and its energy output was simulated under the excitation of sinusoidal vibrations and bridge vibrations. The simulation results show a promising way to apply energy harvesting in the field of civil engineering

    An experimental study of the elastic properties of dragonfly-like flapping wings for use in Biomimetic Micro Air Vehicles (BMAV)

    This article studies the elastic properties of several biomimetic micro air vehicle (BMAV) wings that are based on a dragonfly wing. BMAVs are a new class of unmanned micro-sized air vehicles that mimic the flapping wing motion of flying biological organisms (e.g., insects, birds, and bats). Three structurally identical wings were fabricated using different materials: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA), and acrylic. Simplified wing frame structures were fabricated from these materials and then a nanocomposite film was adhered to them which mimics the membrane of an actual dragonfly. These wings were then attached to an electromagnetic actuator and passively flapped at frequencies of 10–250 Hz. A three-dimensional high frame rate imaging system was used to capture the flapping motions of these wings at a resolution of 320 pixels × 240 pixels and 35000 frames per second. The maximum bending angle, maximum wing tip deflection, maximum wing tip twist angle, and wing tip twist speed of each wing were measured and compared to each other and the actual dragonfly wing. The results show that the ABS wing has considerable flexibility in the chordwise direction, whereas the PLA and acrylic wings show better conformity to an actual dragonfly wing in the spanwise direction. Past studies have shown that the aerodynamic performance of a BMAV flapping wing is enhanced if its chordwise flexibility is increased and its spanwise flexibility is reduced. Therefore, the ABS wing (fabricated using a 3D printer) shows the most promising results for future applications
